These places offer excellent alternatives for afternoon tea. You might even enjoy them more than the usual English high tea option.

The idea of afternoon tea usually consists of bite-sized tuna sandwiches, scones with clotted cream and a pot of English Breakfast Tea – your usual English high tea menu. This is because the origins of high tea stemmed from British traditions in the 18th century, featuring cakes and pastries to feed the working man. However, cafes and restaurants have recently been introducing twists to this tradition, perhaps to suit a range of palates. Not everybody wants muffins for tea all the time.

We’ve attempted to include the best recommendations for a unique high tea experience, for those afternoons when your taste buds are feeling especially adventurous. Featuring food options like a seafood spread, a Peranakan menu or some local bites, don’t be surprised if these places charm your way out of choosing the typical English afternoon tea option in the future!
