It works to stimulate skin rejuvenation through engaging the right receptors responsible for anti-inflammation and promoting healing, and also activating the pathway to boost your skin’s recovery and resilience.

Scientific jargon aside, it truly works within your deeper skin layers to repair damaged DNA at the cellular level - in short, fighting the signs of ageing right at its roots.

Being an enthusiastic dabbler of facials and all things new in beauty, I was keen to go give it a try - in the name and pursuit of healthy, glowing skin. Now available at SW1 clinic, the latest brainchild of renowned aesthetic doctor Dr. Low Chai Ling (who also previously helmed the Sloane Clinic), the PDRN Cellular Facial harnesses the benefits of PDRN to stimulate cellular regeneration and boost skin recovery to achieve that coveted glow.

Who is it for?

Chatting with the SW1 team prior to my facial, they shared that the PDRN Cellular Facial is targeted and designed for women in their mid-thirties and up - or basically anyone with visible signs of ageing looking to fight those signs.

Granted, considering I’m still in my mid-twenties, I don’t necessarily have any distinguishable wrinkles or fine lines (at least on the surface level, anyway). But I knew that my years of complacency with SPF and a healthy skin care routine must have left a mark on deeper dermis or cellular levels - and I was committed to repairing them!

The PDRN Facial Experience

The 9-step session starts with a deep cleansing to rid your skin of impurities and dead cells. But first, a cold, numbing cream is applied for 2 to 3 minutes. Once the numbing cream has set, the aesthetician exfoliated my skin with their in-house Gold Flakes Scrub to slough away any dead skin, allowing for better penetration of PDRN’s skin-loving benefits.

After exfoliation, the skin-healing molecules of PDRN is applied to the face with a derma roller (used only once for each client for hygiene reasons). What follows next is sonophoresis (or sound wave therapy), which is key in driving and infusing all the vital nutrients into your deeper dermis layers, as well as promoting a more lifted, youthful-looking skin.

Next, my skin was treated to both the White Plasma and Vitamin C powder which is touted to help brighten the skin. Following that, the ultra-luxe 24K Gold Mask, designed to fight the signs of ageing by reducing fine lines and wrinkles, was applied to my skin and left it looking firmer, smoother and more luminous. Lastly, a layer of moisturiser was applied to my skin, which the aesthetician will select depending on your skin type.

VERDICT

Now, I’m certainly no novice to the world of facials - I’ve tried many, loved some; been disappointed by some. While some facials leave your skin looking and feeling great immediately after the session, the benefits admittedly don’t last past the next day.

Not with this one, though. Not only did my skin look genuinely healthy and glowing post-treatment, I can genuinely vouch for how it’s truly rebooted my skin from within on a deeper level since.

Which is why when you’re looking for a great, non-invasive, effective and skin-boosting supercharge, the PDRN Cellular Facial Treatment at SW1 certainly comes highly recommended.

SWI Clinic is located at Paragon Shopping Center, 290 Orchard Road #13-01 to 06. The PDRN Cellular Facial Treatment (75 minutes) is now available at SW1 Clinic at SGD481.50.

Sarah Khan

Photo: Getty Images

READ MORE:

We tried a -15 degree Celsius cryotherapy facial – here’s what happened

10 Weird & exotic facial treatments that will definitely pique your interest

Facial Footnotes: 3 Signs your facial is not suitable for your skin

The post The Secret to Youthful Skin? And granted, it does make sense: after all, why dwell on the past when the productive thing to do is to look forward and channel your energy on new projects?

Interestingly, a recent study by researchers from Rutgers University, the University of Pennsylvania and Duke University might be flipping the script on what it takes to performing well in stressful, high-pressure situations.

According to the study, people who spent 10-minutes writing about a stressful moment they're experiencing actually performed better at tasks that required long-term consistency and persistence.

The logic? Pretty simple - this simple act of fleshing out your frustrations and feelings during difficult periods helps you avoid collapsing under pressure, and may build your resistance against future stressful situations.

It's certainly a departure from what we think and know about 'staying positive' in the face of challenges and failure. However, it turns out that allowing yourself to embrace your Debbie Downer every now and then is actually helpful to you in the long run.

In an interview with MIC, Brynne DiMenichi, a doctoral candidate from Rutgers University-Newark, likens it to doing pushups to build our strength. According to DiMenichi, writing about a stressful moment helps develop resilience in future stresses (much like a muscle), allowing us to perform better at crunch time. No doubt, it's a simple and brilliant trick that she recommends people to adopt, whether you're in the midst of intense project deadlines at work or preparing for a major examination.

“For a really long time we’ve been told to stay positive,” DiMenichi said. “But writing about a past failure changed the way that a participant responded physiologically to the possibility of a new failure.”

It's especially interesting that the authors had actually initially set out to prove the opposite. That writing about a prior success would lead to better performance - in the spirit of actualising a dream into reality if you will. In a similar 2015 study, 100 volunteers were split into two groups: one which wrote about a previous failure, while the other wrote about a recent movie they'd seen. both groups then took a 30-minute test to assess the effect on performance.

"The effects on performance are pretty strong," she shares. Participants who "didn't write about failures displayed twice as many errors (during the test) as those who did." In both studies, it was also discovered that participants "who wrote about past failures (made) slower, more deliberate choices over time."

It's certainly an illuminating study and DiMenichi plans to further discern whether it's the act of writing itself that's key or the reflection behind it that is. It's a study that's still in the works, although she suspects it's the latter.

Now, who would've thought that a quick 10-minutes of indulging a past failure would be so helpful? Next question: does this also apply to wallow on the couch reliving memories after a breakup... (We kid, of course.)

Sarah Khan

Photo: Getty Images

Read More:

Breaking Glass Ceilings: 5 Insights from Sue Kyung Lee, P&G Korea’s first female CEO

9 Therapeutic house plants proven to boost health, happiness & brain power

‘Placebo Sleep’: Can believing you’ve slept well boost your focus?

The post This unlikely 10-minute trick is key to being productive & excelling at work appeared first on Marie France Asia, women's magazine.

Here's some good news: the Melbourne International Comedy Festival, Australia's biggest comedy festival (and one of the world's largest) returns to Singapore this July. Happening between 19 and 21 July, there's a hilarious cast of international comedy talents from India, Sri Lanka, Australia and New Zealand.

There's Mumbai-bred Tamil star Rahul Subramanian, whose MBA credentials have somehow led him to the wild and unpredictable world of comedy; and Sri Lankan born Dilruk Jaysinha, who left his corporate life at one of the 'big four' firms for a career in standup.

Among this laughter-inducing cast is also the delightful Mel Buttle (who incidentally, also hosts The Great Australian Bake Off TV Show - the Australian edition of the wildly popular British programme).

Known for her hilarious sets, like Dog Bitch, which chronicles her hilarious episodes as a sometimes successful dog-owner, Mel shares her thoughts on being a female comedian in a traditionally male-dominated industry, as well as a few baking disasters she's suffered despite being the face of a world-renowned baking show.

It’s been 8 years since your debut at the Melbourne International Comedy Festival in 2010! How do you think you’ve evolved as a comedian from then till now?

Mel: I’ve definitely improved! I was so fresh when I did my first show. I didn’t really understand how to structure a show, now I see comedy as an art, I like to take audiences on a journey.

What first drew you to stand-up?

Mel: I was trying acting and I wasn’t getting anywhere. But casting directors would always laugh at my auditions - so, I went with comedy.

How do you approach crafting a new set? What gets your comic/stand-up juices flowing?

Mel: My ideas come from my life and family mostly. I get inspired when I’m grocery shopping or driving the car. I write them all down and try them at open mic nights.

Do you have a pre-stage routine?

Mel: I like a beer before I perform and some banter with my mates on the lineup.

What is your favourite or most memorable set you’ve ever done?

Mel: I’ve had some great gigs in outback Australia. Once I did a show in a high school basketball court to the whole town, all 400 of them turned up. It felt amazing bringing comedy to such a remote place. We even met the mayor!

Favourite set you’ve ever watched?

Mel: Oh so many; I think seeing UK comic Sarah Milligan live was something special. I’d been a fan for so long. She’s amazing. So quick.

Talk about being a female comedian, in what we know is a traditionally male-dominated world.

Mel: It’s getting a lot better actually. There are a lot more women coming through the ranks. It’s good to see. I always try and make them feel welcome.

Complete this sentence: ‘Female comedians are…’

.... Always hungry!

We’ve definitely been seeing a more diverse pool of female comedians from different backgrounds, ages, etc. (i.e. Tiffany Haddish) coming into the spotlight in recent years. Your thoughts?

Mel: It’s all good for comedy, audiences now have so much choice. It’s a really exciting time to be in the industry.

Who cracks you up on the daily?

Mel: My dog... she’s not very smart.

Who are your favourite comedians?

Mel: Ronny Chieng, Anne Edmonds and Sarah Silverman.

Favourite/guilty pleasure TV show to unwind with, if any?

Mel: I love reality tv! Masterchef is addictive and so is Catfish on MTV.

We also have to talk about The Great Australian Bake Off! How are your baking skills these days? Any baking disasters to share?

Mel: Well, I’m still not a great baker, but at least now I know what the proper name for things is. Like creme patisserie, which is delicious. I can’t make it, but I can sure eat it. I burn everything. I’ve given up on baking and now I just buy ice cream for dessert.

Lastly, what would your desert island dessert of choice be?

Mel: Oh, that’s a tough question, maybe a really good chocolate salted caramel brownie that never runs out?

Catch Australia's largest and best-loved comedy festival from 19 to 21 July at 8.30pm at the KC Art Centre, Home of SRT. Tickets are available from SGD69.

Unisex fragrances aren't exactly new. However, the latest addition to the universe of gender-neutral scents might come as a surprise.

Known for its iconic female perfumes like the Chanel No. 5, Chanel has expanded its fragrance line to include three new unisex fragrances called the Les Eaux des Chanel.

They're nothing like its predecessors. Designed by Chanel's in-house perfumer Olivier Polge, the scents are light, citrusy and encased in a minimalist bottle inspired by a flask - a far cry from the notes and aesthetic of the Chanel No. 5, for one. These refreshing notes are, in fact, typical of colognes.

Even its fragrance launch is different; unlike its earlier scents, there's no face attached to the launch. Instead, the beautifully-shot campaign is accompanied by a 3-part video series produced by Chanel, exploring the inspiration behind the scents.

Not created for any gender, the fragrances are each named after a significant destination in Coco Chanel's life: Venice, Biarritz, and the beach town of Deauville where she opened her very first boutique in 1913. There's Deauville (a fresh scent), Biarritz (the most cologne-like of the lot) and Venise (arguably the most traditionally feminine scent).

The Les Eaux scents are bright, light, and easy-to-wear - and remarkedly gender-neutral, despite its cologne notes in the Biarritz and the powdery scents in Venice. "There is something very elegant to their simplicity," he adds - a simplicity that extends to the bottles and packaging as well.

Polge acknowledges that the scents are a departure from what people have come to understand of the quintessential Chanel fragrance. In an interview with Elle UK, he shares, "We often have at Chanel scents that are quite rich. We are often working with a lot of flowers."

Still, it all stays true to the brand's heritage. "But there is something also always about freshness at Chanel. When we speak about No. 5, we speak about flowers and aldehydes. Many of our fragrances, like No. 19, is very green. But I felt there was room for these types of scents."

If you've always relished the smell of cologne (sometimes more so than female fragrances - we know we do), or have been sniffing out a his-and-her fragrance, well - this one's for you.

The Les Eaux des Chanel is exclusively available in Chanel boutiques from 1 June 2018 onwards and retails for SGD210 each (125ml).

Sarah Khan

Photos: Chanel

Read More:

New in Beauty: 7 Best new fragrance launches in 2018

Bite Beauty’s new line of lip glosses is inspired by your favourite coffee

From Fair to Deep: The 10 Most inclusive foundation lines

The post Chanel introduces three new gender-neutral fragrances inspired by travel appeared first on Marie France Asia, women's magazine.

Researchers haven't figured out why, although some studies suggest that it might be due to the fact that women react differently to nicotine, and more adversely to the carcinogens found in tobacco.

And this doesn't just apply to smokers. "Never-smokers", as they are referred to in the medical field, have also been discovered to be at greater risk.

A study by the National Cancer Centre Singapore (NCCS) found that the 3 in 10 lung cancer patients here are 'never-smokers', and the numbers are rising. In fact, despite never having smoked, more than half of 'never-smokers' seen at NCCS are typically diagnosed with advanced stages of lung cancer (i.e. Stage 3 or 4).

According to Dr. Ang Mei Kim, a consultant at NCCS, non-smoking women are more vulnerable to than non-smoking men. The numbers are staggering: 70% of 'never-smokers' diagnosed with lung cancer are women. This is also true in the UK, where a study of lung cancer patients found that one in 5 women who develop lung cancer have never smoked a cigarette, compared to one in 10 men.

Why? Researchers suggest that this disparity likely exists because of their exposure to second-hand smoke. Globally, men have statistically and historically smoked more than women, which means that the chance of a non-smoking woman having a smoking man as a partner is higher. According to the BBC, inhaling second-hand smoke makes it 20 to 30% more likely for someone to get lung cancer and is responsible for 430,o00 deaths each year - an astounding 64% of which are women.

NON-SMOKING ASIAN WOMEN ARE MORE LIKELY TO GET LUNG CANCER

It also appears that non-smoking Asian women are more vulnerable to lung cancer than their Western counterparts. "Less than 4% of Chinese women in Singapore smoke, yet, Singapore has a higher lung cancer rate among women compared to other countries like Germany and Italy, where one in five women smoke," shares Dr. Ang in an interview with Health Xchange Singapore.

It's certainly daunting news. Unfortunately, it's not as easy to define specific risk factors for most non-smoking lung cancer patients, according to Dr. Ang - although a few commonly-cited risk factors include exposure to second-hand smoke at home or at work, environmental pollutants, among others.

Non-smokers naturally tend to have a 'false sense of safety' about lung cancer, which can make it easy to overlook symptoms at an earlier stage. If anything, these recent findings point to the fact that even if you've never puffed on a cigarette in your life, it's important to be aware that lung cancer doesn't discriminate.

Sarah Khan

Photo: Getty Images

Read More:

Your favourite lip balms contain cancer-causing ingredients, according to new French study

Can the age you had your first alcoholic drink affect your risk of breast cancer?

The post New Study: Non-smoking Asian women are more at risk of lung cancer appeared first on Marie France Asia, women's magazine.

You might or might not have heard of 'baby quake' - the phenomenon where a couple's relationship starts to shift (and breakdown, in serious situations). If you're looking to rebuild the intimacy in your marriage, read on below.

This affects your relationship, and yes, the bedroom. If you're a parent, you've probably related to this.

As it turns out, first-time parents who have just welcomed their first baby are likely to be at risk of a "baby quake", which is said to shake up a couple's relationship and cause serious intimacy issues.

This "baby quake phenomenon" is real: research by Gottman Institute found that the "transition to parenthood brings a 67% decrease in relationship satisfaction for both men and women."

According to Erin Chen, relationship counselor and founder of SPARK Fest Asia, couples naturally devote so much attention to the birth process and development of their children and adjust their life accordingly, only to overlook the impact the change has on their romantic relationship.

If you're looking to reignite that spark and intimacy in your relationship, you're not alone. Erin, who has counseled numerous couples through similar situations, shares her tips on how you can rebuild your intimacy after kids in the gallery above.

However, she stresses that chasing after that spark might be misleading. "Remember that how sex or that "spark" looks is not fixed for life. Every relationship is different and sex looks different for every couple and through different life stages." Instead, she says it comes down to the "people in that relationship, their needs, expectations, and working through that when it comes to sex."

From re-learning everything you know about sex to addressing incompatible sexual needs, check out her 6 tips in the gallery above.

Sarah Khan

Photos: Getty Images

Read More:

Post-Baby Body: 6 Beauty tips celebrities swear by for removing stretch marks

Going Unda’: How your vagina changes in your 30s (and what to do about it!)

Could ‘going to bed angry’ actually be healthy for your relationship?

The post How to overcome 'baby quake' in your marriage, according to a relationship counselor appeared first on Marie France Asia, women's magazine.

Needless to say, this was no small feat, given South Korea’s patriarchal social fabric.

Today, as the Vice President - Global Safeguard and Asia Pacific Skin & Personal Care, she spearheads P&G's #WeeSeeEqual movement in APAC.

#WeeSeeEqual is P&G's commitment to driving gender equality within and beyond the organization. You've probably chanced upon their commendable advertisements that make bold statements breaking female stereotypes: like SK-II’s #ChangeDestiny or OLAY’s #FearlessAtAnyAge instead.

A few of their policies introduced to boost gender equality at work include flexible working schemes, career sponsorship programmes, and a 14-week mandatory maternity leave across all their countries in APAC, among others. And its efforts are certainly coming to fruition.

Get this: today, P&G has a 50:50 gender representation in their managerial positions within the Asia-Pacific region. They're clearly doing something right, considering how women are still drastically underrepresented in boards and senior positions globally. (Only 1 in 8 positions in leadership boards are held by women in Singapore, for one.)

It's safe to say that the fight for female representation might be the defining social conversation of 2018. And according to Lee, P&G wants to “set the tone” in their pursuit of gender equality for others in the industry to follow suit.

Considering how Lee has walked the talk of fighting against gender biases and her own personal dilemma of choosing between career or family, the campaign couldn't have a better leader at its head.

I had the pleasure of chatting with the delightful Sue Kyung Lee to pick her brains on being a female leader in a male-dominated world, how the workplace should support women, advice she lives by, and more.

"Be Yourself": Finding her footing as a female leader in a male-dominated world

While she admits that she never felt that being a female leader within P&G was a barrier, she concedes she has experienced her fair share of gender biases from other male industry leaders.

The industry forums she attended typically had the standard demographic: "male CEOs aged between their 40s to 60s, who felt uncomfortable accepting (her) as an equal at the beginning."

A female CEO was clearly a foreign concept - especially more so for one who doesn't fit "the stereotype on how female leaders should look", she says. (To give you an idea of how alien the idea is, she's been mistaken as an interpreter or assistant to her male subordinates.) After all, while she observed that women in leadership positions often sported more masculine attire and hairstyles, she doesn't subscribe to it.

Being seen as an equal didn't come overnight for her; if anything, she had to fight for it through time and patience. "The moment they saw a specific contribution or experience they could value, (their attitudes) changed. It meant I had to be more patient at the beginning and find that sweet spot and area of interest I could contribute to."

Her advice to other women is to not give up and stay true to themselves. "Keep looking for a proactive way forward. Keep asking yourself, "how can I get recognised?" Be patient and don't give up. I think there is unspoken pressure in situations to be somebody else. Don't lose yourself -- even if you feel the pressure to."

Overcoming Imposter Syndrome: What are "Appropriate Aspirations" For Women?

The idea of "imposter syndrome" has been the subject of hot discussion, with women reportedly being more likely to experience that feeling of inadequacy - something Lee is also no stranger to.

It's a situation that many women can attest to in varying degrees; Facebook CEO Sheryl Sandberg shares a similar experience in her book, Lean In. (Incidentally, Lee does follow Sheryl's advice about "leaning in".)

"My biggest challenge (initially) was myself and feeling confident that I could do it. I had to wrestle with my self-doubt," she shares. In fact, the thought of becoming the CEO of P&G didn't even cross her mind as an attainable reality - until a conversation she had with her then manager changed things for her.

"He asked me about my aspirations. I was very young at that time, and I thought: What would be the appropriate aspiration that I could share that would not make me look, you know, too ambitious?"

"So I said: 'the director?' He looked at me and asked me: why do you only aspire to be the director? Why not the head of P&G Korea?' And frankly, I never asked that question to myself. And it got me thinking: why? And, why not?"

This shifted things in perspective for her, and from then on she began approaching situations at work critically - as she would if she were the leader. Which, as we know, she ultimately became.

Perhaps it is this wisdom of just having someone to challenge you to aspire higher that inspired their career sponsorship programmes, which connects female employees to senior leaders as mentors to help them have successful careers.

The importance of creating an open, supportive culture at work

It's not enough for women to simply aspire higher - if they're not complemented with policies that support them at work.

Lee stresses that companies should also design initiatives that support women at work. P&G, for one, has a flexible working scheme, which allows for people who are struggling to care for their family (particularly young children and their aging parents) the option of more flexible hours. Additionally, they've implemented a mandatory 14-week maternity leave across all their countries in APAC (which is above most of the national maternity leave offered).

She also highlights the importance of the manager in creating a supportive workplace for women. "We want to create a culture of open conversation where female employees could express their challenges and concerns to seek help from their seniors. P&G recognises this too, which is why they've initiated manager's training programmes to groom their managers to be able to create an environment that feels supportive to their female colleagues.

Lee notes that although the managerial roles at P&G boast of a 50% female representation, the numbers drop to somewhere between 30 to 40% for senior roles. This is their goal for 2020: to ensure a higher female representation in these positions, by "developing sufficient pipelines" to make sure they "retain their top female talents to be groomed for top senior leadership positions."

How social norms make it hard for women to stay in their careers

Beyond the workplace, she acknowledges that there are cultural factors at play. To Lee, the stark lack of women in senior positions also stems from cultural norms. She hypothesises that the transition to senior executive positions also coincides with a life stage where women are faced with more changes in their personal lives.

It's also become the inevitable working mother's dilemma: choosing between family or career - something she also relates to. "I was just promoted to Marketing Director when my husband was offered a great job opportunity in the US. I had all these exciting ambitions for my career which I had to give up." Thankfully, she didn't have to. When she informed P&G of her decision to resign then, they offered her a unique role in the States that allowed her to work remotely.

When asked about Singapore's lack of female representation in senior positions, she also says that culture has a part to play. In Asian countries, the caretakers are traditionally women - which makes it challenging for women to continue progressing in their career. For new moms, the lack of adequate childcare support (e.g. subsidised childcare) in countries like Japan and South Korea also make it hard to encourage women to stay at work.

In fact, she joked how her entire paycheck went to the nanny when her son was still young. "And think about it: I was relatively well-paid, so you can imagine how tough it would be on other women, especially younger working women in Korea (to work and raise kids)."

Lastly, is work-life balance a myth?

Striking that work-life balance seems to be the elusive goal for us working individuals - so, with all the multiple hats she wears, how does Lee unwind? "A lot," she says.

She loves traveling (which she does with her husband, and on her business trips which she would sometimes extend), music and art. But equally important, she enjoys her work.

"It's intense and tiring, but I know that I'm needed, that I'm learning, and that I'm developing myself. (Work-life balance) is not dictated by working hours or intensity, but rather it's dictated by what makes you happy. For me, it's important that I'm happy with my work and happy with my life."

"My life mantra is to live today as if there's no tomorrow. I believe in doing what's most important to be done day to day, what makes me happy, and live without regrets."

And what would be her advice to working women? "Something I tell younger women is this: life is full of choices. You can choose to be a working mom, or a full-time housewife, for one. But once you've made the choice of pursuing your career, don't look back. Don't question your choice over and over again - stick to it and make it work for you."

Sarah Khan

Read More:

Interview: Meet the woman behind all-natural skincare brand Estelle & Thild

Interview: Meet Oon Shu An, the actress making international waves

Having conquered Everest, they’re now training to be the first Southeast Asian women to summit K2

The post Breaking Glass Ceilings: 5 Insights from Sue Kyung Lee, P&G Korea’s first female CEO appeared first on Marie France Asia, women's magazine.

It’s a concept that has yet to nestle into our mainstream consciousness and collective understanding – especially more so here n Asia.

It’s precisely this reason that drove TEDx speaker Erin Chen to launch SPARK Fest, Asia’s 1st sexual wellness festival. Co-founded with fellow founder Sinnead Lee, its entire premise is simple: to shine a light on what sexual wellness means, and how individuals can embrace it in a way that boosts their overall health and happiness.

The festival, held this weekend at co-working space The Hive, intends to spark healthy new conversations about sex, intimacy and love through a curated series of inspirational and informative talks, edutainment, art, and even a sex-tech panel.

So, What Exactly is Sexual Wellness?

“First, I want to emphasise that sex isn’t just intercourse or masturbation,” Erin shares. “It's related to our overall wellness, the quality of our relationships, how we feel in our skin, how connected we are with our sexuality – it is related to our emotional, physical and relational well-being.”

Over the course of her work in private practice as a sex & relationship counsellor, it became apparent to her that there was a genuine need for people to have better access to understanding and exploring sexual wellness – something her co-founder Sinnead Ali also attests to.

While there are similar events around (e.g. expos or conferences that approach sexuality from a product or medical perspective), she believed there was a gap in the market for a space that makes sexuality what it is: "fun and normal!".

Which is true. SPARK Fest will be the first multidisciplinary platform that brings together a holistic range of professionals, media personalities, and change-makers in sexual wellness.

The programme lineup is fascinating: it's teeming with talks that discuss everything from demystifying the female orgasm ("Breaking Down The Mystery of Female Orgasms"), discussing the evolution of the modern man ("A Look at The Evolution of the Modern Man"), weighing out cheating and monogamy in relationships, and so much more.

"Paying attention to our sexual wellness doesn't mean you have to talk about sex... or that you must have sex. It is that people understand what sexual wellness is and (its) relationship to your overall happiness and health."

And no, making sexual wellness a priority is not the same as being promiscuous, nor sexually active. To both Erin and Sinnead, the festival is "not about telling people how sex should be or not be." Nor does it mean you absolutely have to talk about sex or must have sex, Erin stresses.

Instead, it's about creating a space for them to "get accurate, diverse perspectives so that they can choose what will empower their own sexual wellness journeys." Everyone's understanding of their own sexuality is unique. "Not everyone feels sexual - some people are asexual. And so it's not so much that it is important for people to have sex, it is that people understand what sexual wellness is... and (its relation) to their overall happiness.

“The challenge has been to educate and create awareness on how it can be different from the way we are used to seeing sex portrayed in the media or porn.”

She acknowledges that viewing sexual wellness as part of overall wellness is a very new concept – much like how mindfulness was once upon a time a foreign idea to most. Because it’s so intrinsic to us as humans, it is important to be able to develop and engage in healthy conversations about it.

Needless to say, there are many myths, misconceptions, and unnecessary shame associated with sex, fed by portrayals through media platforms like movies, adult films, pornography, and more. This has in part contributed to inaccurate, or unhealthy, understanding of sex and our own sexuality.

This unhealthy and unwarranted negative associations of sex are harmful to relationships, overall well-being, and general quality of life, according to Erin. “The challenge has been to educate and create awareness on how it can be different from the way we are used to seeing sex portrayed in the media or porn.”

Ultimately, their vision has more to do with the long-term, bigger picture: for their children, and for future generations. “We are doing this for our future children. For them to grow up in a world where sex is not shrouded with shame and embarrassment, and where they feel free to make informed choices that give them fulfilling sexual experiences and relationships – however that looks like.”

SPARK Fest Asia, sponsored by STRIP - Ministry of Waxing, will be happening between May 18 to May 20 at The Hive, Lavender.
