Think \"Wellness Mama\u201d... you know the drill.\u00a0<\/p> <p>Interestingly, it was only just a generation ago that \u201cmom\u201d reigned supreme in the West. 'Mom' was seen as a far appealing alternative to \u2018mama\u2019 or \u2018mother\u2019; the former carried class signifiers associated with either fresh-off-the-boat immigrants or fancy and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mariefranceasia.com\/food\/hot-spots\/recommended-spots\/french-pastries-unique-twist-singapore-251708.html#item=1\">Frenchified <\/a>(depending on how you say it) whilst the latter felt antiquated and less intimate.<\/p> <p>So, why the switch?<\/p> <h2> <span>2017: In With \u2018Mama\u2019, Out with \u2018Mommy\u2019 <\/span> <\/h2> <p>According to Deborah Tannen, Ph.D. Professor of Linguistics at Georgetown University,<strong> \u2018mama\u2019<\/strong> sounds <strong>\u201cearthy and protective\u201d<\/strong>, <strong>\u201cstrong, authoritative, yet warm\u201d<\/strong>. On the other hand,\u00a0'mom' has somewhat evolved to become fraught with negative associations: 'soccer mom', 'alpha mom', 'Tiger mom', 'teen mom'. 'Mommy' in turn sounds too infantised.<\/p> <p>This turnaround in the popularity of using \u2018mama\u2019 in the West might surprise the bulk of us here in Asia. Mama is a traditional old-school maternal term in many Asian communities. One might even argue that the opposite is true in Asia: modern <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mariefranceasia.com\/culture\/entertainment\/asian-scene\/mummy-bloggers-sg-266884.html#item=1\">Asian mothers<\/a> typically shirk the traditional 'mama' for 'mom' or 'mommy'.<\/p> <p>While there are those that have pulled out the cultural appropriation card, perhaps the bigger picture is that transition back to \u2018mama\u2019 is symbolic of mothers seeking out authenticity and returning back to their roots. <\/p> <p>You might think it\u2019s all about the name, but really it\u2019s about how mothers are choosing to assert themselves and<a href=\"http:\/\/www.mariefranceasia.com\/galerie\/burnout-not-lose-motherhood-275445.html#item=1\"> define their identity <\/a>as a mother today in the 21st century.
