Walking into the Hong Kong campus of America's\u00a0Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD)<\/strong>\u00a0last week delivered a rather enigmatic\u00a0vibe, differing from the usual ambience of a design school. The walls\u00a0were beautifully adorned with intriguing art pieces but something was definitely amiss. It all finally made sense when we walked past a corridor of 'jail cells' for SCAD Hong Kong <\/a>was actually sitting within the building of a former courthouse.<\/p>

The 'cool' meter no doubt spiked and we realised we were in the ideal venue to witness the school's inaugural fashion showcase - where innovation continues to soar within the preserved walls.<\/p>

Featuring 30 designs from senior students (the cream of the crop), the first ever showcase, curated by Michael Fink<\/strong>, Dean of School of Fashion, was an amalgamation of a diverse range of aesthetics\u00a0as street wear and\u00a0evening gowns all shared the same pedestal. Out of the 30 student designs, 2 students were from SCAD HK while the rest came from the Savannah campus.\u00a0Miss J Alexander<\/strong> of \u00a0'America\u2019s Next Top Model' and ambassador of SCAD was also present to assist the students in showcasing their works of art.<\/p>

Now the noteworthy moment throughout the presentation was when Singaporean<\/a> student, Dawn Bey's<\/strong> design stepped out onto the platform. Inspired by road workers, the neon orange and yellow dress was created to give female road workers a more stylish yet functional outfit. Other pieces that garnered a similar momentary gasp was the graffiti printed circle dress, the neon green dress in a similar silhouette and the crinkled gold foil gown.<\/p>

As the sea of industry insiders looked on with their glistening eyes, it was evident that creativity <\/a>was sprawling on the mirrored platforms. We can't fathom what forces these student designers may evolve into in the demanding realm of fashion -it's bound to be exceptional though. In the mean time, be sure to keep an eye out for our interviews with Miss J Alexander and student designer, Dawn Bey in the following days.<\/p>
