Thinking that you might have cancer<\/a> is already a heartbreak.\u00a0As if that isn't painful enough,\u00a0patients must go through complex\u00a0biopsies to\u00a0check if they\u00a0really have the\u00a0disease<\/a>.<\/p>

But with this pill that Stanford University\u00a0researchers\u00a0are expecting to launch, this\u00a0painful process\u00a0will be a thing of the past. The research, spearheaded by Professors\u00a0John Ronald <\/strong>and Sanjiv Gambhir<\/strong>, was\u00a0published in the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.\u00a0<\/em><\/p>

So how does it work? According to the study, the drug in question contains pieces of DNA which can trigger\u00a0cancerous cells to secrete a type of\u00a0protein called secreted embryonic alkaline phosphatase into the bloodstream. A simple finger-prick blood test\u00a0is enough to detect these molecules <\/a>and determine\u00a0if a patient has cancer. Essentially, it's as easy as popping a pill and going through a blood test.<\/p>

\"We want to translate this strategy into humans, so we\u2019ve set it up in a way that\u2019s most likely to be effective, safe and convenient,\u201d said Gambhir in a statement.\u00a0\"We haven't got it down to a pill yet, but the oral delivery part of this is likely a solvable problem -- only a few years off, not five or 10 years off.\"
