South East Asia’s first independent indoor cycling studio opens its doors in Singapore. We try it and give our verdict.

If you’re looking for a way to rev up your cardio workout and beat the heat while still working up a decent sweat, then indoor cycling might just be the thing for you. Mind you, this is not just any indoor cycling experience but a refreshing and dynamic approach to an intense cardio workout.

Feel the burn as you cycle along to the rhythm of lively music and entertaining visuals from the club-like LED lights in the signature studio, as you are constantly motivated by the trainers’ and the rest of the group’s positive energy, or be pushed to your limit in the bootcamp class. These are just a few of the benefits you’ll receive at 7Cycle.

What is it:

Prominently located in the heart of the Central Business District (CBD) of Singapore, 7Cycle is the first and only independent indoor cycling studio in Singapore and around the region. The studio, that promotes indoor cycling ‘reinvented’ through fun and positive energy, boasts 4000 square feet of well-utilised space with an amphitheatre-style studio on the ground floor, a cute and cosy juice bar and clean, neon-orange coloured changing rooms on the second floor and a bootcamp space on the third floor.

The classes:

The Signature 7Cycle classes are conducted in the ground floor studio which resembles the interior of a futuristic space shuttle (either that or we’ve been on too many space rides in amusement parks), with 36 bikes and constantly changing LED lights and a high-fidelity sound system to create a lively energy in the room. The workout in this studio is 45 minutes long and involves different challenges and build-ups during the intensive session, to the rhythm of catchy songs. The workout also utilizes hand weights for a dynamic workout experience.

The tailormade Bootcamp workouts last 35 minutes per session and the studio, that has 10 functional bikes as well as various bootcamp equipment like battle-ropes, resistance bands and step-up boards, is the perfect place for one to get in a high-intensity workout and maximize calorie burn in the shortest amount of time. Taught by a highly qualified team of trainers, the workouts are done for about three minutes on the bikes and three minutes off and there is no break throughout the session. Participants also get a Heart Rate Monitor (HRM) to wear and track their calorie burn and heart rate. Most students see up to a 400 calorie burn after just one session.

Post-workout, one can chill and grab a fresh cold-pressed juice at the juice bar run by local juice company hic’ Juice.

Our Verdict:

I had a great impression of the studio from the start – the white and neon orange peranakan-style décor was just very welcoming, not to mention the warmth of the staff members, who were all exceedingly pleasant. I was a little nervous about trying out an indoor cycling class because I had only ever tried spinning once and wasn’t too keen on it ever again, after that. I was shown around the studio and loved every bit of it – from the neon orange stairs to the adorable juice room and bootcamp space in what looked very much like an attic. I am a fan of boutique concept studios and I liked that despite being located in such a commercial area, the studio had an exclusive feel to it.

The staff did a great job of pampering me pre-workout and I met a few of the instructors, who were very friendly and encouraging, and who gave me an idea of what to expect in my workout. I opted for the 7Cycle Signature class as I’d done a bootcamp session earlier in the day and wanted to try something completely different.

Equipped with my special cleated shoes, designed specially for the Signature class, I entered the dimly-lit studio and loved what I saw. It was unlike any cycling studio I’d seen and had a very futuristic semi-nightclub-like feel to it. I realized that the décor was very fitting for what the workout is all about because it is essentially meant to be an intense cardio party. After adjusting our bikes, our instructor Debbie Soon, got us started with the workout. She encouraged us to build up our resistance and explained what RPM was all about – that it was about how hard we were working and not how fast we were cycling.

Throughout the workout, I was constantly motivated by her positive energy and her ability to arouse this desire to outperform myself, even when I felt like my legs were giving in. This was complemented by the upbeat music and constantly-changing LED lights. It really was like being at a party. By the end of it – well more like by halfway through it – I was drenched in sweat but felt so very energized.

I really enjoyed the entire experience at 7Cycle. I loved the dynamic full body workout it gave me and the vivacious energy the studio and trainers exuded. I’ll definitely be going back – and recommending it for those who want to stay fit!

7Cycle is located at 27 Boon Tat Street, Singapore 069623For pricing and other information, check out the studio’s website.
