It works to stimulate skin rejuvenation through engaging the right receptors responsible for anti-inflammation and promoting healing, and also activating the pathway to boost your skin’s recovery and resilience.

Scientific jargon aside, it truly works within your deeper skin layers to repair damaged DNA at the cellular level - in short, fighting the signs of ageing right at its roots.

Being an enthusiastic dabbler of facials and all things new in beauty, I was keen to go give it a try - in the name and pursuit of healthy, glowing skin. Now available at SW1 clinic, the latest brainchild of renowned aesthetic doctor Dr. Low Chai Ling (who also previously helmed the Sloane Clinic), the PDRN Cellular Facial harnesses the benefits of PDRN to stimulate cellular regeneration and boost skin recovery to achieve that coveted glow.

Who is it for?

Chatting with the SW1 team prior to my facial, they shared that the PDRN Cellular Facial is targeted and designed for women in their mid-thirties and up - or basically anyone with visible signs of ageing looking to fight those signs.

Granted, considering I’m still in my mid-twenties, I don’t necessarily have any distinguishable wrinkles or fine lines (at least on the surface level, anyway). But I knew that my years of complacency with SPF and a healthy skin care routine must have left a mark on deeper dermis or cellular levels - and I was committed to repairing them!

The PDRN Facial Experience

The 9-step session starts with a deep cleansing to rid your skin of impurities and dead cells. But first, a cold, numbing cream is applied for 2 to 3 minutes. Once the numbing cream has set, the aesthetician exfoliated my skin with their in-house Gold Flakes Scrub to slough away any dead skin, allowing for better penetration of PDRN’s skin-loving benefits.

After exfoliation, the skin-healing molecules of PDRN is applied to the face with a derma roller (used only once for each client for hygiene reasons). What follows next is sonophoresis (or sound wave therapy), which is key in driving and infusing all the vital nutrients into your deeper dermis layers, as well as promoting a more lifted, youthful-looking skin.

Next, my skin was treated to both the White Plasma and Vitamin C powder which is touted to help brighten the skin. Following that, the ultra-luxe 24K Gold Mask, designed to fight the signs of ageing by reducing fine lines and wrinkles, was applied to my skin and left it looking firmer, smoother and more luminous. Lastly, a layer of moisturiser was applied to my skin, which the aesthetician will select depending on your skin type.

VERDICT

Now, I’m certainly no novice to the world of facials - I’ve tried many, loved some; been disappointed by some. While some facials leave your skin looking and feeling great immediately after the session, the benefits admittedly don’t last past the next day.

Not with this one, though. Not only did my skin look genuinely healthy and glowing post-treatment, I can genuinely vouch for how it’s truly rebooted my skin from within on a deeper level since.

Which is why when you’re looking for a great, non-invasive, effective and skin-boosting supercharge, the PDRN Cellular Facial Treatment at SW1 certainly comes highly recommended.

SWI Clinic is located at Paragon Shopping Center, 290 Orchard Road #13-01 to 06. The PDRN Cellular Facial Treatment (75 minutes) is now available at SW1 Clinic at SGD481.50.

Sarah Khan

Photo: Getty Images

READ MORE:

We tried a -15 degree Celsius cryotherapy facial – here’s what happened

10 Weird & exotic facial treatments that will definitely pique your interest

Facial Footnotes: 3 Signs your facial is not suitable for your skin

The post The Secret to Youthful Skin? And granted, it does make sense: after all, why dwell on the past when the productive thing to do is to look forward and channel your energy on new projects?

Interestingly, a recent study by researchers from Rutgers University, the University of Pennsylvania and Duke University might be flipping the script on what it takes to performing well in stressful, high-pressure situations.

According to the study, people who spent 10-minutes writing about a stressful moment they're experiencing actually performed better at tasks that required long-term consistency and persistence.

The logic? Pretty simple - this simple act of fleshing out your frustrations and feelings during difficult periods helps you avoid collapsing under pressure, and may build your resistance against future stressful situations.

It's certainly a departure from what we think and know about 'staying positive' in the face of challenges and failure. However, it turns out that allowing yourself to embrace your Debbie Downer every now and then is actually helpful to you in the long run.

In an interview with MIC, Brynne DiMenichi, a doctoral candidate from Rutgers University-Newark, likens it to doing pushups to build our strength. According to DiMenichi, writing about a stressful moment helps develop resilience in future stresses (much like a muscle), allowing us to perform better at crunch time. No doubt, it's a simple and brilliant trick that she recommends people to adopt, whether you're in the midst of intense project deadlines at work or preparing for a major examination.

“For a really long time we’ve been told to stay positive,” DiMenichi said. “But writing about a past failure changed the way that a participant responded physiologically to the possibility of a new failure.”

It's especially interesting that the authors had actually initially set out to prove the opposite. That writing about a prior success would lead to better performance - in the spirit of actualising a dream into reality if you will. In a similar 2015 study, 100 volunteers were split into two groups: one which wrote about a previous failure, while the other wrote about a recent movie they'd seen. both groups then took a 30-minute test to assess the effect on performance.

"The effects on performance are pretty strong," she shares. Participants who "didn't write about failures displayed twice as many errors (during the test) as those who did." In both studies, it was also discovered that participants "who wrote about past failures (made) slower, more deliberate choices over time."

It's certainly an illuminating study and DiMenichi plans to further discern whether it's the act of writing itself that's key or the reflection behind it that is. It's a study that's still in the works, although she suspects it's the latter.

Now, who would've thought that a quick 10-minutes of indulging a past failure would be so helpful? Next question: does this also apply to wallow on the couch reliving memories after a breakup... (We kid, of course.)

Sarah Khan

Photo: Getty Images

Read More:

Breaking Glass Ceilings: 5 Insights from Sue Kyung Lee, P&G Korea’s first female CEO

9 Therapeutic house plants proven to boost health, happiness & brain power

‘Placebo Sleep’: Can believing you’ve slept well boost your focus?

The post This unlikely 10-minute trick is key to being productive & excelling at work appeared first on Marie France Asia, women's magazine.

You can’t sleep, you can’t eat, and all you want to do is to cry and somehow see that person one more time to fix things. In fact, MRI studies have proven that heartbreak activates the exact same triggers in the brain that start is activated when addicts are withdrawing from Class A drugs like cocaine and opioids!

And while it is tempting to engage in rather reckless, spontaneous activities while you are in pain, it is very important that you make sure your health (both physical and mental) come first, no matter what. These are 5 healthy, science-backed ways to move on from heartbreak!

Burn all social media bridges

According to research done by Psychology Today, the more frequently you contact an ex, the less satisfied you will be with your current or future relationships. This is because greater longing for an ex is associated with decreases in satisfaction with your current partner over time, and decreases in satisfaction over time are associated with increases in longing for an ex.

Social media is a double-edged sword - you get to brag about your “bae” and be #couplegoals when you’re happily together with your S/O, but everything backfires when things end and you’re awkwardly left with a bunch of photos and posts that you never want to look at again. At the same time, it can also be tempting to post passive aggressive quotes or photos of you looking cozy with your Tinder date right after your heartbreak. But as long as you’re doing that, no matter how hot or happy you look, you’re never going to get over your heartbreak. So take that phone and delete everything... photos, his number, that sappy Spotify playlist, everything that connects you and him. It’s not as bad as everybody says it is. After all, if you end up becoming friends with him again somewhere down the line, all you need to do is add him again.

Eat well and exercise

Heartbreak affects not only your mind and mental health, but physical health as well, and in turn, your physical health also greatly affects your mental health. It might be tempting to surround yourself with junk food while you cry on your bed, or alternatively, eat nothing at all, but that just hurts you, your body, and your mind.

We all know that we often feel refreshed after we work out because our brain releases special "happiness" chemicals called endorphins. And after a heartbreak, you need endorphins to cheer you up naturally more than ever. Moreover, exercise will get you out of the house, keep you engaged, and may even bring about new opportunities and people in your life. As for eating clean, try to stay balanced. Don’t try to do anything too extreme like suddenly go on a 30-day juice cleanse or eat greasy takeout food every day. Go eat out at all the restaurants and bars he didn’t want to go to, but also make sure that you’re staying nutritious and healthy by experimenting in the kitchen a little bit! Don’t forget...you are what you eat!

Reach out to friends and family

You need a strong support system now more than ever. According to psychology coaches, connection and support through friends, family, and therapy are all extremely beneficial for healthy healing, and simply being around other people helps with your mental health. You might be afraid (or even a little guilty) about reaching out to the friends you had abandoned while you were in your relationship, but if they truly are your friends, they will welcome you back with open arms. Clearly articulating about your heartbreak will not only help you come to terms with what happened, but opening up a conversation about it will invite different, invaluable perspectives from your loved ones (“I think you could have done this better…” “I think you should move on like this…”) Try to avoid making the conversations an echo chamber of negativity though, and once you’ve talked everything through, move on to a next (hopefully happier!) topic.

Cry, rage, laugh... just feel your emotions as they come

Crying after a breakup sucks, even though we all do it. But surprise surprise! Crying actually leads to more positive feelings afterwards, as it stimulates our parasympathetic nervous system (PNS) and lets us relax and recover. Crying is also thought to trigger the release of natural opioids like oxytocin and endogenous opioids (similar to when we exercise!).

So don’t try to act tough and pretend that you’re ok (save that for when you run into him unexpectedly). If you’re sad, cry. Even though you might feel pathetic while you’re sobbing over a carton of ice cream, it will shorten your misery in the long run. Eventually your erratic mood swings will begin to stabilize and that’s when you’ll know...you’re over him.

Think of it this way: you don’t pretend to be okay and hold in a sneeze when you have the flu, right? Our mental health should be treated the same as our physical health; don’t be afraid to let go.

Lastly, focus on yourself and yourself only

What matters now is how you are doing and how you are trying to get better every single day. As much as it seems like it, getting over a breakup is NOT a competition. Sure, he might be going clubbing every night or might even be in a new relationship weeks after your breakup. But none of that matters to you anymore. A heartbreak is actually a great opportunity to start focusing on yourself and how you can become a better person. Whether it be through meditation, psychological counseling, or just staring off into space, contemplate about yourself and make your life and what you do about all about you!

Kanako Sugawara

Photo: Getty Images

READ MORE:

Breaking up: Dumped without warning

Lovers Shirts: Would you keep the t-shirt of you ex?

Friendship: How to overcome a painful breakup?

The post According to Psychology: 5 Healthy, science-backed ways to deal with heartbreak appeared first on Marie France Asia, women's magazine.

Turquoise blue waters, white sandy beaches and a dreamy backdrop of whitewashed houses with blue doors — the charm of Greece can certainly knock anyone off their feet. And complementing their breezy vibes is, no doubt, their food.

Greek food is all about fresh ingredients bursting with flavours. While we may not be able to experience Mediterranean food in against the spectacular backdrop of Mykonos or Santorini, but we can still have a taste of paradise in tropical Singapore.

Lucky for us, Singapore has a host of Greek restaurants that offer traditional Mediterranean grub that includes everything from Tzatziki to Moussaka. Now, they may not be able to fully replicate the whimsical landscapes of Greece, but make no mistake: their food will definitely make up for it.

Shona Menon

READ MORE:

Pita, Hummus & Falafel: 7 Best Mediterranean restaurants in Singapore

Unique Trips: 10 Dreamy European islands for unusual getaways

A solo female traveller's guide to Istanbul, Turkey's cultural city

The post Greek Food: 5 Restaurants in Singapore for a delicious taste of the Mediterranean appeared first on Marie France Asia, women's magazine.

As P&G Korea's first female CEO in its 24-year history, Sue Kyung Lee has definitely shattered a few glass ceilings for women in leadership positions. She shares her thoughts on how workplaces can be more supportive to women, her experience as a female CEO, and career advice she lives by.

Needless to say, this was no small feat, given South Korea’s patriarchal social fabric.

Today, as the Vice President - Global Safeguard and Asia Pacific Skin & Personal Care, she spearheads P&G's #WeeSeeEqual movement in APAC.

#WeeSeeEqual is P&G's commitment to driving gender equality within and beyond the organization. You've probably chanced upon their commendable advertisements that make bold statements breaking female stereotypes: like SK-II’s #ChangeDestiny or OLAY’s #FearlessAtAnyAge instead.

A few of their policies introduced to boost gender equality at work include flexible working schemes, career sponsorship programmes, and a 14-week mandatory maternity leave across all their countries in APAC, among others. And its efforts are certainly coming to fruition.

Get this: today, P&G has a 50:50 gender representation in their managerial positions within the Asia-Pacific region. They're clearly doing something right, considering how women are still drastically underrepresented in boards and senior positions globally. (Only 1 in 8 positions in leadership boards are held by women in Singapore, for one.)

It's safe to say that the fight for female representation might be the defining social conversation of 2018. And according to Lee, P&G wants to “set the tone” in their pursuit of gender equality for others in the industry to follow suit.

Considering how Lee has walked the talk of fighting against gender biases and her own personal dilemma of choosing between career or family, the campaign couldn't have a better leader at its head.

I had the pleasure of chatting with the delightful Sue Kyung Lee to pick her brains on being a female leader in a male-dominated world, how the workplace should support women, advice she lives by, and more.

"Be Yourself": Finding her footing as a female leader in a male-dominated world

While she admits that she never felt that being a female leader within P&G was a barrier, she concedes she has experienced her fair share of gender biases from other male industry leaders.

The industry forums she attended typically had the standard demographic: "male CEOs aged between their 40s to 60s, who felt uncomfortable accepting (her) as an equal at the beginning."

A female CEO was clearly a foreign concept - especially more so for one who doesn't fit "the stereotype on how female leaders should look", she says. (To give you an idea of how alien the idea is, she's been mistaken as an interpreter or assistant to her male subordinates.) After all, while she observed that women in leadership positions often sported more masculine attire and hairstyles, she doesn't subscribe to it.

Being seen as an equal didn't come overnight for her; if anything, she had to fight for it through time and patience. "The moment they saw a specific contribution or experience they could value, (their attitudes) changed. It meant I had to be more patient at the beginning and find that sweet spot and area of interest I could contribute to."

Her advice to other women is to not give up and stay true to themselves. "Keep looking for a proactive way forward. Keep asking yourself, "how can I get recognised?" Be patient and don't give up. I think there is unspoken pressure in situations to be somebody else. Don't lose yourself -- even if you feel the pressure to."

Overcoming Imposter Syndrome: What are "Appropriate Aspirations" For Women?

The idea of "imposter syndrome" has been the subject of hot discussion, with women reportedly being more likely to experience that feeling of inadequacy - something Lee is also no stranger to.

It's a situation that many women can attest to in varying degrees; Facebook CEO Sheryl Sandberg shares a similar experience in her book, Lean In. (Incidentally, Lee does follow Sheryl's advice about "leaning in".)

"My biggest challenge (initially) was myself and feeling confident that I could do it. I had to wrestle with my self-doubt," she shares. In fact, the thought of becoming the CEO of P&G didn't even cross her mind as an attainable reality - until a conversation she had with her then manager changed things for her.

"He asked me about my aspirations. I was very young at that time, and I thought: What would be the appropriate aspiration that I could share that would not make me look, you know, too ambitious?"

"So I said: 'the director?' He looked at me and asked me: why do you only aspire to be the director? Why not the head of P&G Korea?' And frankly, I never asked that question to myself. And it got me thinking: why? And, why not?"

This shifted things in perspective for her, and from then on she began approaching situations at work critically - as she would if she were the leader. Which, as we know, she ultimately became.

Perhaps it is this wisdom of just having someone to challenge you to aspire higher that inspired their career sponsorship programmes, which connects female employees to senior leaders as mentors to help them have successful careers.

The importance of creating an open, supportive culture at work

It's not enough for women to simply aspire higher - if they're not complemented with policies that support them at work.

Lee stresses that companies should also design initiatives that support women at work. P&G, for one, has a flexible working scheme, which allows for people who are struggling to care for their family (particularly young children and their aging parents) the option of more flexible hours. Additionally, they've implemented a mandatory 14-week maternity leave across all their countries in APAC (which is above most of the national maternity leave offered).

She also highlights the importance of the manager in creating a supportive workplace for women. "We want to create a culture of open conversation where female employees could express their challenges and concerns to seek help from their seniors. P&G recognises this too, which is why they've initiated manager's training programmes to groom their managers to be able to create an environment that feels supportive to their female colleagues.

Lee notes that although the managerial roles at P&G boast of a 50% female representation, the numbers drop to somewhere between 30 to 40% for senior roles. This is their goal for 2020: to ensure a higher female representation in these positions, by "developing sufficient pipelines" to make sure they "retain their top female talents to be groomed for top senior leadership positions."

How social norms make it hard for women to stay in their careers

Beyond the workplace, she acknowledges that there are cultural factors at play. To Lee, the stark lack of women in senior positions also stems from cultural norms. She hypothesises that the transition to senior executive positions also coincides with a life stage where women are faced with more changes in their personal lives.

It's also become the inevitable working mother's dilemma: choosing between family or career - something she also relates to. "I was just promoted to Marketing Director when my husband was offered a great job opportunity in the US. I had all these exciting ambitions for my career which I had to give up." Thankfully, she didn't have to. When she informed P&G of her decision to resign then, they offered her a unique role in the States that allowed her to work remotely.

When asked about Singapore's lack of female representation in senior positions, she also says that culture has a part to play. In Asian countries, the caretakers are traditionally women - which makes it challenging for women to continue progressing in their career. For new moms, the lack of adequate childcare support (e.g. subsidised childcare) in countries like Japan and South Korea also make it hard to encourage women to stay at work.

In fact, she joked how her entire paycheck went to the nanny when her son was still young. "And think about it: I was relatively well-paid, so you can imagine how tough it would be on other women, especially younger working women in Korea (to work and raise kids)."

Lastly, is work-life balance a myth?

Striking that work-life balance seems to be the elusive goal for us working individuals - so, with all the multiple hats she wears, how does Lee unwind? "A lot," she says.

She loves traveling (which she does with her husband, and on her business trips which she would sometimes extend), music and art. But equally important, she enjoys her work.

"It's intense and tiring, but I know that I'm needed, that I'm learning, and that I'm developing myself. (Work-life balance) is not dictated by working hours or intensity, but rather it's dictated by what makes you happy. For me, it's important that I'm happy with my work and happy with my life."

"My life mantra is to live today as if there's no tomorrow. I believe in doing what's most important to be done day to day, what makes me happy, and live without regrets."

And what would be her advice to working women? "Something I tell younger women is this: life is full of choices. You can choose to be a working mom, or a full-time housewife, for one. But once you've made the choice of pursuing your career, don't look back. Don't question your choice over and over again - stick to it and make it work for you."

Sarah Khan

Read More:

Interview: Meet the woman behind all-natural skincare brand Estelle & Thild

Interview: Meet Oon Shu An, the actress making international waves

Having conquered Everest, they’re now training to be the first Southeast Asian women to summit K2

The post Breaking Glass Ceilings: 5 Insights from Sue Kyung Lee, P&G Korea’s first female CEO appeared first on Marie France Asia, women's magazine.

Instead, they're making their comeback as a medical relief.

Traditional Chinese Medicine has been around for centuries and their results don’t disappoint. An ancient form of healing, acupuncture has been proven to not only cure physical pains such as backaches and headaches, it has also been discovered to help with other health conditions like mental disorders.

With anxiety disorder being the most common mental illness, finding a relief through counseling and oral medication is a common solution. But with natural remedies gaining popularity, more patients have turned to acupuncture for relief.

WHAT IS IT?

Acupuncture is the process of inserting fine needles at specific acupoints on the body to regulate the flow of the body’s vital energy, also known as qi. Qi flows throughout your body and when factors like stress or poor nutrition disrupt it, inserting needles at specific acupuncture points on your body can regulate the flow and restore the balance of qi in your body.

HOW CAN IT HELP ANXIETY?

As each person is unique, the treatment will differ for everyone. Your acupuncturist will first ask you a list of questions ranging from your medical history to your diet. Using your answers, the acupuncture treatment will then be specifically diagnosed according to your condition.

As each needle is inserted a millimeter away from a nerve, this can cause a chemical reaction where your body produces painkilling chemicals to heal itself and target the part of the brain that controls emotions, thus relieving anxiety.

ARE THERE ANY RISKS?

While some have reported an immediate improvement in their anxiety after one treatment and others experienced gradual relief, acupuncture will definitely not make your anxiety worse. Acupuncture has been proven to be an effective yet low-risk treatment and may just be the perfect natural solution to relieve your anxiety.

Shona Menon

Photo: Getty Images

READ MORE:

Fertility Talk: Can acupuncture boost your chances of pregnancy?

Pins & Needles: 5 Health benefits of acupuncture

Alternative Medicine: Acupuncture reduced tinnitus

The post Natural Relief: Can acupuncture help your anxiety? appeared first on Marie France Asia, women's magazine.

(We can vouch for this.)

Which is unsurprising that beauty brands have jumped on the bandwagon and whipped up skincare formulas infused with the purported health benefits of these fragrant oils.

Essential oils are, essentially, concentrated essences of a plant, according to the Los Angeles Times. And contrary to what you might think, the "essential" part of its name stems from the essence - not the fact that it's actually essential to your life and sustenance.

However, while its aromatherapeutic benefits are numerous, the same cannot be said for its benefits when applied topically on your skin. According to the Mayo Clinic, "side effects (of essential oils) may include allergic reactions, skin irritation, and sun sensitivity. The gravity of its effects varies from oil to oil, and how each individual use it.

Paula's Choice actually identifies essential oils as a major skin irritant to avoid. In fact, citrusy oils like bergamot, lemon, lime, and orange can cause phototoxicity (i.e. skin cancer or severe burns) on the skin, particularly when exposed to the sun after application, according to a study by the University of Minnesota.

That is not to say the beauty universe should start demonising essential oils. After all, oils like lavender scents are arguably every urban dweller's quick fix to a sound sleep at night. Just be sure not to slather your face with it and rest assured, your visage will be happy and irritant-free!

Sarah Khan

Read More:

9 Therapeutic house plants proven to boost health, happiness & brain power

This is the happiest stage in your marriage, new study discovers

‘Placebo Sleep’: Can believing you’ve slept well boost your focus?

The post Yay or Nay: Are essential oils actually healthy for your skin? appeared first on Marie France Asia, women's magazine.
