Dear parents: what is avoidant attachment style - and how can we fix it?

In fact, one of the most important parts of raising a child is getting them to understand that we love them no matter what and that we are the person they need to turn to in times of hardship and crisis.

Unfortunately, sometimes, simply saying “I love you”, or catching them when they fall (literally and figuratively) isn’t enough for your child to understand that you are, and will always be, their biggest cheerleader in life.

What is the 'ideal' attachment style?

Ideally, your child should have the “secure attachment” style, a style where a child feels comfortable with expressing their most automatic feelings, whether it be distress or happiness. Everything else, including ambivalent, avoidant, and disorganized attachment styles, fall under the “insecure attachment” category.

These attachment styles are so important to your child’s growth that is has been proved that children who showed signs of secure attachment with their mothers are more likely to succeed in their platonic and romantic relationships as they grow older, and are even believed to be better at socializing!

What is broken can be fixed

But even if you do spot some familiar signs, do not fret. Professionals believe that attachment styles are malleable and can be fixed over time. Additionally, attachment styles are also highly dependent on your child’s innate personality - so chances are, your child just needs to learn to get out his or her shell.

Here are five signs your child has an avoidant attachment style, and specific ways you can make your relationship with your child an even more fulfilling one!

Kanako Sugawara

READ MORE:

What is a ‘Yes Day’?: The new parenting trend dividing the Internet

Having family meals create healthier children, new study finds

5 Unhealthy parenting styles to ditch in 2018, according to experts

Are you guilty of showering your kids with toys? If yes, you might actually be hindering their development.

Beyond being objects of entertainment and distraction, toys are actually great windows of learning opportunities for your kids.

Among its many well-documented benefits, playing with toys help kids build their imagination, develop motor skills, and learn a host of cognitive skills they'll need to progress to other stages of their lives.

Now, while the benefits of toys are clear and well-documented, is there such a thing as too many toys?

As it turns out, there is.

But surely the more toys you surround your kids with, the more benefits they reap?

No - in fact, it's quite the reverse.

Just last year, a 2017 study by the University of Toledo in Ohio suggested that having fewer toys actually result in healthier play and better cognitive development in children, rather than an abundance of toys which "reduced quality of (their) play".

The study observed 36 toddlers aged between 18 to 30 months in free-play sessions. One group of kids were given 4 toys to play with, while other was given 16. The result: the kids who played with fewer toys had a significantly higher quality of play, the kids who had more options to play with.

This study echoes the sentiments of previous experts who have championed fewer, or even toy-free play areas for young children, citing their development for reasons why less is more when it comes to toys.

You might ask - what if I want to spoil my kids? After all, showering them with toys is exactly how some parents show their love.

In fact, kids were found to be happier when playing with fewer toys.

Well, we hate to break it to you, but it turns out that kids are actually happier with fewer toys.

More recently, a 2018 study suggested that kids have happier and healthier playtime sessions when they have fewer toys to play with, according to Good Housekeeping.

The psychology behind this has to do with the idea of choice: during their early developmental years, children have short attention spans. When given dozens of toys, they feel overwhelmed with the different choices and often end up playing with nothing at all. Also, having too many toys makes kids play passively, rather than actively. Instead of playing with their toys, they expect to be amused by their toys.

How much is too much, then?

The fewer the toys, and the more streamlined their play area, the better it is for your kids, parents!

According to a social experiment in Germany, kids actually displayed far more imagination, creativity, and social skills when they convinced a kindergarten classroom to remove all its toys for three months, according to The Independent.

So yes; refraining from buying your little one the next new trendy toy fad is not Scrooge-like mom behaviour, mamas. Your kid will thank you for that in the future.

Sarah Khan

Photos: Getty Images

Read More:

Roberston Quay: 5 Best family-friendly cafes in the neighbourhood your kids will love

Shangri-La Singapore introduces luxury fantasy-themed suites just for kids

5 Kid-friendly museums in Singapore perfect for a weekend of family fun

It turns out it actually can, according to science.

There are numerous old wives' tales on how you can predict your baby's gender. Perhaps one of the most dubious ones is that a salty food craving means you're having a boy, and a sweet one a girl. However, these theories aren't founded in any science (no surprises there) and have - well - been proven to be wrong.

Interestingly, a series of studies has surfaced an unlikely factor that can influence the gender of your baby: your personality.

Yes, according to the study, women with 'more dominant' personalities (therefore indicating a higher level of testosterone than average) are more likely to have boys, while women with a 'milder' temperament were found to be more likely to have girls.

In fact, the study's lead researcher, reproductive scientist Dr. Valerie Grant, has an 80% accuracy track record when it comes to predicting the gender. Netflix has just announced a new set of parental control that lets parents specifically decide on what their kids are allowed to watch.

Just last week, Netflix announced that it will be releasing new updates that give parents more control over what their kids can watch.

With the new updates, parents can now set custom PINs for specific shows and movies they deem inappropriate for their children - irrespective of the show's actual age-recommended ratings. So if you think your little one's too young for Frozen, you even have that option of restricting it from them (sorry kids - you've got to Let It Go!).

In addition to the parenting controls, the new update will also reflect the maturity label ratings for all its shows more clearly on Netflix. This will let you as parents make better judgement on deciding which shows you'd let your kids watch.

It can be scary navigating this digital age as a parent raising young children; which is why it's always heartening when global giants such as Netflix and Google (with its recent launch of Family Link in the US and Canada) come onboard on issues of content control for kids.

Unfortunately, Netflix has announced that these updates will be rolled out globally over the next few months, and across various devices you can download Netflix on (i.e. smartphones, televisions, laptops). So watch this space to find out when it will be officially released in Asia!

This new announcement also nicely coincides with Disney's anticipated (and also presumably family-friendly) new streaming device launch - we're definitely keeping our eyes peeled for that!

Sarah Khan

Photo: Netflix Singapore

Read More:

Netflix and Chil-dren: 10 Educational kids’ shows worth watching on Netflix

What is a ‘Yes Day’?: The new parenting trend dividing the Internet

5 Unhealthy parenting styles to ditch in 2018, according to experts

However, caffeinated beverages during pregnancy are an increasing controversy that expecting mothers ought to pay close attention to.

Why is Caffeine Dangerous during Pregnancy?

Caffeine crosses the placenta to your baby, so if you're taking take espresso, your baby certainly is too. This is a bad idea because coffee raises blood pressure and heart rate - which is not ideal for your developing baby.

While coffee is the obvious caffeine culprit, did you know that tea leaves actually contain more caffeine than coffee beans before they are brewed? If you're committing to cutting caffeine during pregnancy, this means saying goodbye to coffee, black tea, green tea and white tea - all these teas come from the same caffeinated tea plant.

Fear not mamas, you are still due a warm cuppa - minus the caffeine. How? A herbal tea! Herbal teas are teas made from, flowers, seeds, berries, plant roots, and other leaves (excluding the tea leaf). Parents will actually get to approve or block the apps their kids want to download from the Google Play or Apple store, set limits on screen time and when it is to be automatically locked for bedtime.

Get this: it also gives you an insight into their smartphone activity through weekly and monthly activity reports. And for the non-Apple using family, here are some perks: the Android version of the app offers a few more additional features you can look forward to create a more kid-friendly browsing experience on their smartphones.

Sneak a peek into its user-friendly interface and handy features in the slideshow above. Breast pumping at work is an issue that many women face upon return. Clarissa Lim, 29, and a working mother of a ten-month-old at our Marie France Asia office, started pumping while still at home to get used to doing it and to get her baby used to it. She says that it requires organisation and time, but she is glad she's doing it. "I have friends who have been scared to go back to work, because they know it is going to make it harder to finish their work, but you really need to maximise your working time," she adds.

It’s never easy being the one to pump in the office, especially if nobody else is doing it. The answer is yes, according to The University of Michigan - but why?

The findings, published in the Emotion journal, claims that teenagers who do any of these things for over 40 hours per week, reported the most negative effects.

They also found that teenagers who had 5 hours of screen-time a day were twice as likely to be unhappy compared to those with only 1 hour of usage per day.

And no surprises here; researchers said that teens who socialised in person more (and less so online), were the 'happiest' by far. When defining about 'happiness', factors like self-esteem and life satisfaction are taken into account as a gauge.

Although less screen time was beneficial, those who recorded no screen time at all were even more unhappy in fact, proving a healthy balance is always best.

These findings come at a time when we are gaining increased knowledge on the effects of social media on depression and anxiety. These issues are something many parents are concerned about, and struggle to tackle.

Getting your kids to get this balance right can be difficult, especially when everyone seems to be on their phones 24/7, so here are a few tips to get your teens on the right track!

Shelina Assomull

Photos: Pixabay/ Unsplash

Read More:

What is a ‘Yes Day’?: The new parenting trend dividing the Internet

5 Unhealthy parenting styles to ditch in 2018, according to experts

According to the Canadian study, children who had routine family meals had better social skills, mental health and were more physically active than their peers who do not.

By the time they turned 10, their parents, school teachers, and even the kids themselves provided details on their lifestyle habits and also well-being.

According to Pagani, the findings show that family meals are not only a sign of a good home environment, they are also an easy and helpful area to tap into when it comes to improving children’s well-being.

While routine family mealtimes are typically an Asian household tradition, it seems like more Singaporean families may not practise it, what with more dual-income households and increasing pressures at work.

However, with how it can boost your little one's mental, socio-emotional, physical development and more, it's clear that the benefits of family meal time should not be overlooked. If you haven't already, starting making a family meal a routine in your home!

Sarah Khan

Photo: Getty Images

Read More:

Body Talk: What your food cravings are actually telling you about your health

New Study: Overindulgent grandparents can pose cancer threat to children

5 Unhealthy parenting styles to ditch in 2018, according to experts
