No doubt, the Costume Institute Gala – or more commonly referred to as the Met Gala – is fashion’s biggest night. What started out as a fashion fundraiser has now evolved to arguably the most elite style event of the year, where the biggest names and most beautiful faces in fashion, film, music and art come together to raise money for the Met’s Costume Institute.

The Met Gala 2018 marks the event’s 70th anniversary – and this year, the exhibition’s takes on the theme of Heavenly Bodies: Fashion and the Catholic Imagination. Which is perhaps apt, considering how the Met Gala is akin to a religious experience for followers of fashion.

True to its theme, there were nods to papal motifs and gospel influences everywhere on the red carpet. From extravagant headpieces and crowns to crosses and papal hats, it is clear that the Met 2018 is all about the headpiece however.

Rihanna, who is responsible for some of the most iconic Met looks (and who also happens to be this year’s co-host, alongside Amal Clooney and Donatella Versace) was a vision in a papal crown and opulent larger-than-life cape ensemble designed by Margiela. Rapper Cardi B made her gala debut – baby bump and all – in a jewelled headpiece and dress.

It’s a tricky (and potentially controversial) one – navigating the line between sacred religious symbols and fashion. To see how the designers and their celebrity muses interpret religious symbolism onto the red carpet, swipe through our gallery above!
