According to Tom Smulders,\u00a0an evolutionary neurobiologist at Newcastle University\u00a0in England, the real explanation is a little more complex and a lot more interesting.<\/p> <p>According to him, having wrinkled <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mariefranceasia.com\/beauty\/get-the-look\/fotd-dewy-radiant-skin-33628.html\">skin <\/a>provides a better \"grip\" and was essential to the survival of our ancestors. Their rougher fingers and toes would allow them to hold a spear\u00a0even in the rain, uproot\u00a0moist plants and less likely to\u00a0slip on the rocks while catching\u00a0a fish in the river.<\/p> <p>While\u00a0water contact is what triggers this reaction, however, is not through the skin since studies have shown that when nerves in the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mariefranceasia.com\/lifelove\/decoding\/nos-doigts-sont-bavards-24520.html\">fingers <\/a>are damaged, this effect doesn't happen. <strong>The explanation:<\/strong> When our brain perceives that one is exposed to a humid environment for a while, it\u00a0orders the blood vessels in our\u00a0extremities to contract.
