Looking to spruce up your home decor? Take your design cues from former Vogue Living Editor and King Living ambassador, Neale Whitaker.

If you’re guilty of dabbling into that occasional home style overhaul, then you’re probably up-to-date with the latest ins- and outs- of the design world. Just this year, shabby chic made way for the rise of ‘wabi-sabi’: the Japanese design philosophy that embraces imperfection as its modus operandi.

When it comes to home decor, there is perhaps no better voice of authority as Australian TV host and interior design expert Neale Whitaker. As the former Vogue Living Editor and ambassador of King Living, Whitaker shares his top tips for breathing a fresh lease of life into your home decor and how you can keep it looking stylish and on trend through changing up your styling and accessorising.

“There are of lots of changes in trends as the year goes on, but if you only remember one thing, make it this: minimalisim is OUT,” declares Whitaker. Read on to discover the top home decor trends of 2018.

1. Rise of ‘Wabi-sabi’

Interior design is still very much obsessed with injecting warmth, conviviality and “soul” into spaces. However, this season is witness to the growing influence of the Japanese philosophy of ‘wabi-sabi’ which translates to the opposite of immaculate perfection. Think: all things old and weathered, raw and imperfect. You can achieve that coveted and effortless ‘wabi-sabi’ touch with ceramics, metalware, and timber furnishings.

2. Scented candles are officially back

But were scented candles technically ever not in vogue? To keep your home looking and smelling delightfully trend, opt for scents with top notes of musk, sandalwood or patchouli.

3. All about the purples

Pantone’s 2018 Colour of the Year is ‘Ultra Violet’ – a deep and powerful purple and the latest trend in the colour palette is all about dramatic shades like plum, burgundy, russet, mustard and emerald green. These regal, jewel tones are great accent colours against creams, neutrals, and pale greys.

4. Bigger is Better

According to Whitaker, when it comes to your home accessories, the bigger it is, the better: “My mantra is always ‘if in doubt, oversize’, and it seems this season I’m totally on trend. Think: oversized cushions, large centerpieces, or generously portioned throws and blankets.

5. Tone and Texture

Injecting tones and textures into your home makes a strong style statement. The 80s continue to be a major decor inspiration, so expect lots of monochromatic black and white accents, graffiti-style prints, classic motifs, dog and houndstooth, chevrons, velvet, chrome, leather and brass.
