Beauty Review: Kat Von D’s Alchemist Holographic Palette

Marie France Asia’s beauty writer Lim Han tries out Kat Von D’s Alchemist Holographic Palette and shares her results.

Behold: Kat Von D’s Alchemist Holographic Palette

After seven long years of intense brainstorming and meticulous formulation, the wait is over. Kat Von D has finally unleashed to the world her phenomenal, precious brainchild: the Alchemist Holographic Palette. Made with cutting-edge technology and a groundbreaking formula, each prismatic shadow is lavished with a refractive coating that catches the smallest hint of light to reveal a mystical multi-faceted iridescence. Dust it on your eyelids, swipe it on your cheekbones, brush it down your nose – apply it anywhere you desire for that holographic luminance that will instantly brighten your face.

You’ll be bewitched by the beauty of this palette before you even open it. The exterior of the palette boasts of a holographic surface embellished with a beautiful cursive “A” against the backdrop of intricate filigree, all hand-drawn by Kat herself. Encasing four gorgeous shades – Emerald: an iridescent green, Saphyre: a holographic blue, Amethyst: a mesmerising ultra-violet and Opal: a gleaming pink – this palette will astound you with its magnificent versatility.

Our Verdict

I normally stick to deep, earthy tones like brown or maroon when it comes to eyeshadow (instead of glittery white hues). So, I was rather skeptical about using these as shadows.

I dabbed my finger very lightly onto one of the shades and swatched it onto the back of my hand. I was seriously blown away by the pigmentation – the shadow swiped on like butter and the colour came out beautifully.

Alright, eyeshadow time. I first applied a base of Sleek’s pastel pink eyeshadow onto my eyelids. Then, I brushed some “Amethyst” onto the central area of my eyelids as a highlight. Boy, did it feel like magic. The pastel purple hues melded with the holographic gleam to create a magnificent shade that instantly transported me to the land of unicorns and candy floss. I’m not exaggerating when I say this: I felt like a full-fledged fairy. Riding the wave of magic, I proceeded to dust “Opal” onto the inner corners of my lids. Bam! I looked fresher, more awake and even felt that way too.

Now, before anyone can ask about the legitimacy of this product as a strobing palette, I was just getting to that. Although I usually gravitate to warm, champagne shades for highlighting, I decided to be a little adventurous for once and try out cool tones. I mixed “Amethyst” and “Saphyre” together and dusted it onto my cheekbones. My cheeks reflected a purple-blue iridescence, as expected, which turned out to be less odd-looking than I thought it would be. I was totally digging this cool-toned highlight, which would look perfect for daytime looks at outdoor music festivals or daytime parties.

Overall, this is an extremely easy palette to work with and one that adds a playful twist to your mundane makeup routine! If you’re keen on feeling like a mystical fairy or are simply a fan of holography, this is the palette for you.

Kat Von D’s Alchemist Holographic Palette is priced at SGD50 and will be available for a limited time at all Sephora stores or on sephora.sg from 13 April 2017.
