Fika is no stranger to our local Halal food scene. Serving delicious and authentic Halal Swedish cuisine in Singapore, the cafe has won legions of hungry tummies with its hearty food fare. Its breakfast menu is available daily (till 1PM on weekdays and 3PM on weekends) and include classic staples like Oatmeal "Havregrynsgrot" (SGD8), a Swedish-style wholegrain oatmeal drenched in cold milk and generously topped with fresh berries, and Breakfast Waffle "Frukost vaffla" (SGD12), a breakfast waffle paired with scrambled eggs, turkey bacon and mushroom compote. Its breakfast items are affordably priced, so you can satiate your tummy without burning a hole in your wallet.

Penny University
Penny University needs no introduction. Despite being tucked away in East Coast Road, this cafe is perpetually crowded (particularly on weekends) and continues to rank as one of our favourite spots for great Halal brunch fare. Given its hearty food options and bonus features like free Wi-Fi and ample power points, it's not hard to see why. The menu items are also relatively affordable compared to other cafe brunches. We recommend the Full English Breakfast (SGD16), Eggs Benedict (SGD15) and Turkish Eggs (SGD8.50)!

Good news, folks - iconic, award-winning restaurant Halia (which recently attained its Halal certification in June 2017) will now be offering breakfast! It has unveiled its new breakfast menu, which features a hearty selection of both sweet and savoury dishes like the Smashed Avocado (SGD12), Truffled Scrambled Eggs on Toasted Sourdough (SGD18), and even Asian-inspired bites like the Chilli Crab Eggs (SGD14) and Braised Wagyu "Nasi Lemak" (SGD22). The restaurant, beautifully nestled within the lush foliage at our Singapore Botanic Gardens, starts its breakfast service at 9AM - perfect for that early morning food fix.

Now Halal-certified, Halia has also given their alcoholic beverage menu a complete facelift with a new herbarium concept, launched in partnership with Singapore Botanic Garden's Library of Botany and Horticulture, which makes use of the herbs in the garden to create nutritious, delicious concoctions. The ex-bartenders, now called 'herbalists', have artfully whipped up 7 herbarium drinks that include The Banana & Almond (SGD7), The Goji Berry Infusion (SGD8) and more. Available throughout the day, Halia will also be releasing more beverage options in the future, so keep your eyes peeled for that!

You've probably seen the Rainbow Burger peppered all across your social feeds by now. And yes, it's by none other than Word Cafe - a quirky Halal cafe located along Upper Thomson Road. The cafe's interior industrial-chic aesthetic is elevated with pop art pieces effortlessly framed across its walls that give the place plenty of character.

Now, a burger might not be everyone's idea of brunch - but trust us when we say the vibrantly-hued Handsome Burger (SGD20) is one you'll skip sleeping in on the weekends for. The absolutely pretty rainbow bagel sandwich is stuffed with a juicy minced-meat patty well-marinated with herbs, black pepper and other tasty seasoning, topped with cheese, turkey bacon and spicy peanut butter sauce. Mmm, delish. It may be brightly coloured and look deceptively dessert-like, but make no mistake - this is no subpar burger. We also recommend the Cowch Potato (SGD24) and Panda Creme Brulee (SGD12) while you're there!

Working Title
Working Title is a Halal cafe along Arab Street, that is connected to a hostel on the upper floor. We like how the cafe's interiors are on the hipster side - without looking like it's trying to. The cafe serves its brunch till 5PM (whoopee!), with delicious options that include a Smoked Salmon Ciabatta (SGD14), Working Big Breakfast (22), and an interesting Eggs Burgerdict (SGD18) - a hearty gastronomic combination of poached eggs, grilled beef patty, mild cheddar, tomatoes, mixed greens, brioche and avocado hollandaise accompanied with a side of tater tots. You can also order a plate of their intriguing-sounding Ribena Wings (SGD12), which essentially are seven spiced and battered chicken drumlets drizzled with a reduced Ribena sauce... You be the judge!

The Bravery
The Bravery Cafe, located along Horne Road, is brought to you by the same folks behind The Plain cafe. This all-day brunch spot dishes up Instagram-worthy toasts and other scrumptious breakfast and brunch goodies and - the best part - even delivers to areas like Kallang, Lavendar and Jalan Besar!

For something sweet, we absolutely love their Pancakes Stack, a whooping three-layer of pancakes generously served with bananas, ricotta cheese, crushed pistachio and drizzled with maple syrup. But if you're in the mood for something savoury, you can't go wrong with the Guac and Eggs, classic combination of creamy scrambled eggs, guacamole, tomatoes and pumpkin seeds topped on a toasted multi-grain bread.

The Malayan Council
We first heard about The Malayan Council's highly-raved Ondeh Ondeh cakes and its slew of fusion gourmet food. The dual-storey cafe, which features both an indoor and alfresco dining area, has been opened since August 2015 and specialises in modern cafe and gourmet fare with a traditional Malay influence. If you're on the fence about Asian-fusion dishes in general, you may be surprised at how much you'll like the offerings at The Malayan Council. Its brunch menu is rather limited, though nonetheless worth a try. The brunch menu features dishes like the Apam Balik (SGD15), a popular traditional Indonesian-style pancake served with vanilla ice cream and fresh blueberries, and Eggs Benedict (SGD16). It dessert creations also stay true to its Asian-fusion niche, such as the likes of a Cempedak Creme Brulee (SGD9.50) and TMC Stickydate Pudding (SGD9.50).

Your dietary restrictions should never stand in the way of great food, in our humble opinion. Which is why we’re absolutely stoked about the recent surge in scrumptious Halal cafes and restaurants cropping up across Singapore.

For a long time, Halal eateries in the city were typically confined to Middle Eastern kebab spots or neighbourhood coffee shops dishing up traditional Malay dishes and Indian Muslim food. This meant that all the hype over glorious brunches and breakfasts was something our fellow Muslims in Singapore couldn’t be privy to – although thankfully, not anymore.
