When you hear the word \u2018superyachts\u2019, we bet the first two things that would cross your minds would be the glitz and glamour<\/a> that come along with it. While this may be true for the Mangusta, an iconic Italian yacht brand that\u2019s renowned for its quality craftsmanship, bespoke interiors and unparalleled performance; there\u2019s more to look forward to than just the luxurious aspects when you sail one.<\/p>

For those who are new to the yachting world, you\u2019ll find that a lot of passion for the craft is needed, coupled with a\u00a0thirst for travel<\/a> and exploration. Just ask Henry Goulding<\/strong>, Captain and Brand Representative for Mangusta in Singapore. At only 25, he has achieved considerable experience going on countless nautical expeditions around the world. And now with the launch of the latest range of the Mangusta - the Mangusta 132 - he aims to strengthen the brand in the region. Amidst his busy schedule, we recently had an opportunity to speak to him on his passion for yachting, and even got him to reveal some breathtaking undiscovered islands<\/a> you have to check out, that\u2019s only\u00a0a stone\u2019s throw from here.<\/p>

Who introduced you to yachting and inspired you to pursue it?<\/span> <\/h2>

Growing up by the coastline of Cornwall, England, I was introduced to the sea at an early age. My mother has a home on the South coast and we had sailing boats there. Each time we went, my brother and I would take off and explore the creeks of the Helford River in a Wayfarer dingy. Since then, it has become my passion; I can\u2019t imagine doing anything else!<\/p>

You\u2019ve started your professional journey at 18. How does it feel to have travelled over half of the world\u2019s continents?<\/span> <\/h2>

It is very gratifying and quite liberating indeed. I love the planning that goes into a long passage and it\u2019s great to go between countries and continents under your own steam and navigation. Sailing is a wonderful leveler and enormously rewarding. Along the way, I\u2019ve met some amazing people who have taught me valuable lessons on both life and yachting. If not for the experience, I wouldn\u2019t be here (in Singapore).<\/p>

Having\u00a0mingled with yacht owners on your expeditions, were there any particular ones that left an impression on you?<\/span> <\/h2>

The last yacht I delivered was brand new, and the owner and I immediately clicked. He was not at all demanding considering how much there was to learn about a new boat and her systems. Also, the organization and admin that comes with it may be daunting for new owners, but he was very relaxed. Plus, he happened to be from Cornwall, England where I grew up.<\/p>

If you could choose one destination\u00a0to anchor your yacht and live there, which part of the world would it be?<\/span> <\/h2>

I think it would definitely have to be the Helford River in Cornwall, England, because no matter how much time I spend away from home, Cornwall never seems to change. It\u2019s special to go back as I hold some great memories there. What could be better than sitting at an old English pub down by the water on a beautiful summer\u2019s day with great friends and family?<\/p>

Where do you think are the best islands in Southeast Asia to check out - any hidden ones\u00a0you\u2019ve discovered that we should know of?<\/span> <\/h2>

There\u2019re many beautiful and untouched beaches that are still very much thriving in their natural element. Clear waters, powder soft sands, teeming coral and marine life \u2013 perfect for adventurers who are looking at discovering untouched territories.<\/p>

In addition, most are quite accessible and easy to get to. The Indonesian archipelago offers a lot of breathtaking islands for a private getaway. Some of these include: Perhentian, Pankil, Tioman, Anambas and Pulau Joyo. The more well-known ones are Phuket, Koh Samui, Langkawi, Bali and Lombok.<\/p>

Some of my sample trips from Singapore include an expedition to Pangkil Island (Pulau Pangkil). It\u2019s an Indonesian island that\u2019s of close proximity to Singapore. The unspoilt white sandy paradise of 40nm is only an hour\u2019s cruise on a Mangusta 80\u2019. Another would be the Anambas Islands, which is a small archipelago off Indonesia with incredible reefs and crystal clear waters. It\u2019s a hit with divers and snorkellers! Located 150nm due North East of Singapore, this 4- hour cruise when done on a Mangusta 94 can easily be done within a day, or an overnight trip over the weekend.<\/p>

Could you tell us one thing you\u2019ve learnt about each island you\u2019ve travelled to?<\/span> <\/h2>

I\u2019ve travelled to over 30 (I\u2019ve lost count!) but my favourite off the beaten tracks are:<\/p>

  • The Cape Verde Islands \u2013 the simplicity of these islands is amazing. It\u2019s just so raw and untouched. And if you\u2019re wondering, it\u2019s situated off the coast of Africa in the middle of the Atlantic.<\/li> <\/ul>
    • Perhentian Islands \u2013 these islands are a perfect escape from the buzz of Singapore and are accessible via Malaysia. Definitely the perfect spot for diving enthusiasts and people seeking quiet refuge.<\/li> <\/ul>
      • The Croatian Islands - this is the Mediterranean as it was in the 50s. I almost feel like it\u2019s stuck in a time warp! Beautiful deep blue waters, Roman ruins, private coves and islands perfect for exploring and adventure.<\/li> <\/ul>
        • The British Virgin Islands \u2013 I spent a year in the Caribbean. It\u2019s a beautiful collection of islands, and great for chartering a yacht. There\u2019s plenty to do and see, as everyday\u2019s a different experience.<\/li> <\/ul>

          Mangusta\u2019s are known to be top quality yachts. Can you tell us more about the launch of Mangusta 132?<\/span> <\/h2>

          The latest in the Mangusta range with over 4600hp, she is capable of speeds up to 37knots with her twin MTU 4000 engines delivering more power and greater efficiency. A great new feature that proved to be extremely popular among clients (especially women) are her twin gyrostabilizers that keeps her super stable while at anchor, creating a much more comfortable experience for guests. To add on, the yacht has an absolutely stunning interior and is crafted from the finest materials.<\/p>

          Of all the water activities that you\u2019ve pursued, which is your favourite and why?<\/span> <\/h2>

          It has to be diving and free diving; being underwater is out of this world and I can\u2019t get enough. In the past, I\u2019ve done a 100ft free dive with no tank and my goal is to go deeper. Sailing is also thrilling, as it enables me to have full control.<\/p>

          We know that your schedule's really packed. Is there anything you\u00a0would love to do in your leisure time?<\/span> <\/h2>

          Since I am always by water, I have grown to love water-related activities, especially diving\/free diving and sailing, as mentioned above. I enjoy riding motorbikes as you get to see everything. A few years ago I rode a Kawasaki 250 through Thailand\u2019s jungles and lived with the Karen Hill tribes. This experience was amazing and I\u2019m very keen to do more when I have time. Perhaps, a ride through Mongolia and Russia next.<\/p>

          Any\u00a0advice to give to people your age who aspire to do what you do?<\/span> <\/h2>

          Honestly, I find it so hard to quantify what I do. My passion for boats and the sea have led me to where I am today, so my advice would be to do what you love and make a career of it.\u00a0As a whole, I am so honoured to represent Mangusta and the ultimate maxi-sport open yachts. Now that people are starting to embrace the lifestyle, I\u2019m really looking forward to seeing the Asian yacht market grow from strength to strength in the next few years.<\/p>
