Parents will actually get to approve or block the apps their kids want to download from the Google Play or Apple store, set limits on screen time and when it is to be automatically locked for bedtime.

Get this: it also gives you an insight into their smartphone activity through weekly and monthly activity reports. And for the non-Apple using family, here are some perks: the Android version of the app offers a few more additional features you can look forward to create a more kid-friendly browsing experience on their smartphones.

Sneak a peek into its user-friendly interface and handy features in the slideshow above. And aside to Google: on behalf of all parents, can we have this app on our shores soon too?

Sarah Khan

Read More:

Pulling the Plug: 5 Effective tips for your social media detox

What is a ‘Yes Day’?: The new parenting trend dividing the Internet

Phone Hacks: 5 Phone settings that can help kick your smartphone addiction

According to the Canadian study, children who had routine family meals had better social skills, mental health and were more physically active than their peers who do not.

By the time they turned 10, their parents, school teachers, and even the kids themselves provided details on their lifestyle habits and also well-being.

According to Pagani, the findings show that family meals are not only a sign of a good home environment, they are also an easy and helpful area to tap into when it comes to improving children’s well-being.

While routine family mealtimes are typically an Asian household tradition, it seems like more Singaporean families may not practise it, what with more dual-income households and increasing pressures at work.

However, with how it can boost your little one's mental, socio-emotional, physical development and more, it's clear that the benefits of family meal time should not be overlooked. If you haven't already, starting making a family meal a routine in your home!

Sarah Khan

Photo: Getty Images

Read More:

Body Talk: What your food cravings are actually telling you about your health

New Study: Overindulgent grandparents can pose cancer threat to children

5 Unhealthy parenting styles to ditch in 2018, according to experts

Within reasonable limits of course. It turns out, the trend was inspired by a children's book titled "Yes Day!" by Amy Krouse Rosenthal, which centers around the life of a young boy on Yes Day, a special day every year where parents would respond to all their children's requests with a "yes".

It could be letting them stay up past bedtime or even having greasy fast food for breakfast. In short - it's every kid's wishful thinking. What was a work of children's fiction soon inspired parents around the world to embrace "Yes Day" in their as well, like Jennifer Garner whose kids actually requested to sleep in a tent in their backyard. Adorable.

https://www.instagram.com/p/BZoPUICjvQ3/

Considering a Yes Day? Here's some tips

1. Keep it sporadic. Decide how many "yes days" you'll have, but we recommend keeping it to a treat for your kids once every few months.

2. Set rules with your little ones. For instance, you can set parameters like "it has to involve your siblings" or "it has to be a request that cannot exceed SGD10".

3. Not sold on a "Yes Day"? If you're not confident enough to commit to a whole day, why not try a "Yes Hour"?

Now, we know not everyone will be on board with this idea - especially not in Asia, where the idea of giving our children complete autonomy in running their day may sound like your worst nightmare. But hear us out, there may be some benefits to it.

For one, not only is it a fun experience for your kids who get to think about what they really one, it can also be surprisingly refreshing for you as a parent to not have to say "no" so many times for a change. Additionally, it also allows you an insight into what your kids really want and you'll get to know them better. So, would you try it?

Sarah Khan

Photo: Getty Images

Read More:

Splitting parenting duties is the secret to a happy marriage, according to study

The best ages for your child to experience these milestones, according to experts

Do you and your partner split your parenting responsibilities?

Not only are they responsible for more tasks, they also perform more of the traditionally "less favourable" tasks, like cleaning the bathroom and after their children, while men take care of less demanding tasks like changing a light bulb or maintaining the car.

The study discovered that working moms with a larger share of parenting and household responsibilities are at risk of jeopardising the quality of their relationship - particularly if they perceive their parenting division as "unfair" or feel "trapped" in their role as a primary caregiver in the family.

Trapped: Being a "Good" Mother vs. Personal Ambitions

Traditionally, mothers are expected to fully cater to the household. Beyond actual physical chores, they're also expected to be the primary caregiver to their children and responsible for all the planning required to keep the household running.

Needless to say, it's a demanding role to fulfill, which has led to many mothers with young children to sacrifice parts of their professional and personal life - with many opting to switch to part-time employment instead. However, many women in such situations consequently report feeling dissatisfied and trapped in being solely defined and stifled by their caregiver role - a dissatisfaction that unfortunately bleeds into their marriage as well.

Unsurprisingly, relationship satisfaction ranks better among couples who equally, or fairly, share the parenting duties (irrespective of whether their partner works full-time, part-time, or overtime) indicating that men being equally invested in raising their kids appears to be the keystone to a happy, healthy marriage. So for the fathers and fathers-to-be out there: take notes!

Sarah Khan

Photo: Getty Images

Read More:

Multitasking Mommy: 5 Tips to stay connected with your girlfriends

Tune In: 8 Brain-boosting podcasts for the busy career woman

According to new study, this (odourous) habit of your husband’s helps you live longer

‘Mom’; ‘mommy’; ‘mama’ - what’s in a name?

‘Mom’; ‘mommy’; ‘mama’ - what’s in a name?

A lot, apparently.

It seems that in the mommy sphere in the West, ‘mama’ is increasingly gaining traction as the popular maternal term to use.

This is in part thanks to celebrities, such as ultimate holistic celebrity mom Alicia Silverstone, and global companies that have now made the word a part of their branding, spawning a slew of 'mama' variations with positive, nurturing connotations. Think "Wellness Mama”... you know the drill.

Interestingly, it was only just a generation ago that “mom” reigned supreme in the West. 'Mom' was seen as a far appealing alternative to ‘mama’ or ‘mother’; the former carried class signifiers associated with either fresh-off-the-boat immigrants or fancy and Frenchified (depending on how you say it) whilst the latter felt antiquated and less intimate.

So, why the switch?

2017: In With ‘Mama’, Out with ‘Mommy’

According to Deborah Tannen, Ph.D. Professor of Linguistics at Georgetown University, ‘mama’ sounds “earthy and protective”, “strong, authoritative, yet warm”. On the other hand, 'mom' has somewhat evolved to become fraught with negative associations: 'soccer mom', 'alpha mom', 'Tiger mom', 'teen mom'. 'Mommy' in turn sounds too infantised.

This turnaround in the popularity of using ‘mama’ in the West might surprise the bulk of us here in Asia. Mama is a traditional old-school maternal term in many Asian communities. One might even argue that the opposite is true in Asia: modern Asian mothers typically shirk the traditional 'mama' for 'mom' or 'mommy'.

While there are those that have pulled out the cultural appropriation card, perhaps the bigger picture is that transition back to ‘mama’ is symbolic of mothers seeking out authenticity and returning back to their roots.

You might think it’s all about the name, but really it’s about how mothers are choosing to assert themselves and define their identity as a mother today in the 21st century. And frankly, you can't fault that.

Sarah Khan

Photo: Getty Images

Read More:

Beyonce & More: 10 Celebrity moms we love

Parenting 101: 10 Tips for first-time mothers

A neural network set up by a student from Brown University determines the top baby names of the future.

Some names might seem too stuffy or dated, while others remind you of someone you are not particularly fond of (we all have them). Well, here's a solution: you can now let artificial intelligence decide that for you.

A Neural Network that Determines Future Baby Names?

Introducing Nate Parrott: a coder and student at Brown University, who devised a way to predict baby names of the future. Without getting too much into the science of it, Parrott trained a neural network (a computer that mimics the human brain and nervous system) to learn 7,500 of the most common American baby names and to give each name a numerical representation called an 'embedding'. With the baby names now represented as numbers, Parrott is able to manipulate them by either adding or subtracting - even multiplying - them to create futuristic sounding names.

While popular baby names today include Bryan, Isabelle or Michelle, the baby name landscape in 2100 looks slightly different, according to Parrott's neural network. For one, how does Aaaort sound for your bouncing baby boy? Or perhaps Cerreleaa for your cherub-faced little girl? Or frankly, why even bother with vowels when you can have a name like Hhrsrrrrrr? We have to say though - in a world where celebrity babies are being named after directional bearings, fruits, and other truly bizarre permutations of names, anything's in the realm of possibility these days. If you want a baby name that's truly ahead of the curve, take inspiration from Parrott's list of 20 futuristic baby names below!

Presenting... The 20 Baby Names of the Future:

Pruliaa

Miiirilid

Herree

Chitoi

Deredrd

Aaaort

Nitnis

Aloora

Cerreleaa

Chhzzu

Aradey

Rarear

Jnnn

Mannie

Seeleere

Auntt

Tstilit

Lorra

Hhrsrrrrrr

Seina

Of course, it takes more than arithmetics and algorithms to determine why and how names go in and out of style. Still, even we have to (albeit begrudgingly) admit that Lorra doesn't sound too bad. What do you make of the names?

Sarah Khan

Photo: GettyImages

Read More:

Positive Parenting: 10 Tips to prevent sibling rivalry

Smartphone Helper: 10 Useful parenting apps to download
