{"id":341670,"date":"2015-04-03T10:30:44","date_gmt":"2015-04-03T02:30:44","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.mariefranceasia.com\/uncategorized-hk\/why-women-watch-weepy-movies-341670.html"},"modified":"2015-04-03T10:30:44","modified_gmt":"2015-04-03T02:30:44","slug":"why-women-watch-weepy-movies","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.mariefranceasia.com\/hk\/culture-hk\/entertainment-hk\/why-women-watch-weepy-movies-341670.html","title":{"rendered":"Sobfest: Why do women love watching weepy movies?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.mariefranceasia.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/7\/2015\/04\/tired.jpg\"><span style=\"display: block;\" class=\"wrap-img\" id=\"wrap-img-85648\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" itemprop=\"thumbnailUrl\" class=\" size-medium wp-image-85648 img-responsive  aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/www.mariefranceasia.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/7\/2015\/04\/tired-625x342.jpg\" alt=\"tired\" width=\"625\" height=\"342\" \/><\/span><\/a><a href=\"http:\/\/www.mariefranceasia.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/7\/2014\/02\/tired.jpg\"><br \/> <\/a><\/p> <p>The female love\u00a0for\u00a0happily-ever-afters is irrefutable, yet\u00a0that doesn't change the fact that we reserve a special spot in our hearts for <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mariefranceasia.com\/lifelove\/entertainment-lifelove\/top-tearjerkers-10-melancholic-movies-good-cry-85459.html#post-85459\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">sad, weepy movies<\/a>... but why exactly?<\/p> <p>The mystery is solved after research by\u00a0<strong>Cardiff University<\/strong>\u00a0discovered that sad emotions generated\u00a0by tearjerkers allow women to\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.mariefranceasia.com\/lifelove\/decoding\/plauee-par-amie-vos-temoignages-47451.html#post-47451\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">bond with each other<\/a> and even share 'positive' vibes.<\/p> <p><em>\"Our findings suggest that a negative emotional experience such as watching a 'weepy' film is more positive when it is shared with a friend,\"<\/em> said <strong>Job van der Schalk<\/strong>, a psychologist at the university. <em>\"And, at the same time, a positive emotional experience, such as watching a 'rom-com', should equally be more pleasant when shared.\"<\/em><\/p> <p>The recent study, published in the <em>Social Cognitive and Affective Neuroscience<\/em> journal, involved\u00a030 pairs of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mariefranceasia.com\/lifelove\/entertainment-lifelove\/love-labels-skeleton-video-social-media-crazy-78641.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">girl friends <\/a>between 20 and 33 years old. Each pair was asked to rate some emotionally powerful images on a scale from 'very negative' to 'very positive\", once when they are together and once individually. According to brain scanners, subjects showed more\u00a0positive reactions to the pictures when they were with their friend than without.<\/p> <p>Thanks to this science findings, we no longer have to explain to our male counterparts why a good cry\u00a0over a weepy movie is a favourable experience, at least for us that is.<\/p> <h2> <span><\/span> <\/h2> <h2> <span>Hollywood\u00a0shows\u00a0us the money<\/span> <\/h2> <p>Hollywood backs the research considering sad movies like<em><strong> The Notebook<\/strong><\/em> (2004), <em><strong>Marley &amp; Me<\/strong><\/em> (2008), and <em><strong>The Fault in Our Stars<\/strong><\/em> (2014) were great successes. <em>Marley &amp; Me<\/em>, a Christmas flick,\u00a0exceeded\u00a0a whopping high of USD242 million (SGD331 million) while more recently, <em>The Fault in our Stars<\/em>, grossed at an astounding USD307 million (SGD419 million) worldwide.<\/p> <p>But even though the\u00a0amount of female tears might be directly proportionate to a movie's financial success, we hope you won't give up\u00a0opportunities to bond.
