The research, published in <em><strong>Annals of Internal Medicine,<\/strong>\u00a0<\/em>pools data from 41 other international studies.<\/p> <p><strong>Dr. David Alter<\/strong>, a senior scientist at the <strong>Toronto Rehabilitation Institute <\/strong>and\u00a0author of\u00a0the study, said <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mariefranceasia.com\/health\/healthy-practices\/get-fit-top-10-fitness-apps-63941.html#post-63941\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">exercising for 30-60 minutes<\/a>\u00a0doesn't mean you can remain inactive for the rest of the day. This is simply because exercise won't offset the drawbacks of prolonged sitting.\u00a0Even those\u00a0who exercise vigorously but sit for too long are still\u00a0estimated with a 15-20% higher chance to die of any cause than those who do not sit for long.<\/p> <p>Think about it \u2014 we stay seated at the office eight to nine hours straight, furiously typing away at our keyboards. Before we know it, it's<a href=\"http:\/\/www.mariefranceasia.com\/health\/healthy-practices\/eat-like-diva-beyonce-launches-vegan-meal-plan-72083.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"> lunchtime<\/a>, which requires\u00a0more sitting. By the time work is over, we sit on the bus ride\u00a0home,\u00a0only to be glued on the sofa while watching TV. The vicious cycle of sitting repeats.<\/p> <h2> <span><\/span> <\/h2> <h2> <span>What are the health risks?<\/span> <\/h2> <p>The study reports prolonged seating can result in higher chances of developing breast, colon, colorectal, endometrial and endothelial ovarian <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mariefranceasia.com\/health\/medical-news\/coffee-keep-cancer-doctor-away-67380.html#post-67380\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">cancer<\/a>, type 2 diabetes and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mariefranceasia.com\/health\/medical-news\/carmat-artificial-heart-life-65828.html#post-65828\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">cardiovascular disease<\/a>.<\/p> <p>Insulin\u00a0transports\u00a0glucose to cells for energy, but cells in sedentary muscles don't respond well to the hormone. As the pancreas produces more and more insulin, the risk of diabetes increases. Additionally during a sedentary state, muscles burn less fat and blood flow slows down,\u00a0causing\u00a0fatty acids to clog the heart more easily. All of these can potentially lead to premature death.<\/p>  <h2> <span>What should you do?<\/span> <\/h2> <p>While we are still left to estimate how long is exactly (sitting) too long, Dr. Alter shared some tips to reduce our inactivity.<\/p> <p>Start with monitoring how much you sit every day, and incorporate <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mariefranceasia.com\/health\/healthy-practices\/get-lean-5-diet-plans-follow-2015-64914.html#post-64914\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">physical activity<\/a> into your routine. At work, for example, take\u00a0one to three minutes every 30 minutes to get up and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mariefranceasia.com\/fashion\/serial-shopper\/fabulous-flats-picks-trendy-shoes-spring-2015-71712.html#post-71712\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">walk around<\/a>. At home, when<a href=\"http:\/\/www.mariefranceasia.com\/lifelove\/entertainment-lifelove\/most-anticipated-tv-series-2015-63853.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"> watching TV<\/a>, stand or do small workouts during commercials.\u00a0He also encourages standing for periods of time on a daily basis\u00a0as it\u00a0burns twice as many calories as compared to merely\u00a0sitting. It also promotes\u00a0bone and muscle strength because we have to bear our body weight while standing.<\/p>  <p>If you are still sitting down while reading this last line, you better stand up!
