Pigmentation tends to be one of the biggest obstacles in our quest for flawless skin.<\/a> Mainly there are two types of skin pigmentation that can occur - hyper and hypo-pigmentation. Hyperpigmentation, also known as melasma is when there is an increase in melanin production leading to brown spots on the skin. Whereas hypopigmentation is the reverse where melanin production is lowered resulting in patches of lighter skin, also known as vitiligo.<\/p>

If pigmentation is not your skincare enemy then those pesky blemishes are sure to have popped up one too many times. Hence we asked Dr Malini<\/span> Munisamy, <\/strong>Medical Director from\u00a0Singapore's\u00a0Aescure Medical and Aesthetic Clinic<\/a> for her expert advice on combatting pigmentation marks and blemishes.<\/p>

What causes it:<\/span> <\/h2>
Anything that irritates the melanocytes in our skin i.e. pigment producing cells will cause pigmentation. Sun is the biggest culprit in causing pigmentation as well as making it worse. Other reasons for pigmentation include genetic, hormonal imbalance and the use of wrong skincare products.<\/div>

How to reduce pigmentation:<\/span> <\/h2>
To reduce pigmentation, often a combination of treatments is required. Topical depigmenting products such as hydroquinone based creams are quite potent and effective in reducing surface pigmentation. There are hydroquinone alternatives like koijc acid, arbutin, licorice extract, niacinamide which are available over the counter in brands like SkinCeuticals, Dr Murad, TDF etc. Topical products need to be applied for a period of time before results show. Therefore to speed up the process , often combining with chemical peels , laser and IPL gives better results. But the most essential thing above all is avoiding sun exposure<\/a> and using sunscreen daily.<\/a><\/div>

How to reduce blemishes:<\/span> <\/h2>

At the first sight of a blemish, I would advise to straight away apply an anti acne cream for a few days which contains an antibiotic and benzoyl peroxide. It is available locally in clinics as Clindoxyl gel. It acts to suppress inflammation and stops it from becoming a full blown pimple and thus reducing the chances of scarring.<\/p>
