Met Gala 2015: Our best and worst dressed on the night
updated the 6 October 2015 à 23:07See who topped and who flopped at the most glamorous red carpet event – the Met Gala – which celebrated China this year.
The biggest and most glamorous red carpet of the year is here! And we don’t mean that of the Oscars or Cannes – we’re talking about pure fashion that is the Met Gala. The annual benefit – which by the way costs USD25k a ticket – is held every year to raise funds for New York’s Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute as well as to celebrate fashion and creativity in its highest form.
It is also an opportunity for us to see fashion take centre stage on a whole different level as the stars get decked out in artful creations, mostly accompanied by their designers.
The theme for this year’s benefit was ‘China: Through the Looking Glass’ and it comes as no surprise considering that everyone around the world is looking East for inspiration these days..
While there might be do’s and dont’s at other red carpets – at the Met Gala anything goes. It is the only occasion where it is acceptable – as well as expected – to be extravagant and there’s no such thing as OTT.
Speaking of OTT – Never one to shy away from dramatic entrances, Rihanna did what she does best and literally swept the red carpet with her Guo Pei furry coat which looked like it weighed a ton. Kudos to her though for following the night’s theme wearing a Chinese designer who might as well be one of the best couturiers in the world.
As hard as Rihanna might have tried, we think she was no match for the real fashion girl Sarah Jessica Parker who surprised everyone by arriving in a custom-made H&M (yes H&M) gown complete with an intricate Asian-inspired headgear that only she could pull off.
Another surprise on the night was Amal Clooney who wowed in a custom Maison Margiela Couture gown designed by John Galliano which fit her to perfection. The disgraced designer might have won his way back into the fashion world – and we surely are glad about that!
As for the rest of the lucky attendees – scroll through our gallery to find out who wowed – and those who failed to impress – us on fashion’s biggest night.
