As the biggest and most celebrated national holiday, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mariefranceasia.com\/beauty\/beauty-buys\/chinese-new-year-best-red-lipstick-skin-tone-66886.html\">Chinese New Year<\/a> is a time where families gather and enjoy festivities which encourage strengthening the bonds between family members and friends.<\/p> <p>So, if it\u2019s the\u00a0first time you're invited to a Chinese friend's home to join the Chinese New Year celebrations, make sure you do your homework first! You might want to brush up a little on this holiday's \u00a0customs and habits before you commit the cardinal sin of ignorance.<\/p> <p>Here are a couple of things to note. You can thank us later!<\/p>  <h2> <span>Wear bright auspicious colours<\/span> <\/h2> <p>Red would the best option for Chinese New Year, but as long as you\u2019re in a<a href=\"http:\/\/www.mariefranceasia.com\/fashion\/asia-style\/chinese-new-year-find-perfect-modern-cheongsam-69321.html\"> bright cheery shade<\/a>, you\u2019re in the clear. Try to avoid black, white or blue as those are colours of mourning.<\/p> <h2> <span>Bring two Mandarin oranges<\/span> <\/h2> <p>Ensure that you have two Mandarin oranges with you before visiting your friend. The oranges symbolise gold during the Chinese New Year, as when it said in Cantonese \u2013<em>Kum<\/em> \u2013 it sounds like <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mariefranceasia.com\/fashion\/outfit-of-the-day-fashion\/ootd-marie-france-asia-60559.html\">gold<\/a>. Offer the oranges to your guest or the eldest person in the family. Take the oranges back home before you leave, as you\u2019re not supposed to leave your \u201cgold\u201d behind.<\/p> <h2> <span>Greet your host<\/span> <\/h2> <p>It is very important to greet your host and the elders in the family when visiting. Always greet the elders first and respect the hierarchy in the family. You can say a simple \u201cHello\u201d and if you want to be really on point add a \u201c<em>Gong xi fa cai!<\/em>\u201d. Literally it means \u201ccongratulations to wealth\u201d for the year ahead.<\/p> <h2> <span>The Ang Pow Issue<\/span> <\/h2> <p>To give or not to give? That is the question. Well you only have to give out red packets of gift money or \u201cang pows\u201d to children, elders and singles, if you\u2019re married. So if you are single and your host gives you an ang pow, don\u2019t be surprised or refuse the gift. It\u2019s tradition.<\/p> <h2> <span>Keep the conversation light<\/span> <\/h2> <p>Avoid heavy or <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mariefranceasia.com\/lifelove\/coaching-lifelove\/bonheur-15-cles-de-tal-ben-shahar-pour-etre-plus-heureux-51500.html\">unhappy topics<\/a> during your gathering, as it is inauspicious to talk about sad or controversial issues.
