Is living in the city making your skin age faster?
Living in a big city like Singapore has its great advantages: the hottest clubs are only a Grab ride away, the public transportation system is (mostly) on its toes, and we get to makan at fancy, Instagram-worthy restaurants all the time. So many dream of living in a clean, beautiful city like Singapore, and here we are, living the dream, right?
Not… exactly. But one big, big disadvantage is the immense toll our skin has to take from city life – whether it be from environmental pollutants, daily stress, lack of sleep, or less-than-stellar lifestyle choices (yes, that restaurant oil will make its way back into your skin!). Living a fast-paced life in the city means that oftentimes, our skincare gets neglected, even if you have that 10-step Korean nighttime skincare routine down to a T.
In fact, according to dermatology studies published in the last couple of years, a combination of UV rays, particulate matter, grime, and smog are responsible for approximately 80% of visible facial aging signs, including wrinkles, hyperpigmentation and loss in skin elasticity. Other skin problems that can stem from pollution include clogged pores, greasiness, and dullness. Remember that terrible haze back in 2015? Our bosses who had to deal with so much tardiness in the office weren’t the only ones irritated – our skins were too! And chances are, it will happen again.
So what do we do now? Do we just stay in a hermit in our houses, hoping that nothing will seep into our rooms? That’s unrealistic, and we all know it. Instead, one effective solution to this grave issue is to start using anti-pollution skincare, something that has been increasingly gaining traction in Asia recently.
