Presenting a collection inspired by Japan, Singapore’s darling designer, Priscilla Ong continues to hit the nail right on the head with her latest collection.

While Ong Shunmugam became the darling of Singapore’s fashion scene thanks to her expertly crafted traditional Chinese outfits – namely qipaos and cheongsams – that came with modern twists, this time around, she’ll be revered for deconstructing another Asian style, the Japanese Kimono.

Taking inspiration from the Japanese occupation’s impact on Southeast Asia, and the advent of Japanese fabric back in the day, the Cruise 2016 collection is ultimately an attempt at re-imagining the signature Kimono style. Whether it be through shirt dresses nipped in at the waist with obi belts or with exaggerated flared sleeves and wide lapels.

The collection flowed from dominantly monotone looks decorated with printed belts to outfits that were constructed out of 3 different fabrics, including Indonesian batik, and colour-blocked to create a far more imaginative style that truly embodied Priscilla Ong’s unique eye for meshing textures and prints.

Moving from sombre shades of grey and navy blue to bright, vibrant flashes of green, orange and a tinge of blush hues, the colours prove to be versatile enough for a wide range of occasions. For instance, one could adorn the fluroscent orange dress for parties and the dark navy blue dress for the office – if your workplace allows for creative outfits that is.

At the end of the day, her designs have repeatedly emphasised on her impeccable ability at sourcing for intriguing, traditional fabrics from all over Asia and utilising them in a contemporary fashion, without diminishing the cultural aspect to naught. Now, that is the mark of an intelligent designer.
