It’s a fascinating country; the minute you think you’ve exhausted all it has to offer, she surprises you. I had frolicked on the beaches of Bali, marvelled at the cultural wonders of Yogyakarta, but I was still hungry for more. Only this time, I wanted to sink my teeth into the best of its raw natural landscapes and indigenous culture. Which was why I packed my things and set off for Lombok, the starting point of what eventually turned out to be the adventure of a lifetime.

Characterised by enthralling waterfalls and the unmistakable volcanic Mount Rinjani looming on the horizon, Lombok is an island in the West Nusa Tenggara province. Unlike the predominantly Hindu island of Bali, Lombok has a majority Muslim population and a rich, enduring indigenous culture of the Sasak people. I had booked a trip to summit Mount Rinjani with a trekking guide called Kecap (named after the legendary Indonesian soya sauce), who was indispensable in facilitating my two-day trip up to the crater rim of the mountain. We started from Senaru village, which was a two-hour drive from Mataram. Considering it was the second highest volcano in Indonesia, Rinjani proved to be a challenging - though not impossible - climb. Thank God for the recent gym sessions, I thought.

[uniqlo ids="285610" full_width="true" parallaxe="true" ]

Not many people are privy to the fact that Lombok boasts of some of the most enchanting waterfalls in the archipelago. Nestled in Senaru are the Sendang Gile and Tiu Kelep waterfalls, Lombok’s finest cascades found at the foot of the majestic Mount Rinjani. Getting to the waterfall took a short 15-minute trek through a lush rainforest on a clear path. I truly relished my trip to the waterfall - I had never felt so uninhibited plunging into the high-speed waters and taking in the majestic cascades crashing 45 metres down from a cliff above.

[uniqlo ids="286387,285643"]

From Lombok, I made my way to the surreally beautiful Flores - the homeland of the notorious Komodo dragons and the breathtaking Kelimutu tri-coloured volcanic lake. Kelimutu consists of three different lakes of varying hues: the Tiwu ata Mbupu (‘Lake of Old People’), Tiwu Nuwa Muri Koo Fai (‘Lake of Young Men and Maidens’) and Tiwu Ata Polo (‘Bewitched or Enchanted Lake’), melding together in a resultant surreal and beautifully haunting view. I learned that the locals in Flores consider the lake as a resting place for the departed souls. I caught the most beautiful molten gold sunrise over the lakes from Mount Kelimutu in the wee hours of the morning, which gave me a good vantage point to see the lakes. I also visited the Komodo National Park, home of the unique and rare Komodo Dragon, with beautiful panoramic views of lush rainforests, savannas, stunning corals and unbelievably blue seas.

[uniqlo ids="285632" full_width="true"]
[uniqlo ids="285601" full_width="true" parallaxe="true" ]
[uniqlo ids="285599" full_width="true"]

I could hardly wait for what came next: my much-anticipated visit to the Wae Rebo villages in the Manggarai district of Flores. Located 1,100 metres above sea level, this small and truly isolated village received the Top Award of Excellence from UNESCO in 2012, for its restoration of the traditional Mbaru Niang houses. The first thing that'll strike you as you enter the village are distinctly designed houses. Tall, conical and completely covered in thatch from its roof to the ground, these homes were once common to the region. Today, the inhabitants of the village are the 18th-generation descendants of Empu Maro, the founder who built the village.

[uniqlo ids="285602" full_width="true"]

Leaving the unparalleled beautiful terrains of Flores was bittersweet, but I had always been intrigued by Sumatra. Which is why the next stop in my itinerary found me in Medan’s Kuala Namu International Airport, where I regularly commuted via the ‘angkot’ (a small minivan). Medan, the capital of North Sumatra, is the largest city in Indonesia after Jakarta, Surabaya and Bandung - in fact, the largest city out of Java. Medan was the perfect gateway for me to explore the rest of Sumatra. I had carefully scheduled my itinerary to fit in traveling to Berastagi and of course, the justifiably popular and beautiful Lake Toba.

Lake Toba, located in North Sumatra, is the largest volcanic lake in the world. It took me a 4 hour car journey from Medan to Parapat town. The lake is a resultant caldera formed from a volcanic eruption 70,000 years ago, which some studies suggest also caused the previous ice age. In the centre of the sprawling lake is an actual island called Pulau Samosir, the cultural centre of the predominantly Christian Batak tribe.

[uniqlo ids="285629" full_width="true"]

I loved the unapologetically laidback vibe in Lake Toba. I swam in the warm volcanic waters of the beautiful lake, visited the beautiful 100-metre Sipisopiso waterfall, sank my teeth into some culture at the Batak Museum in Samosir Island where I also got to witness their traditional dance and stayed in a charming homestay with a puppy owner who sang, cooked and went out of the way for his guests.

[uniqlo ids="285634" full_width="true"]

Berastagi is a town in North Sumatra, just 30 minutes from the Medan’s city centre. Gunung Sibayak was my first destination. It took three hours to summit and I found the climb to be challenging, with slightly tricky and steep pathways. I was grateful that I had tossed in a water bottle and snacks for the climb up to its crater. I also climbed Gunung Sinabung, which required to board a minibus to Danau Kawar, the lake at the foot at the volcano.

Unlike in the Javanese regions of Indonesia, there is no single majority ethnic group here; rather, the largest ethnic groups include the Chinese, Javanese, Toba-Batak, Southern Indians, Northern Indians and more. I thought this was fascinating and radically different to the Malaysian ethnic fabric. The best part about this motley of ethnicities is the delightfully diverse food scene in Medan - here you’ll find the sweeter flavour palate of Javanese cuisine, spicy Padang dishes, savoury Chinese noodles and even mouthwatering Batak grilled pork. I understood why people, both locals and tourists alike, regarded it as a food city.

[uniqlo ids="285656,285655"]

I also traveled to Bandung, the capital city of West Java and the third largest city in Indonesia, after Jakarta and Surabaya. Nestled in the central highlands at an altitude of 768 metres surrounded by the beautiful Parahyangan mountains, the climate here is milder than the rest of Indonesia. Once nicknamed the Paris van Java (‘Paris of Java’) by the Dutch for its resemblance to colonial-era Paris, it has today become a popular weekend destination for Jakartans seeking to escape the bustling city atmosphere. Hiking Tangkuban Perahu, a crater on an active volcanic mountain, was my first stop in this city. Located in the northern Bandung, you can hike the mountain on foot from Lembang (the closest city to it). I found the hike manageable and not too steep. The rest of brief stint in Bandung saw me weaving in and out its numerous factory outlet stores, sinking my teeth in quintessentially Bandung dishes like the Laksa Bandung.

[uniqlo ids="285598" full_width="true"]

Pontianak, the capital of the Indonesian province of West Kalimantan on the island of Borneo, was my final destination. You’ll find the winding Kapuas River here, nestled in the dense jungles of Borneo. Pontianak is also home to the indigenous Dayak people. Deep in its rainforests, I got a taste of the Dayak way of life by staying in the traditional longhouses. This was a radically different and unforgettable experience for me - in the villages I visited, I discovered an unwavering adherence to their traditions. The elders still use traditional medicine, mark their torsos with tattoos, wear heavy earrings and perform rituals - completely undeterred by the changes in the rest of Indonesia.

[uniqlo ids="285615" full_width="true" parallaxe="true" ]

[uniqlo ids="285614" full_width="true"]

Soon enough, my adventures in Indonesia came to an end. I left with a heavy heart, but richer with experiences, sights and memories that changed my life. As I boarded my AirAsia flight from Pontianak to Kuala Lumpur, I felt glad that I took the plunge in immersing myself in a uniquely Indonesian travel adventure that was far-flung from the usual touristy traps of Bali and Jakarta, instead (literally) delving into the majestic unadulterated natural and indigenous landscape of Indonesia. And I had absolutely no regrets.

This post was written with the collaboration & support of the Ministry of Tourism Indonesia. Air Asia offers the best connectivity to Indonesia, check out their 15 destinations here!

The sheer thought of extraordinary dives and surfs in warm tropical waters, sinking my toes in white sandy beaches and feasting my eyes on stunning azure bays is my prime idea of paradise. After a hectic few weeks at work, I was itching again for a taste of adventure. Having travelled to some of the best island destinations in the world however, my eyes were set much closer to home this time: Indonesia.

As it turns out, Indonesia is home to an astounding 17,000 islands. While most people typically flock to the more familiar shores of Bali, I was drawn to her lesser-known islands. I’ve heard phenomenal stories from fellow island lovers and water sport enthusiasts about the paradisiacal beauty of its islands like Lombok and Flores that were apparently far more beautiful than Bali. It was with this in mind that I packed my bags and set off, kicking off my island-hopping adventure in Indonesia in Lombok.

Lombok, often nicknamed “an unspoiled Bali”, turned out to be a tropical haven of beaches, magnificent waterfalls and of course, the imposing Mount Rinjani. Located just east of Bali, it is the perfect gateway for tourists traveling to the famous Gili Islands and (more elusive) Flores. After a direct AirAsia flight from Kuala Lumpur, I finally landed in Lombok International Airport in Praya, Lombok.

Kuta, a sleepy coastal town just 20 minutes from the airport, was my first destination in Lombok. Not to be confused with its Balinese namesake, this world-class surfer’s paradise boasts of remote pristine beaches surrounded by unbelievably blue waters and awe-inspiring jagged mountainous landscapes. My brief stint in Kuta saw me frolicking on its beaches (Kuta Beach and Pantai Seger) and braving strong currents at its best surf breaks (Seger Reef, Air Guling and Gerupuk) before making my way to my next destination, the Gili Islands.

[uniqlo ids="284416" full_width="true"]

[uniqlo ids="284409" full_width="true" parallaxe="true" ]

Arguably Lombok’s most popular destination, Gili Trawangan, also known as Gili T, is the largest island of the three Gili Islands. It took me a two hour-long chartered boat ride from Senggigi in Lombok (the easiest way to get there) before I arrived. Despite being reputed as a ‘hippie’ party island, Gili T is also a thriving diving hotspot. Its emerald-green waters are home to an arresting array of marine life; I came nose-to-nose with green and hawksbill turtles, black-tip and white-tip reef sharks, and more. The currents here were strong though, and I found myself retreating to my eco-friendly lodge every night worn-out but buzzing with adrenaline.

[uniqlo ids="284418" full_width="true"]

[uniqlo ids="284407" full_width="true" parallaxe="true" ]

From Gili T, I made my way to Flores (Portuguese for ‘flowers’). After seeing the most spectacular pictures of this former Portuguese colony, this was the island I had been most anticipating to visit. I was absolutely thrilled to find a four-day sailing trip from Gili to Komodo, an island along the northern coast of Flores. If I thought Gili and Lombok were absolutely magical, words fail me in describing the beauty that was Komodo, Flores.

[uniqlo ids="284411" full_width="true"]

[uniqlo ids="284412" full_width="true" parallaxe="true" ]

Over the next four days, the boat ride took us on an unforgettable island adventure through the Komodo National Park: Satonda Island (where we got to hop off for a quick snorkel); Gili Laba (a beautiful island surrounded by waters in seemingly every imaginable shade of blue with fantastic views); Manta Point (aptly named for the huge manta rays abound); Pink Beach (a phenomenal snorkeling spot with over 60 types of coral reef and thousands species of fish, with sand that glows pink at sunrise!) before arriving on Komodo Island, named after the massive and lethal Komodo Dragons that prowl the island.

[uniqlo ids="284414,284415"]

My Indonesian island-hopping travels also saw me in Padang, the capital city of West Sumatra, a popular access point among tourists headed to the surfing sites of Mentawai Islands. Reputed as having some of the most perfect surfing breaks in the world, I was intrigued to pay a visit. Upon arriving at their popular surf spots such like Pagai and South Sipora, I understood why this was the surf mecca for experienced surfers: the shallow waters pack plenty of punch and you could see coral reefs peeking through the clear waters.

[uniqlo ids="284433,284423"]

[uniqlo ids="284456" full_width="true" parallaxe="true" ]

Makassar, the capital of South Sulawesi province, was my last destination on my travel itinerary. It came recommended to me by a fellow diver I had met at Gili as another diving haven. Thinking it would be a challenge to get to, I almost didn’t include it in my travel, before discovering a direct flight to and from Kuala Lumpur daily. From the city’s Fort Rotterdam, I hopped on a short day trip via boat to Pulau Samalona. Adi, my boat guide, explained to me that the island is shrinking every year, hence its active preservation efforts. It was a shame, I thought in dismay, as I took in the pristine white sands and waters so clear I could see the beautiful coral reefs from the boat.

[uniqlo ids="284419" full_width="true"]

Before I knew it, I had finally concluded my Indonesian island adventure in Makassar. After the island adventure of a lifetime, I felt completely reinvigorated, energised and with a buzzing zest for life. There's something magical in the beautiful islands and waters of Indonesia that does that to you. Over my trip, I was glad to have crossed off so many island destinations on my travel bucket list. Despite this, I still felt like there was still so much more the Indonesian archipelago had to offer. I’ll be back soon, I thought to myself as I stepped on the AirAsia aircraft in Makassar finally bounded back for home.

This post was written with the collaboration & support of the Ministry of Tourism Indonesia. It was a beautiful Friday morning, I thought, recalling the impossibly beautiful views I managed to glimpse of Bali from up in the clouds on my AirAsia flight from Kuala Lumpur. Alas; I could not believe I was finally in Indonesia.

My solo trip to Indonesia had been a long time coming. Being of half-Javanese descent, my childhood was coloured by riveting tales of beautiful Balinese sunsets, exquisite batiks, fragrant Indonesian spices and majestic temples from my grandmother, a proud Javanese matriarch who loved Indonesia deeply. It was a shame it took me this long to finally pay it a visit. Nonetheless, being at a crossroads in my life since recently walking away from a failed relationship, the time was ripe for me to rediscover myself. What better place to begin my journey of spiritual self-discovery in Indonesia than in Bali - the very island that inspired Elizabeth Gilbert in Eat, Pray, Love?

The minute I exited the airport, I was warmly greeted by my cheery driver, Made (pronounced “Ma-deh”). Made was a pleasant, cherubic man who kept me entertained throughout my hour-long car ride to Ubud, the historical, spiritual and cultural heartbeat of Bali, where I had planned to start my spiritual journey. Considering I strictly wanted a spiritual retreat I had decided to give Bali’s other popular areas like Seminyak, Legian, Kuta a miss.

Ubud was amazing. Despite the many days I spent there, I never grew tired of the sight of the gently rolling rice paddies that seem to stretch out in an infinite sea of green. My aunt told me about something called ‘sound healing’ in Ubud, which I tried the minute I arrived. Imagine being bathed in an enthralling, rich medley of sounds made by Tibetan bowls, acoustic instruments and voices that completely relaxes your body and balances your mind. It turned out to be surprisingly cathartic and healing; I would heartily recommend it to anyone.

In the days that followed my arrival in Ubud, I conscientiously practised yoga daily in the mornings and evenings at a yoga class near my hotel (there are yoga classes literally everywhere in Bali), tried ‘ecstatic dance’ - a type of uninhibited, free-form dancing in a darkened yoga studio (an interesting experience, to say the least), and met with a ‘balian’, a traditional Balinese healer. I was most looking forward to the latter.

[uniqlo ids="283291,283507"]

There are many reputed healers in Ubud, whose healing focuses on correcting the energy balances. Guru Made Sumantra came highly recommended to me by a fellow female traveller I met. He uses intuition to access his patients’ energy fields in order to bring balance and healing to their chakras. He explained to me that the reason for my exhaustion was because I had ‘holes’ in my energy fields, which was allowing people to take energy from me without giving back. “Divorced?” he asked me tentatively. I didn’t reply.

There was so much to see during my stay in Ubud, so I was grateful that my hotel recommended a local Balinese guide, Eddy, to take me to all the sites during my week-long stay there. I visited the Pura Kehen temple, a breathtaking temple founded in 1206 (which had surprisingly few visitors); bathed alongside locals in the hot springs of Tirta Empul, one of Bali’s holiest temples that dates back to 960; marvelled at stunning Balinese artworks at the Agung Rai Museum of Art; visited the Bali’s classic rice terraces at the Tegallalang village and inhaled the freshest of air while hiking along the Campuhan Ridge Walk.

[uniqlo ids="283287,283289"]
[uniqlo ids="283290" full_width="true" parallaxe="true" ]

Although I had spent my entire time in Bali nourishing my body with the freshest, organic produce at its many organic cafes, I decided to give the iconic Babi Guling, a classic Balinese roasted suckling pork dish, a try on my last night. It was a feast fit for a king. As we bid farewell, Eddy mentioned in passing Ubud got its name from an ancient Balinese word, “Ubad” which translates to ‘medicine’. How apt, I thought to myself and smiled. I did feel healed from within.

[uniqlo ids="283286"]

After a spiritually, physically and emotionally reinvigorating week in Ubud, it was time for me to bid farewell to Bali - this time for my next destination: Yogyakarta, also known as Jogja. Located in the south of Indonesia’s Central Java province, it is the capital city of the Yogyakarta Special region. I had initially considered taking a train, but decided against it upon finding a direct daily AirAsia flight between Bali and Jogja. My hour-long flight from Bali to Yogyakarta was seamless, and I could barely contain my excitement as I landed in Yogyakarta’s Adisucipto International Airport.

My primary reason to visit Jogja was to see the ancient temples, known as ‘candi’. The ‘candi’ refers to the ancient archeological temples built between the 7th and 9th century in Indonesia’s Java region, characterised by walls that were often carved with reliefs depicting various stories. Having seen spectacular pictures of the majestic Borobudur temple at sunrise, it was the first thing on my agenda. I booked a sunrise tour to the UNESCO World Heritage site at my hotel itself upon checking in.

We started the trip from my hotel at Malioboro Street to Borobudur at 3AM and arrived an hour and a half later in the inky early morning darkness. The atmosphere was magical. Nestled in the heart of the verdant and lush Kedu Plain, against the backdrop of the mighty Mount Merapi volcano, words fail me in describing the beauty of Borobudur. Our guide took us through the different arches in the temple and talked us through the history behind the 8th-Century Buddhist stupa and temple complex. Interestingly, Borobudur had laid abandoned and hidden for centuries under layers of volcanic ash and dense jungle, until British Governor Thomas Stamford Raffles was informed of a huge “lost” monument deep within the jungles near Jogja in the early 1800s.

[uniqlo ids="283307,283313"]

It soon became time to watch the sunrise. Our guide brought my little hotel tour group to the top of the Borobudur temple, where I found my spot by its central stupa. My heart started palpitating in excitement as I slowly took in the molten golden ambers that drenched the entire temple grounds. It was absolutely beautiful.

[uniqlo ids="283311" full_width="true" parallaxe="true" ]

The rest of my time in Yogyakarta was spent getting to know the fascinating history of Java - how it stood the test of time against the siege of various conquerors and empires (from the Hindus, the Dutch, the Arabs), resulting in the multicultural and religious social fabric that still remains very quintessentially Indonesian. I could learn from that level of resilience and strength, I thought. I also visited Prambanan, a 9th-century Hindu temple, where I was treated to an arresting renowned Ramayana Ballet performance, and witnessed the most spectacular sunset atop the neighbouring Ratu Boko palace ruins.

[uniqlo ids="283308,283314"]

I eventually left Jogja for Solo still reeling from all the beauty I had seen and with a deeper fascination with Javanese culture, spirituality and history. Solo, short for Surakarta, is another major city in Central Java, just 60 kilometres from Jogja. It is the other heir (together with Jogja), of the ancient Mataram Kingdom which split in 1755. Unlike Jogja however, Solo has preserved most of its Javanese essence and is far less touristy. Ironic name for a destination for me, I thought half-amused, given my newly single relationship status.

[uniqlo ids="283309" full_width="true" parallaxe="true" ]

Solo is a former royal city and home to two royal enclaves. I visited the Puro Mangkunegaran, the beautiful palace of the Mangkunegara Princes built in 1757 that was also a museum and arts and cultural centre; went to the Sahasra Adhi Pura, a Hindu temple under construction just 5 kilometres east of Solo that featured 50 miniatures of sacred sites from around the world and also had its own Kundalini yoga centre; and also took the opportunity to finally purchase some batik.

[uniqlo ids="283324,283325"]

Simply put, Batik is an ancient Javanese art of decorating cloth using wax and dye. I had grown up watching my grandmother artfully folding and twisting some of the most exquisite and intricately designed batik pieces around her waist daily. I had yet to buy any whilst in Bali and Jogja, so I made it my mission to in Solo. The shopkeeper at the batik store I visited recommended that I visit the Museum Batik Danar Hadi, a museum that houses a 10,000-piece batik collection - reputedly the biggest collection in Indonesia. I went for dinner that night wearing one of the batik pieces I bought and understood why Indonesian women love it so much: not only is it a stunning work of art, the fabric was perfect for the tropical weather.

Having grown up observing my grandmother’s meticulous beauty routine and impeccable skin, I knew that Indonesia was a treasure trove of ancient, generations-old beauty secrets. I asked my taxi driver if there was any Javanese beauty regimes in Solo I should try. He recommended me the Mandi Lulur, a traditional Javanese skincare done by rubbing special spices to the skin to exfoliate it. It turns out that it was highly popular across the hotels in the city, so I requested for an appointment at my hotel that afternoon itself and left with smooth, baby-soft skin. I was sold.

[uniqlo ids="283326,283327"]

My stint in Solo was brief as I had to fly to Jakarta to visit a friend’s wedding for the weekend. While there, I took the opportunity to visit a famous traditional Jamu spa, where I was spoiled with various traditional Javanese beauty treatments, just like the Javanese princesses were in the keraton (Bahasa for ‘palace’) back in the day. Jakarta was busy, bustling and radically different to the spiritual and calm pace of my previous two weeks in Indonesia, so I was itching to continue my travels once the wedding was over.

My last destination in Indonesia was Surabaya, the state that my maternal side of the family was from and, interestingly, the region I knew least about. It was an hour and a half direct flight to Juanda Airport from Jakarta. My first stop was the Cheng Hoo Mosque, one of the prime religious sites for Chinese Muslim Indonesians. Surabaya, unknown to many, actually has a large Chinese population, who originally arrived as traders before settling in. My first impression was that the mosque looked rather like a Buddhist pagoda. Unlike other mosques I had visited in Asia and beyond, the Cheng Hoo Mosque was in a vivid red, yellow and green hues, with a mix of dragon and lion carvings. I was fascinated.

[uniqlo ids="283356" full_width="true"]

I also visited the Klenteng Sanggar Agung, a well-known Chinese temple in the city overlooking the water that is a place of pilgrimage for those who follow the Tridharma faith, and the Gereja Kelahiran Santa Perawan Maria, Surabaya’s oldest church. They were a beautiful testament to the multi-faith and religious diversity of Surabaya. I also got the pleasure of watching the Reog dance, a vigorous traditional dance.

[uniqlo ids="283346, 283341"]

Before I knew it, it was my last night in Indonesia after a month-long travel. It was time for me to head home. Indonesia, in short, was amazing and absolutely life-changing, I thought, smiling at the affable AirAsia stewardess as I boarded my flight home. It inspired me how Indonesia had beautifully adapted through its different seasons - the foreign influences and empires - and yet withstood the test of time through it all. I could learn from that. My trip had been completely enriching and though I may not have found love like Elizabeth Gilbert did, I learned to love myself again. Which is the best kind of love you need, in retrospect.

This post was written with the collaboration & support of the Ministry of Tourism Indonesia. Magnificent beaches, an awesome cafe scene, and gorgeous sunsets by the waterfront. What more could you ask for?

DAY ONE

Morning

Start your day off with one of Canggu’s main attractions: surfing. With world-class waves that crash delightfully onto the shore, shake off that sleepiness and get ready for the exciting vacation that awaits you. Echo Beach is a popular hotspot for intermediate surfers (with stronger and longer waves), bound to entice your inner wave-riding addict. If you’re new to the game, we would recommend Batu Bolong Beach, known also as Old Man’s Beach, with black sand that is oh-so Instagrammable. This is the perfect place for beginners, with smaller waves that will be a lot easier to handle. Berawa Beach is another option as well, albeit a little further from Canggu, but its distance makes this quieter spot a peaky beach break.

Afternoon

Once you’re done hanging ten, go for a well-deserved lunch (or brunch) break. While any of the many healthy cafes around Canggu works, our hearts are rather set on The Shady Shack’s tempeh bowl, or the avocado toast at Betelnut Cafe. At both these places, you'll be greeted with good views and even greater food. And, with their selection of vegan and vegetarian options, you never need to worry about getting a second (or third, no judgement here!) order in.

Don’t forget to check in to your hotel as well! You can never go wrong with a decent hotel and we are recommending the Ametis Villa for a luxurious stay like no other. The sanctuary will make you feel like absolute royalty. Hotel Tugu Bali is also another option which provides a rustic oasis that is hard to beat.

We are proposing a horseback ride or a mountain bike ride for your next activity. Both options will get you to explore the coastal village of Canggu in different ways. Walk through rice paddies and along the amazing beaches on a beautiful horse, or explore the roads less taken with biking trails for everyone of every level. With time to spare before night arrives, settle into one of the hotspots to see the sunset and watch as the magnificent exchange happens. Tanah Lot is practically famous for its sunset view, so be prepared to share the experience with possibly every other tourist in the area, but the Batu Bolong Beach is an amazing spot as well.

Night

For dinner, you have more than a few options, with the sheer amount of eateries around. If you’re seeking a little fancy dinner, La Finca is a Spanish tapas restaurant that never fails to deliver, while La Baracca is an Italian place that infuses local tastes in their dishes. Deus Ex Machina - Temple of Enthusiasm is the place to go if you’re looking for something a bit different. Happy hour is from 5pm to 7pm, so go during those hours to get a two-for-one drink. And then, kickstart the night of fun at Pretty Poison, an intriguing mix of bar-and-skate park.

DAY TWO

Morning

Wake up, sleepyhead! Canggu is known for the healthy living mantra, and yoga fits the bill to a T, so drop by for an early morning session. We are recommending The Chillhouse, which also provides a surfing and biking experience. Get into your downward dog (hopefully you aren’t too hungover) and feel your body melding into poses, before dropping by Nude Canggu for their crispy Korean chicken burger or Crate Cafe’s brekkie board.

Afternoon

You can’t go wrong with Finns Recreation Club, an entertainment and recreation club that’s perfect if you want to spend the whole day relaxing. Previously known as the Canggu Club, there’s a water park and pool bar, so there’s something for everyone. If that’s not your speed, Canggu’s Sunday Market is a popular choice as well, where you can find fresh produce and handmade jewellery that are sure to delight. It’s only open from 9am to 2pm, so be sure to go a little early

Grab an early lunch with Bro Resto’s dumplings and pork belly potato gratin, or Piring Daun’s vegetarian curry. Then, go for a relaxing spa treatment — because a trip to Indonesia is definitely not complete without the signature Balinese massage. If you’re still up for something fun, consider surfing one more time, or simply take a nice breather by the beaches to enjoy the view and the sun.

Night

End the day with a magnificent dinner at Ji Restaurant Bali, where you can get amazing sushi and cocktails that won't disappoint. Tugu Bali Restaurant serves up authentic Indonesian fare that will make leaving for your flight that much harder. Be transported into a whole different dimension, of days gone by, and feel yourself wrapping up the trip with a bright smile on your face. From its mouthwatering food selection, to the astonishingly extensive volcanoes, to the signature rice paddies, it is no wonder this little island in Indonesia has made itself a prominent and popular location for visitors who are in search of a relaxing yet eye-opening vacation. Dreaming of an island paradise? Look no further.

From embarking on a plane to reaching your destination, it is easy to have an overly picturesque idealisation of what your holiday would be like. After all, the images on Google didn’t account for the horde of excited tourists (which may or may not include you) heading in one direction. So, yeah, the picture you’re dying to take of yourself with the perfect sunset backdrop might not be exactly feasible, unless you don’t mind the twelve children running in the background.

But, holidays don’t have to be like this, especially not in Indonesia. With over 17000 islands, is it any surprise that the world’s largest archipelago has a myriad of hidden islands that you’ve probably never heard of? Sure, Bali is great, but there’s so much more to the country than this tourist-infested island, especially one as diverse as Indonesia. So, the next time you are planning a trip to the Emerald of the Equator, perhaps consider one of these 10 islands that will defy your definition of an island paradise in the most beautiful of ways.

Lee Hui Bing

This post was written with the collaboration & support of the Ministry of Tourism Indonesia.
