{"id":339603,"date":"2015-05-27T13:55:49","date_gmt":"2015-05-27T05:55:49","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.mariefranceasia.com\/uncategorized-hk\/asthma-treatment-cure-in-5-years-339603.html"},"modified":"2015-05-27T13:55:49","modified_gmt":"2015-05-27T05:55:49","slug":"asthma-treatment-cure-in-5-years","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.mariefranceasia.com\/hk\/health-hk\/medical-news-hk\/asthma-treatment-cure-in-5-years-339603.html","title":{"rendered":"Asthma: Calcium treatment set to release in 5 years?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.mariefranceasia.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/7\/2015\/05\/shutterstock_214081504-e1431639013158.jpg\"><span style=\"display: block;\" class=\"wrap-img\" id=\"wrap-img-94199\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" itemprop=\"thumbnailUrl\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-94199 img-responsive \" src=\"http:\/\/www.mariefranceasia.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/7\/2015\/05\/shutterstock_214081504-e1431639013158-625x342.jpg\" alt=\"C'est aujourd'hui la journ\u00e9e mondiale de l'asthme\" width=\"625\" height=\"342\" \/><\/span><\/a><\/p> <p>According to the World Health Organization (WHO), as many as 235 million people suffer from <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mariefranceasia.com\/lifelove\/decoding\/stress-cause-breathing-difficulties-80512.html#post-80512\">asthma<\/a>.\u00a0Yet, the only remedies to\u00a0alleviate the symptoms, such as corticosteroids\u00a0and other bronchodilators, aren't promising enough seeing there are still\u00a0deaths tied to the illness.\u00a0In light of the Asthma Awareness Month, we look at\u00a0a very promising study that was recently published\u00a0in the journal\u00a0<em><a href=\"http:\/\/stm.sciencemag.org\/content\/7\/284\/284ra60\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Science Translational Medicine<\/a>.<\/em><\/p> <h2> <span>Will asthma be cured in 5 years?<\/span> <\/h2> <p>That's what the study's researchers from <strong>Cardiff University<\/strong> and <strong>King's College <\/strong>in London are hoping for. They studied mice and compared them with two different human tissues, one from an asthma patient and another one from a healthy individual. The study shows the level of bronchial irritation is\u00a0correlated to the activity of some calcium receptors (CaSR). With this finding, scientists have concluded that disabling these receptors could prevent inflammation and asthma\u00a0symptoms. The good news doesn't end there.\u00a0Molecules with\u00a0such effects already exist, and they are used to treat osteoporosis (a disease for which the study results have been disappointing, however).<\/p> <p>Tests are underway to determine if these substances, called <strong>calcilytics<\/strong> could end\u00a0asthma\u00a0once and for all.<\/p>  <p><em>Maureen Diament<\/em><\/p>
