As P&G Korea's first female CEO in its 24-year history, Sue Kyung Lee has definitely shattered a few glass ceilings for women in leadership positions. She shares her thoughts on how workplaces can be more supportive to women, her experience as a female CEO, and career advice she lives by.

Needless to say, this was no small feat, given South Korea’s patriarchal social fabric.

Today, as the Vice President - Global Safeguard and Asia Pacific Skin & Personal Care, she spearheads P&G's #WeeSeeEqual movement in APAC.

#WeeSeeEqual is P&G's commitment to driving gender equality within and beyond the organization. You've probably chanced upon their commendable advertisements that make bold statements breaking female stereotypes: like SK-II’s #ChangeDestiny or OLAY’s #FearlessAtAnyAge instead.

A few of their policies introduced to boost gender equality at work include flexible working schemes, career sponsorship programmes, and a 14-week mandatory maternity leave across all their countries in APAC, among others. And its efforts are certainly coming to fruition.

Get this: today, P&G has a 50:50 gender representation in their managerial positions within the Asia-Pacific region. They're clearly doing something right, considering how women are still drastically underrepresented in boards and senior positions globally. (Only 1 in 8 positions in leadership boards are held by women in Singapore, for one.)

It's safe to say that the fight for female representation might be the defining social conversation of 2018. And according to Lee, P&G wants to “set the tone” in their pursuit of gender equality for others in the industry to follow suit.

Considering how Lee has walked the talk of fighting against gender biases and her own personal dilemma of choosing between career or family, the campaign couldn't have a better leader at its head.

I had the pleasure of chatting with the delightful Sue Kyung Lee to pick her brains on being a female leader in a male-dominated world, how the workplace should support women, advice she lives by, and more.

"Be Yourself": Finding her footing as a female leader in a male-dominated world

While she admits that she never felt that being a female leader within P&G was a barrier, she concedes she has experienced her fair share of gender biases from other male industry leaders.

The industry forums she attended typically had the standard demographic: "male CEOs aged between their 40s to 60s, who felt uncomfortable accepting (her) as an equal at the beginning."

A female CEO was clearly a foreign concept - especially more so for one who doesn't fit "the stereotype on how female leaders should look", she says. (To give you an idea of how alien the idea is, she's been mistaken as an interpreter or assistant to her male subordinates.) After all, while she observed that women in leadership positions often sported more masculine attire and hairstyles, she doesn't subscribe to it.

Being seen as an equal didn't come overnight for her; if anything, she had to fight for it through time and patience. "The moment they saw a specific contribution or experience they could value, (their attitudes) changed. It meant I had to be more patient at the beginning and find that sweet spot and area of interest I could contribute to."

Her advice to other women is to not give up and stay true to themselves. "Keep looking for a proactive way forward. Keep asking yourself, "how can I get recognised?" Be patient and don't give up. I think there is unspoken pressure in situations to be somebody else. Don't lose yourself -- even if you feel the pressure to."

Overcoming Imposter Syndrome: What are "Appropriate Aspirations" For Women?

The idea of "imposter syndrome" has been the subject of hot discussion, with women reportedly being more likely to experience that feeling of inadequacy - something Lee is also no stranger to.

It's a situation that many women can attest to in varying degrees; Facebook CEO Sheryl Sandberg shares a similar experience in her book, Lean In. (Incidentally, Lee does follow Sheryl's advice about "leaning in".)

"My biggest challenge (initially) was myself and feeling confident that I could do it. I had to wrestle with my self-doubt," she shares. In fact, the thought of becoming the CEO of P&G didn't even cross her mind as an attainable reality - until a conversation she had with her then manager changed things for her.

"He asked me about my aspirations. I was very young at that time, and I thought: What would be the appropriate aspiration that I could share that would not make me look, you know, too ambitious?"

"So I said: 'the director?' He looked at me and asked me: why do you only aspire to be the director? Why not the head of P&G Korea?' And frankly, I never asked that question to myself. And it got me thinking: why? And, why not?"

This shifted things in perspective for her, and from then on she began approaching situations at work critically - as she would if she were the leader. Which, as we know, she ultimately became.

Perhaps it is this wisdom of just having someone to challenge you to aspire higher that inspired their career sponsorship programmes, which connects female employees to senior leaders as mentors to help them have successful careers.

The importance of creating an open, supportive culture at work

It's not enough for women to simply aspire higher - if they're not complemented with policies that support them at work.

Lee stresses that companies should also design initiatives that support women at work. P&G, for one, has a flexible working scheme, which allows for people who are struggling to care for their family (particularly young children and their aging parents) the option of more flexible hours. Additionally, they've implemented a mandatory 14-week maternity leave across all their countries in APAC (which is above most of the national maternity leave offered).

She also highlights the importance of the manager in creating a supportive workplace for women. "We want to create a culture of open conversation where female employees could express their challenges and concerns to seek help from their seniors. P&G recognises this too, which is why they've initiated manager's training programmes to groom their managers to be able to create an environment that feels supportive to their female colleagues.

Lee notes that although the managerial roles at P&G boast of a 50% female representation, the numbers drop to somewhere between 30 to 40% for senior roles. This is their goal for 2020: to ensure a higher female representation in these positions, by "developing sufficient pipelines" to make sure they "retain their top female talents to be groomed for top senior leadership positions."

How social norms make it hard for women to stay in their careers

Beyond the workplace, she acknowledges that there are cultural factors at play. To Lee, the stark lack of women in senior positions also stems from cultural norms. She hypothesises that the transition to senior executive positions also coincides with a life stage where women are faced with more changes in their personal lives.

It's also become the inevitable working mother's dilemma: choosing between family or career - something she also relates to. "I was just promoted to Marketing Director when my husband was offered a great job opportunity in the US. I had all these exciting ambitions for my career which I had to give up." Thankfully, she didn't have to. When she informed P&G of her decision to resign then, they offered her a unique role in the States that allowed her to work remotely.

When asked about Singapore's lack of female representation in senior positions, she also says that culture has a part to play. In Asian countries, the caretakers are traditionally women - which makes it challenging for women to continue progressing in their career. For new moms, the lack of adequate childcare support (e.g. subsidised childcare) in countries like Japan and South Korea also make it hard to encourage women to stay at work.

In fact, she joked how her entire paycheck went to the nanny when her son was still young. "And think about it: I was relatively well-paid, so you can imagine how tough it would be on other women, especially younger working women in Korea (to work and raise kids)."

Lastly, is work-life balance a myth?

Striking that work-life balance seems to be the elusive goal for us working individuals - so, with all the multiple hats she wears, how does Lee unwind? "A lot," she says.

She loves traveling (which she does with her husband, and on her business trips which she would sometimes extend), music and art. But equally important, she enjoys her work.

"It's intense and tiring, but I know that I'm needed, that I'm learning, and that I'm developing myself. (Work-life balance) is not dictated by working hours or intensity, but rather it's dictated by what makes you happy. For me, it's important that I'm happy with my work and happy with my life."

"My life mantra is to live today as if there's no tomorrow. I believe in doing what's most important to be done day to day, what makes me happy, and live without regrets."

And what would be her advice to working women? "Something I tell younger women is this: life is full of choices. You can choose to be a working mom, or a full-time housewife, for one. But once you've made the choice of pursuing your career, don't look back. Don't question your choice over and over again - stick to it and make it work for you."

Sarah Khan

Read More:

Interview: Meet the woman behind all-natural skincare brand Estelle & Thild

Interview: Meet Oon Shu An, the actress making international waves

Having conquered Everest, they’re now training to be the first Southeast Asian women to summit K2

The post Breaking Glass Ceilings: 5 Insights from Sue Kyung Lee, P&G Korea’s first female CEO appeared first on Marie France Asia, women's magazine.

In the spirit of International Women's Day, we speak with Joanne Soo and Jane Lee of the Singapore Women Everest Team (SWET), who were part of the first all-female Singaporean team to summit the world's highest peak in 2009.

Having conquered the 8,848-metre Everest almost a decade ago, Jane and Joanne are now setting their sights on the notoriously challenging K2 mountain (often dubbed Pakistan's "Savage Mountain" for reasons you can imagine) - something they have not stopped training for since Everest.

At 8,611-metres tall, K2 is the second tallest mountain in the world following Everest, and is said to be far more technically difficult than the latter. Fewer than 30 women in the world have climbed K2 (in comparison to over 150 for Everest); an expedition that will take them a grueling 90 days to complete. And if they succeed, they will make history as the first Southeast Asian women to do so.

There's no denying that mountain-climbing still remains a visibly male-dominated sport, which is why it couldn't be more timely to celebrate these ladies for paving the way for more women to conquer the slopes and find out the peaks and pits of their climbing experience thus far - particularly as a female climber.

MFA: Having formed the Singapore Women’s Everest Team (Southeast Asia’s first all-women’s team) to summit Mount Everest, to say that your climbing resume is inspiring is an understatement. What has been your most memorable climb and why?

Joanne: Everest is definitely the most memorable but for another interesting reason - a group of men were tailing behind our female team hoping not to break trails. We were leading the way unintentionally, and other teams just followed behind us taking advantage of us clearing the path (despite being the underdogs)... I’ve never experienced that on any other expedition. Normally, other teams would keep to themselves to be competitive and carve their own way up. That incident showed me that the mountain does not care if you are a man or woman.

Jane: Probably Denali in Alaska. It was a really tough climb with atrocious weather. At one point, my climbing partner and I were blown over by a crazy gust of wind and literally pinned to the ground. The climbing was mentally and physically taxing, but it was also incredibly wild and beautiful.

MFA: In the same vein, what has been your most challenging climb?

Joanne: The challenge for me is not a particular mountain but more about fitness, lol. As I grow older, I realise I have to be patient and more disciplined with my fitness regime as it takes a lot more to achieve the level of fitness expected for an 8,000+ climb.

Jane: Definitely Everest. Aside from the fact that the climb was physically demanding, the fact that we were on the mountain for more than 2 months is mentally and emotionally draining as you’re constantly in a high risk and high-stress environment with little rest and a lot of expectations.

MFA: Describe what it feels like everytime you summit. What is your favourite part about it?

Joanne: I feel empowered and invincible. Like I can do anything.

Jane: The idea that we arrive at an amazing peak somewhere remote, based entirely on our own strength. There is something very powerful, romantic and satisfying about getting to the top of a mountain with your own two legs, in a day and age when we can fly across continents in hours.

MFA: You’re currently in the midst of preparing for your K2 expedition. Often touted as the most challenging and demanding of mountains to summit, how have you been getting ready for that?

Joanne: I have not stopped climbing since my summit on Mt Everest. Training for K2 will be a natural progression and I am ready to increase my training intensity and level up!

Jane: By firstly, ramping up the intensity of physical training which means going back to the tried and tested, rigorous training regime adopted for Everest; then engaging with fellow climbers around the world who have climbed K2 to learn from their experiences; and reading up on the history of past expeditions and generally getting excited!

MFA: What are some challenges and misconceptions that you or your fellow counterparts face as a female climber, if any?

Joanne: There are more female climbers now than 20 years ago, and women are elevating the standards of climbing here and globally. I think the misconception remains that being a female climber, you have to behave more masculine and keep your hair short and nails unpainted. Female climbers, just be who you are and wear what you’re comfortable with. The mountain does not care how you look.

Jane: That we are physically weaker, less technically skilled, more emotional and hence prone to irrational decision-making under stress. All of which I am happy to report, are completely false.

MFA: (to Jane) You're a consultant at a top-tier management firm. What’s your secret to committing to a full-time day job and your climbing demands? And how do you unwind in between it all?

Jane: Being incredibly disciplined with time management and keeping to a schedule; accepting that sometimes I have to make sacrifices (e.g. less social time and less sleep); and definitely getting used to a fast pace of life with little idle or down-time in between. I love water sports so I surf and kiteboard whenever I can - at least every other weekend. It's my stress reliever! I’m also passionate about my work, and during the week, I work really long (but fulfilling!) hours.

MFA: What is a life motto or philosophy you live by?

Joanne: Leave no man or woman behind.

Jane: If you’re equal parts scared and excited, you’re doing something right!

MFA: Some of your well-deserved accolades, Joanne, include being named one of the ‘Great Women of Our Time’ by Women’s Weekly and being inducted into the Singapore Women’s Hall of Fame. In light of International Women’s’ Day, who are some women you both personally look up to and why?

Joanne: Firstly, my late mum who was brave, strong, determined and trustworthy and she was good at planning for the future. Then there are a few local female celebrities that I look up to - Diana Ser, Michelle Chong, Aileen Tan, Kim Ng.

Jane: My best friend and fellow SWET member, Yi Hui. She has always been a beacon of resilience, strength and kindness, and is someone I try to emulate, especially in the steadfast and compassionate manner which she uses to deal with challenging situations in work and life.

MFA: We’ve come a long way in terms of fighting for gender equality and women’s rights globally - with much more to accomplish, however. What do you hope to see change for women in the next 50 years?

Joanne: That women will not be ‘punished’ for love, that any form of abuse and harassment will be unheard of instead of being the norm that we see everywhere – in relationships, at home, at work and even on expeditions.

Jane: In 50 years, I hope that gender equality is so entrenched to the extent that it becomes the norm, and we stop talking about it, or explicitly having to champion women’s rights!

MFA: What is your proudest achievement so far (climbing- and non- climbing-related)? And what do you hope to achieve next?

Joanne: An uncle that I’m close to, has mild autism and for many years he was very misunderstood in the family. I got the opportunity to read about autism and learnt to deal with his condition. I am now able to communicate with him better and have an improved relationship with him. I hope to dedicate time to volunteer on a regular basis with the autism resource centre.

Jane: That the Singapore Women’s Everest Team (SWET) are still the best buddies, after 15 years together!

Sarah Khan

Photos: Joanne Soo and Jane Lee

The post Having conquered Everest, they're now training to be the first Southeast Asian women to summit K2 appeared first on Marie France Asia, women's magazine.

Fathers all over India are posting endearing selfies with their daughters for a thoughtful initiative boosted by Indian PM, Narendra Modi.

When it comes to gender equality, India is not exactly the first country to come to mind. In a country where female feticide is still fairly rampant and women's rights are minimal, it's safe to say that there's a lot more the nation could do as a whole to rectify the worrisome imbalance.

Hence, as with any awareness causes these days, social media naturally takes a bold step forward here. And this time it comes in the form of Indian Prime Minister, Narendra Modi's endorsement of the initiative, #SelfieWithDaughter. The campaign seeks to encourage fathers in India to take a selfie with their daughters and post the image on social media with the accompanying hashtag. It was launched to back the 'Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao' (Save daughter, Educate daughter) campaign that aims to resolve the unequal gender ratio and improve access to education for women.

Ever since Modi made his call to take part in the initiative, the hashtag has been trending not only in India but worldwide as well as fathers in the US, Canada and Sweden have begun sharing their endearing shots with daughters.

While words and selfies can only do so much to trigger change, at least the motion has been set, the gears are running and hopefully with that some actionable programs will spring up to radically straighten out the chinks in societal issues.

For now, we'll go by one charming selfie at a time and see where the shots take us.

Tarandip Kaur

The post #SelfieWithDaughter: India's social media campaign to champion females appeared first on Marie France Asia, women's magazine.

In the 21st century, perceiving women according to their choice of clothing should not be an acceptable move.

Women are often judged by all kinds of artefacts. Case in point - many people would quickly categorise a woman as prudish, of easy virtue or licentious depending on the length of her skirt, the depth her neckline, or the height of her heels. However, as the saying goes, “Clothes do not make the man” nor the woman.

Theresa Wlokka, Frida Regeheim and other students at the Miami Ad School in Hamburg, Germany created an ad campaign for Terre des Femmes - a non-profit Swiss organisation campaigning for women’s rights, gender equality and feminism - to highlight the importance of not judging women by their appearance.

In other words, a woman’s worth should be measured by factors far more important than the length of their skirts, the height of their heels or the depth of their neckline. Thus, the German students conceptualised a powerful series of three ads that depict the chest, legs and feet of a faceless woman and a measuring scale that features words ranging from “whore” to “prude”, depending on what they're wearing.

These ads brilliantly point out how absurd, unfair and offensive it is to make misguided assumptions about women based solely on their clothing choices. Each ad features the tagline, “Don’t measure a woman’s worth by her clothes” and photographer Loli Maeght goes even further with “Don’t measure a woman at all: she’s unmeasurable.” Now that's powerful.

Lindsay POUI-DI

The post Should women be judged for what they're wearing? appeared first on Marie France Asia, women's magazine.

We love that Goldheart continually strives to ingrain their pieces with meaningful veins - for this collection, each gemstone carries with itself a different connotation that in turn reflect a woman's personality or traits. For instance, Agate (orange) is a gem of courage, strength, confidence and independence while Quartz reflects endurance.

Personally, I'm eyeing the Chalcedony (far left) for it's a sacred gem of quiet beauty and power and ask anyone but that truly defines me to a T. In essence, sometimes there's no need to go for big and bold jewellery when all you need is one focal point to harness all that is beautiful. Absolutely divine!

Where to buy it:

Goldheart Jewelry MODE Couleur ring collection (SGD638 each) is currently available at Goldheart boutiques.

Tarandip Kaur

The post Glorious Gems: Goldheart Jewelry MODE Couleur rings appeared first on Marie France Asia, women's magazine.

So beyond our mothers, the team at Marie France Asia has picked their one female figure who has inspired them in one point or another - from painters, activists to actresses and models.

Do tell us, who's your favourite female role model?

Rana - Editor-in-Chief

Frida Kahlo

"It's no secret that I admire the Mexican painter and activist - so much so that I had teary eyes the first time I saw one of her emotionally profound paintings at a museum in Buenos Aires. But I don't just admire her as an artist. To me, Frida is a great example on how a woman's many struggles and pain (both physical and emotional) can never crush her soul, or her will to enjoy life and still see its beauty despite the hardship.

She never aimed to preach or motivate, and no doubt she was flawed in many ways than one - but that's perhaps why I look up to her mostly. She accepted her flaws and by painting her reality managed to inspire me among many other women who found their strength in their weaknesses. Even when she could't walk anymore, her response was 'Feet, what do I need you for when I have wings to fly?' She did indeed have wings even if no one else saw them."

Tarandip - Fashion & Beauty Writer

Maya Angelou

"As one of the strongest activists for racial and gender equality, Maya held an exceptionally strong footing during the civil rights movement, fighting for everything that would change society for the better. And above all, her knack for writing and literature has pulled on all of my heart strings at one point or the other. If you need a book to read, I suggest picking up one of her 7 autobiographical fiction novels - as she likes to call them. "

Natasha - Editorial Intern

Marion Cotillard

"Marion Cotillard is one of the only actresses to win an Academy Award, Golden Globe, BAFTA and César awards. She can sing, she can act, she can model and the best thing is, she is a beauty with brains (She’s a spokesperson for Greenpeace!). Everytime she appears on the red carpet, she looks elegant in her faultless choices of gowns. In photo shoots, she is effervescent and super sexy no matter who the photographer or what the setting is."

Cheryl - Lifestyle & Beauty Writer

Fran Drescher

"My favourite female icon is definitely Fran Drescher. Apart from being an activist, an animal lover and a survivor of rape, cervical cancer and the breakdown of her marriage (where her husband eventually came out of the closet), she was The Nanny. Oh the amount of time I spent in front of the television/Youtube catching up on episodes of The Nanny. I loved her bright and daring outfits and of course that nasally: 'Oh Mr Sheffield....'"

Annabelle - Fashion & Beauty Writer

Anna Kendrick

"Apart from having such flawless features and the voice of an angel, Anna Kendrick’s happy-go-lucky personality, humour and quirkiness were undoubtedly the deciding factor as to why she’s my favourite female icon. If you aren’t already following her on twitter, you’re definitely missing out on a lot. There’s only one word to describe her tweets: epic. Seriously, is there any other celebrity who will publicly spazz over Katy Perry’s boobs on social media? I don’t think so."

Rebekah - Features Writer

Shailene Woodley

"Offbeat and down-to-earth, Shailene isn’t the kind of person one will immediately think of when talking about icons. It is precisely this quality that I love about her, that she is s good role model and continuously motivates her fans through her Twitter, but flies under the radar for the positivity that she’s spreading. The young star is honest about her no-frills lifestyle and that aligns with my personal motto of less is more."

Lindsay - Fashion Tech & Lifestyle Writer/ Translator

Anina Trepte

"At this point in time, Anina Trepte, also known as Anina.net is my role model! She is an international supermodel who then became a successful and brilliant entrepreneur, and is the first foreigner that has been given an award at the China Fashion Awards in December 2009. Besides that, she is an incredible and vibrant speaker!"

The post Staff Picks: Marie France Asia's favourite female icons appeared first on Marie France Asia, women's magazine.

Politics, sports and advertising, 2014 had its fair share of misogynistic phrases. Here's a roundup of those that should not repeat itself in the new year.

72% of women believe that feminism is still relevant. Judging by the number of sexist phrases that defined the year 2014 - you will find a selection in the slideshow above - one cannot help but agree. Especially so when these misogynistic words are often uttered by leading personalities - in the business, political and sports field. However, 2014 also gave rise to several initiatives to denounce this persistent misogyny such as France's online revolt website against sexism, Macholand or the #heforshe campaign spearheaded by actress Emma Watson after her famous speech on gender equality was delivered to the UN.

While women continue to make strides across all industries, this world will never progress if the other gender refuses to pine down on their antiquated remarks towards women. That's not to say that men are spared from the harsh brunt of sexism but they do face it less frequently and derogatively. Hence, moving into 2015, it'd be ideal to simply conscientiously consider one's choice of words.

Fabienne Broucaret and Tarandip Kaur

The post 10 Sexist phrases you do not want to hear in 2015 appeared first on Marie France Asia, women's magazine.

At 24, the young actress is certainly wasting no time. While a lot of her peers are known for their escapades and stints in rehab, Emma Watson has recently become a Goodwill Ambassador for U.N. Women. She was commissioned by the prestigious institution to promote gender equality by reminding the male counterparts of their duties as far as this cause is concerned. A cause that seems particularly touching for the Brown University alumna. In an impassioned speech this weekend, she rightly pointed out that men AND women should have equal rights and equal opportunities. A sentence which might sound a little too obvious, but still worth being emphasized.

In her speech she said "the more I've spoken about feminism, the more I have realized that fighting for women's rights has too often become synonymous with man-hating." With the HeForShe campaign she hopes that more men and boys will become advocates of change in terms of gender equality.

By launching this new challenge, she can probably count on some of her Hollywood colleagues as well, as we reveal the top 10 feminist celebrities who have been speaking out on the topic and supporting gender equality throughout their careers.

Grégoire PROVOST

The post Top 10 feminist celebrities appeared first on Marie France Asia, women's magazine.
