Time to give up on bacon during your weekend brunch feastin'?

Mania can last anywhere from a few weeks to even a few months and is also a primary symptom of bipolar disorder.

The medical histories of over 1000 people (with and without psychiatric disorders) were examined in the study, which found that the consumption of nitrates found in processed meats is associated with poor mental health. The same series of experiments conducted on rats found that the animals exhibited signs of manic-like hyperactivity after a few weeks.

No other foods were found to have significant links to psychiatric disorders in the study. "We looked at a number of different dietary exposures and cured meat really stood out," shares lead author Robert Yolken, M.D. However, the participants were not asked to share how regularly they ate processed meats or how long they have been eating them for, which means it was impossible to establish how much eating them may increase the risk of manic episodes.

It's safe to say this adds on to the growing research on how processed meats can not only affect your physical health (it's been strongly linked to cancer), but also your mental health. It's certainly no trifling issue either, considering manic episodes can cause delusional thoughts which can lead to risk-taking behaviour.

As it turns out, you truly are what you eat. For this reason, it might be best to skip out on that bacon-filled brunch or bak kwa fix this weekend..

Sarah Khan

Photo: Getty Images

Read More:

Body Talk: What your food cravings are actually telling you about your health

The famous brunch dish you should never order, according to Anthony Bourdain

New Study: Non-smoking Asian women are more at risk of lung cancer

For years, men have always been more likely to get lung cancer than women - till now.

For years, men have always been more likely to get lung cancer than women - until now.

Recent studies have been flipping the script on this trend, revealing that the rates of lung cancer among women - in particular, younger women - and non-smokers are rising.

LUNG CANCER: WOMEN ARE MORE AT RISK TODAY - EVEN IF THEY DO NOT SMOKE

Globally, while the number of men diagnosed with lung cancer has fallen over the past two decades, it's risen for women by 27%. Researchers haven't figured out why, although some studies suggest that it might be due to the fact that women react differently to nicotine, and more adversely to the carcinogens found in tobacco.

And this doesn't just apply to smokers. "Never-smokers", as they are referred to in the medical field, have also been discovered to be at greater risk.

A study by the National Cancer Centre Singapore (NCCS) found that the 3 in 10 lung cancer patients here are 'never-smokers', and the numbers are rising. In fact, despite never having smoked, more than half of 'never-smokers' seen at NCCS are typically diagnosed with advanced stages of lung cancer (i.e. Stage 3 or 4).

According to Dr. Ang Mei Kim, a consultant at NCCS, non-smoking women are more vulnerable to than non-smoking men. The numbers are staggering: 70% of 'never-smokers' diagnosed with lung cancer are women. This is also true in the UK, where a study of lung cancer patients found that one in 5 women who develop lung cancer have never smoked a cigarette, compared to one in 10 men.

Why? Researchers suggest that this disparity likely exists because of their exposure to second-hand smoke. Globally, men have statistically and historically smoked more than women, which means that the chance of a non-smoking woman having a smoking man as a partner is higher. According to the BBC, inhaling second-hand smoke makes it 20 to 30% more likely for someone to get lung cancer and is responsible for 430,o00 deaths each year - an astounding 64% of which are women.

NON-SMOKING ASIAN WOMEN ARE MORE LIKELY TO GET LUNG CANCER

It also appears that non-smoking Asian women are more vulnerable to lung cancer than their Western counterparts. "Less than 4% of Chinese women in Singapore smoke, yet, Singapore has a higher lung cancer rate among women compared to other countries like Germany and Italy, where one in five women smoke," shares Dr. Ang in an interview with Health Xchange Singapore.

It's certainly daunting news. Unfortunately, it's not as easy to define specific risk factors for most non-smoking lung cancer patients, according to Dr. Ang - although a few commonly-cited risk factors include exposure to second-hand smoke at home or at work, environmental pollutants, among others.

Non-smokers naturally tend to have a 'false sense of safety' about lung cancer, which can make it easy to overlook symptoms at an earlier stage. If anything, these recent findings point to the fact that even if you've never puffed on a cigarette in your life, it's important to be aware that lung cancer doesn't discriminate.

Sarah Khan

Photo: Getty Images

Read More:

Your favourite lip balms contain cancer-causing ingredients, according to new French study

Can the age you had your first alcoholic drink affect your risk of breast cancer?

Who knew butter would be the solution?

People go to great extents to lose a couple of pounds. Intense exercise regimes, cutting out carbs and ridiculous diets are some of them but who would’ve thought adding butter to your morning coffee could do the trick?

If you’re thinking that butter in coffee isn’t a new invention, you’re right. Just a trip to the nearest kopitiam and you’ll be able to order yourself kopi gu you, which is essentially coffee with butter. No one really questioned this unique combination until an American entrepreneur rebranded it the Bulletproof Coffee. When the West finally caught up with the trend, Dave Asprey, entrepreneur and health and fitness fanatic modified the traditional beverage into a health product.

The Bullet Coffee is supposedly brimming with healthy fats that satiate your hunger and won’t cause any crashes throughout the day. A cup can keep you full for up to 6 hours, thus reducing your calorie intake and those few pounds. It also helps as an energy booster that can keep your mind active and clear.

But wait - isn’t butter unhealthy?

You would think drinking melted butter would raise your cholesterol levels and the number on the scale. However, Asprey specifically states to only add unsalted grass-fed butter or ghee to your coffee, not adding more than two tablespoons. Similar to the fats in avocado, the butter puts your body in a fat-burning mode without raising your cholesterol. Also, the Bulletproof Coffee should be taken as a meal on its own and not with food.

Shona Menon

Photo: Getty Images

READ MORE:

'Keto Diet': The diet to reverse diabetes and lose weight?

Liquid Tricks: 10 Delicious drinks that will help you lose weight

Slimming Scents: Can certain smells lower your appetite to help you lose weight?

It would be a dream if we could lose an extra few pounds lounging around in our bathtubs. Well, guess what? It’s a dream come true.

In a study carried out by Loughborough University, 14 men were soaked in a warm bath of 40 degrees Celsius. By the end of an hour, they burned a jaw-dropping 130 calories —as much as a 30-minute walk!

This new discovery is called “passive heating”, which is when our bodies produce heat shock proteins as a response to stressful conditions. The raised levels of this protein help with insulin and improve blood sugar control, thus burning calories.

However, don’t get too excited just yet. Taking a hot bath may burn some calories but it still wouldn’t give you the health benefits a proper work out would. At the end of the day, an hour at the gym would definitely burn more calories than a 60-minute hot bath while also improving your overall health and well being.

But who says you can’t take a dip in the tub after a workout to burn off a few extra calories?

Shona Menon

Photo: Getty Images

READ MORE:

Why saunas & Korean bath houses are great for your health, according to a new study

Bathroom Bliss: 10 Ways to turn your bathroom into a spa

Make Yourself Sweat: 10 Exercises that burn the most calories

Get this: there is a significant increase in breast cancer risk when you consume alcohol before you hit 30 - especially so before your first pregnancy.

It's a hard truth to hear, but women actually have a one in eight chance of developing breast cancer in their lifetime.

And it feels like we're seemingly surrounded by a minefield of cancer-causing factors. After all, recent studies have surfaced that seemingly innocuous everyday items like contraceptives and even lip balm have been tied to an increased risk of cancer.

No surprises here, but apparently your alcohol intake - or more precisely, when you've had your first drink - can increase your risk of developing breast cancer.

HOW FIRST SIP OF ALCOHOL AFFECTS YOUR CANCER RISK

The highest risk of breast cancer for women coincides around the time from her first period to her first pregnancy, which makes it crucial that women spend these years minimising the risk of the cancer.

Breast cells in women rapidly multiply between their teenage years and their first pregnancy, as shared by breast surgeon Heidi Memmel to Readers' Digest. Any potentially cancerous cells during this period are growing at a fast pace, which makes your young adult years a crucial period to reduce your risk.

A woman's breast tissue goes through biological changes after pregnancy that makes their cells more resistant to cancer, explaining why non-childbearing women, or women who have children later in life, are more at risk of cancer than those who have them younger.

The link between alcohol and breast cancer isn't fully fleshed out, although the commonly accepted theory is that it affects the estrogen and estrogen receptors in the breast tissue.

According to Dr. Memmel, there is a significant increase in breast cancer risk when you consume alcohol before you hit 30 - especially so if you started drinking at an early age. A study published in Women's Health found that consuming alcohol before your first pregnancy actually increases your risk of breast cancer, with a 7 to 10% increased risk for each drink consumed daily.

I HAD MY FIRST DRINK EARLY - SHOULD I BE CONCERNED?

Now, even if you've had your first sip fairly early, there are other factors at play - more importantly, your drinking patterns right now as an adult. Binge drinking, in particular, which is defined as having four or more drinks in two hours, can dramatically increase your risk of breast cancer.

If anything, the message is crystal clear: don't be tempted to knock back those glasses of wine and spirits during happy hour, ladies.

Sarah Khan

Photo: Getty Images

Read More:

Going Unda’: How your vagina changes in your 30s (and what to do about it!)

Be Aware: 5 Breast cancer risk factors all women should know

New Study: White wine associated with increased risk of skin cancer

We've got to say - the mind is pretty powerful stuff.

They were then told that there's a new technique that could determine how well they had slept using sensors that measured their pulse, heart rate, and brain frequency.

This 'technique' doesn't actually exist.

Those surveyed were then randomly split into two groups: one who was told their deep sleep was above average, and one who was told theirs was below average.

Is It All in the Mind?

Consequently, both groups attended a lecture which focused on how a better sleep quality improves their cognitive function. This caused those who believed their sleep quality was above average to presume that they were more alert, and conversely so for the other group.

All the participants eventually participated in a test, where those who thought their sleep was above average performed significantly better on the test.

In essence, the study proves that if you believe you're well-rested, your brain will perform better - regardless of your actual sleep quality. In the same vein, if you're constantly harping on how tired you are, you're perpetuating that reality for yourself.

No doubt, the mind is pretty powerful stuff. Next question: does this apply to losing weight as well?

Sarah Khan

Photo: Getty Images

Read More:

9 Therapeutic house plants proven to boost health, happiness & brain power

Office Hacks: 5 Essential oils to keep on your desk to boost productivity & mood

Right Vibes: How your bedroom decor could be affecting your sex life

Coffee might soon come with a cancer warning - at least in California.

The ruling follows a lawsuit made by a non-profit, which claims that Starbucks and other coffee companies do not warn their customers that drinking their coffee exposes them to acrylamide.

In California, acrylamide is listed as a chemical that requires a warning label. According to the judge, the coffee retailers failed to prove that acrylamide, which forms during the coffee roasting process, was not dangerous to coffee drinkers.

It's not new that the conversation on coffee can be quite polarising. On one hand, the president of America's National Coffee Association claims that "coffee has been shown, over and over again, to be a healthy beverage."

According to the World Health Organisation however, while there is "no conclusive evidence" that drinking coffee causes cancer, drinking any beverage (coffee included) at extremely hot temperatures can actually cause cancer of the oesophagus.

The recommend drinking your coffee at about 65 degrees Celsius. So instead of wolfing your morning cuppa immediately, wait for it to pipe down before you enjoy your first sip.

And there you have it - would you want your coffee to come with a cancer warning? Or is ignorance simply bliss?

Sarah Khan

Photo: Getty Images

Read More:

According to experts, this is the best time of the day to drink coffee

Cute Coffees: 9 Places in Singapore with the most adorable latte art

Perk Me Up: 8 Healthy alternatives to coffee for an energy boost

The study found a cancer-causing gene that can be passed on from grandmothers, to fathers, to their daughters. This research means new ways to discover the illness early!

It turns out that women could inherit a few types of ovarian cancer from their father's genes, according to new research.

Published in the Public Library of Science (PLOS), the study has discovered that a father can unknowingly be affected by a certain gene, which is then pass it on his female offspring. This gene can then develop ovarian cancer, explaining how it is possible for a woman to have ovarian cancer without her mother having a history of it.

The Paternal Gene

Ovarian cancer does not have any specific early symptoms, and yet is the 8th most common cancer, making it hard to spot and easy to miss until later. It is a disease only women suffer from, so fathers are not often considered when looking at hereditary inheritance.

Although the gene that has been discovered usually protects against tumours forming, mutated versions of the gene can do the opposite. If a mother has a mutated version of this gene, it could then be passed on to her son. A new study has found that drinking red wine can benefit oral hygiene by preventing bacteria in your mouth. Hoorah!

Red wine contains chemicals, which are antioxidants, that have the ability to stop bacteria from sticking to your gums. The new study conducted by the Spanish National Research Council in Madrid, found that this prevents cavities and plaque from forming and then attacking your teeth, plus can improve bad breath - who said anything about wine breath?

These mysterious antioxidants are known as polyphenols and there are two types of them. Both of these types, found in red wine, stop harmful nasties from sticking to the walls of your gums. By doing this, it looks like swooshing a sip around your mouth may actually be to your benefit!

Don't order a bottle for yourself just yet though girl. The research, which was published in the Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry found that although red wine contains this magic chemical, it would have to be swooshed around your mouth for about 47 hours. To all the wine drinkers capable of this, we salute you, but us mere mortals can't keep up.

The moral of the story is there another reason to love red wine (did we need one?) but don't start going bottoms up just yet!

Shelina Assomull

Photos: Unsplash

Read More:

Wine Yoga, Doga & More: The 6 quirkiest yoga styles to try in Singapore?

Cheers! 9 Surprising health benefits of drinking red wine

Vineyard Vacations: 10 Trips every wine lover should take
