Why do we open our mouths when applying eye makeup?

About 2/3 of us systematically have this reflex. Why is it so difficult to put mascara or eyeliner with a closed mouth? Here’s the answer.

Why do we open our mouths when applying eye makeup?

Why do we open our mouths when applying makeup? This is a question that is sure to have plagued you at some point if you’ve ever applied mascara or eyeliner and noticed your expression in the mirror. While it is quite possible to wear makeup with the lips closed, most of us unintentionally open our mouths to properly apply  eyeliner or, more frequently, their mascara. Why is that so?

KEEPING YOUR MOUTH SHUT REQUIRES EFFORT

“Having your mouth shut is not natural. When you are relaxed, or otherwise highly concentrated on a task that requires high accuracy, the neck muscles are relaxed and the mouth opens spontaneously, “says Alexandre Bonnet, an osteopath in Paris.

Other hypotheses have also surfaced. One of them claims that having the mouth open in an ‘O’ shape would temporarily prevent the eyes from blinking. No physiological explanation exists yet to support this assumption.

However, the fact is, opening the mouth stretches the facial skin and therefore facilitates applying makeup, This does not mean that you can not wear makeup like a pro without making a grimace!
