Five months after the surgery in Nantes, the grandfather of two went home January 19th and can now \"pedal like crazy\" on a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mariefranceasia.com\/health\/healthy-practices\/workout-7cycle-30361.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">stationery bike<\/a>, according to the surgeon who invented the device,\u00a0<strong>Dr. Alain F. Carpentier<\/strong>.\u00a0This is a big step from the first patient, who\u00a0died 75 days after the surgery.<\/p> <p>The doctor\u00a0described the milestone as \"Incredible\" especially considering the patient \"now walks much better than I do\", in an interview with French daily\u00a0<em>Le Parisien. <\/em>With such a great turnout, the device is expected to sell up to 160,000 Euros (SGD248,000), but not before\u00a0peer reviews\u00a0and clinical studies are completed. If successfully tested, CARMAT could save tens of thousands of lives.<\/p>  <h2> <span>What is CARMAT?<\/span> <\/h2> <p>The\u00a0device mimics the human heart\u00a0and is\u00a0essentially a\u00a0mechanical pump with an internal control system to regulate<a href=\"http:\/\/www.mariefranceasia.com\/health\/on-my-plate\/pomegranate-super-fruit-63782.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"> the blood flow<\/a>. It's powered by batteries, made of prosthetics and animal tissue and weighs around one kilogram.
