As the event goes into its fifth year, here are the proud winners from the sustainable fashion design competition.

Sustainable fashion as a concept has garnered significant support from the industry in the last couple of years especially so as The EcoChic Design Award goes into its fifth year. The contest essentially challenges designers to reduce environmental waste in their designs and eventually place sustainability as the core of the fashion industry

For this cycle, 10 finalists from all over the world presented their eco-friendly collections at Hong Kong Fashion Week last week to a jury consisting of Orsola de Castro, Co-Founder of From Somewhere and Curator of Estethica; Dorian Ho, Fashion Designer; Anderson Lee, Vice Chairman of the Sustainable Fashion Business Consortium; Raffaele Borriello, Creative Consigliere, Shanghai Tang; and Yvonne Luk, Chief Editor of WGSN China.

After possibly intense deliberation, clinching the top prize was Kévin Germanier from UK who will now design the first up-cycled collection for China’s leading luxury brand, Shanghai Tang. Following closely behind, Victor Cho from Hong Kong came in 2nd allowing him to design textile waste-reducing uniforms for Hong Kong’s legendary five star hotel, The Langham, Hong Kong’s T’ang Court restaurant.

In addition to the top prize, Singapore’s Laurensia Salim won the Special Prize where she will enjoy an educational trip to John Hardy’s design and production workshop in Bali, Indonesia to learn from their sustainability leadership.

Proving that fashion need not be a wasteful and environmentally uncaring industry, these designers are definitely paving the way forward for sustainable and yet unequivocally stylish designs.
