Street Chic: 10 Ways to wear ankle boots to elevate your style

Angela Goh https://www.mariefranceasia.com/id/author/angela 30 May 2017

These cutie booties can definitely hand you some serious style points, whether you plan on the “tough and grungy” look or the “sharp and slick” look.

#1: Black accessories
  • 1/10
    #1: Black accessories
Black boots + black bag + black hat? Check. A light and airy summer-style dress is all you need to complete the look!
  • 2/10
    #2: Buckles & studs
Planning to go a little OTT with tassels and colours in your outfit? Then a pair of OTT boots should be your go-to footwear. Ones with gold buckles and glittering diamantes or studs will do just the trick.
  • 3/10
    #3: Long trousers
Sure, cropped trousers will expose your boots a little more so they stand out, but loose-fitting long trousers with hemlines that aren't tucked into the tops of your boots can create a look that is just as chic.
  • 4/10
    #4: Peeking socks
Socks that peek out the top of your boots can look adorable when done right. Pick socks of the same shade as your footwear, unless you'd like to go the flamboyant route and pick socks that boast eye-catching prints. But leave that for when you're feeling like letting your inner child loose.
  • 5/10
    #5: Short shorts (or skirts)
If you're afraid your short skirt or pair of shorts would look a bit too casual for your daytime wear, boost the ensemble with a pair of fashionable boots and some chunky accessories to instantly add more style points to the outfit.
  • 6/10
    #6: Colours
We're loving the warm colour palette that fashion stylist Chloe Hill is rocking here. Auspicious golds and reds make this outfit ever so quirky.
  • 7/10
    #7: Prints
By keeping the rest of your ensemble fairly simple, you can rock a pair of boots that take on a more bizarre design.
  • 8/10
    #8: Cropped trousers
Model Roberta Pecoraro teaches us that cropped boots definitely go with cropped pants.
  • 9/10
    #9:Black + yellow
Channel your inner bumble bee and adopt the classic hues of black and yellow if you can't think of a colour to go with your simple black boots!
  • 10/10
    #10: Multiple colours
No need to stick to a single solid colour when it comes to your footwear. Why not try two? This combo is both head-turning and funky without being too OTT.

Style Guide: How to wear ankle boots

Pair them with jeans - Ankle boots were certainly made for the tough girl look, so a fitted pair of ripped jeans or cropped trousers matched with a pair of black booties will take your edgy style up a notch. Need to snare even more attention? Pick out boots with unique patterns or ones lined and studded in silver for the ultimate OTT footwear. Don't forget the leather jacket.

Pair them with a skirt - When the weather calls for something a little more comfortable than stifling denim jeans, a skirt will definitely deliver a more feminine twist while keeping you cool. No matter the length, ankle boots will look great with your skirt. If your boots have a high enough platform or heel, go for the maxi skirt.

Go monochromatic - For a look guaranteed to stand out, monochrome colours are all you need. Black skinny jeans cropped at the ankle, black leather ankle boots, a crisp white shirt, dark sunglasses… not only will this ensemble look incredibly put-together, it will also give you a fresh aesthetic that will never go out of style.

Play with unique designs - Gone are the days of block colour shoes. These days, it’s all about prints and embroidered patterns. From scrolling florals to coordinated colour schemes, keep your options open. Even the type of material could play a big part in elevating your look — try suede boots or perhaps even faux fur to keep things interesting.

Head up to the gallery to check out some great ways you can style your ankle boots with the rest of your outfit. You can never have too much inspiration!
