The Korean beauty brand prides itself on mixing traditional medicine with science- and comes at a hefty price tag. But how does it fare? Our editor finds out.

Very rarely does a beauty product make a strong impression and earns the loyalty of beauty-obsessed folks like us, whose job is to always test the latest and best in the vast and ever expanding beauty world.

The temptation to try something new or switch products becomes something of an addiction and a habit that’s hard to kick. And as a result, more often than not, our skin suffers and the confusion on which product resulted in what effect begins.

A year ago, I vowed to stop and as tempted as I am to try the latest, beautifully packaged creams which promise miraculous results – I have settled for one which I can confidently say I won’t be ditching for a while.

My holy grail of skincare is not just one cream, but rather a set of Sulwhasoo products which I now apply religiously, day and night, to achieve a radiant and healthy complexion – that I frankly wouldn’t even trade for Angelina Jolie’s luscious lips!

Known for its unique philosophy of merging natural ingredients and science, Sulwhasoo has established itself as a brand which believes that achieving great skin relies on the balance of yin and yang and once that happens, true Sangseng is achieved in the body which cause the skin to glow from within, reflecting true harmony.

Heritage plays a big role in formulating the winning concoctions, including the seriously time and effort consuming Poje Method, which is a combination of various methods of processing that are used to formulate Korean medicinal herbs. The ingredients are baked, steamed, fermented, or vinegared after which they are detoxified, enriched, or preserved for a longer period of time. So it’s clear that what you’re getting is not something produced in a clinical lab, but a much more complicated – and naturally conceived – product which justifies its price.

Intriguing for sure, but why do I love the products you ask?

For the Timetreasure set (which at the moment I only use nightly), it is the immediate rejuvenation I feel due firstly to the herbal scent which is contrasting to all the chemically-scented varieties out there. After using the full range for a few weeks, I also noticed a great improvement in my skin’s texture – as if it became thicker and more fortified and it definitely felt much more supple.

While applying all 5 products (perfecting water, emulsion, renovating serum, eye cream and cream), in order, can take up to 20 minutes when done as recommended and with the accompanying massage, the result was definitely worth it.

The first three products are fairly light so there was no discomfort applying them in the hot and humid weather. The eye cream has a great texture which absorbs in a couple of minutes and while my wrinkles are still visible (I didn’t expect miracles after all), the dark circles and puffiness have decreased significantly. Not to mention how comfortable the eye cream feels especially as this is the most sensitive skin area.

As for the face cream, it was a little tricky to get around it at the beginning. The thickness and richness of it take a little of getting used to and less is definitely more when it comes to applying this strong herbal-scented jar of goodness.

However, I was surprised at how quickly it sunk into my skin and I felt its effects especially in the mornings, when I woke up feeling like my skin was nourished and rejuvenated. An effect I don’t usually get with most face creams.

After using the Timetreasure renovating cream day and night for a month, I decided it is probably more suited for the night, and switched to Sulwhasoo’s Concentrated Ginseng Renewing Cream which was more lightweight and hence better suited for the day. Teamed with the best selling First Care Activating Serum in the mornings, and topped with sunscreen (since Sulwhasoo products boast all natural ingredients, there is no SPF protection) – my skin has never looked better.

Using this self-prescribed, complicated – and pricey – skincare routine at the moment seems unbeatable: it is effective, comfortable and most importantly natural with no side effects whatsoever. I could finally say goodbye to dull and lifeless complexion – and to turning my face into a lab experiment.

After all, if it works, why change it, no?

Sulwhasoo products are available at Sulwhasoo counters in following outlets and department stores.
