Wat Phra That Doi Suthep
Wat Phra That Doi Suthep is a pagoda located on the top of Mount Suthep overlooking Chiang Mai city. The pagoda provides a panoramic and commanding view from its peak. Doi Suthep is a highly revered pagoda, making it one of the most holy Buddhist sites in the country. Many Thais visit this pagoda during their pilgrimage - especially during the Buddhist holidays of Makha Bucha and Visakha Bucha.There are a few waterfalls that are accessible from the highway before going up to Doi Suthep. Mae Sa Falls, Huay Kaew Falls and Monthathan Falls are among the most popular ones. Huay Kaew Falls is the perfect place for a picnic before or after climbing the mountain to see the sights above.

Doi Pui
Those who enjoy trekking should pay a visit to Doi Pui that is a part of Doi Suthep-Pui National Park. Due to its high elevation, Doi Pui is covered in mist and has a relatively cool climate all year round. The evergreen forest is filled with lush flora and fauna. Many species of birds and small mammals inhabit the forests such as red jungle fowl, pheasants, eagles and wild boars. There is also a camping area that can accommodate up to 250 visitors.Within Doi Pui area, there is also the Hmong Tribal Village. The 4 km road up to the village is steep but well-paved. Tourists can head there to learn about the livelihood of Thailand’s ethnic hill-tribe. The villagers wear traditional Hmong clothes, sell traditional handicrafts and live in traditional style homes. Many tourists often combine their tour with a visit to Wat Phra That Doi Suthep that's nearby and then to Doi Pui.

Grand Canyon
The Grand Canyon Chiang Mai is not listed on travel sites and most locals are unfamiliar with the attraction. This manmade canyon is a must-visit despite the travel from the main city.The Grand Canyon is a derelict soil mine turned into a deep pond that has collected rainwater over the years.There are spots for daredevils to jump off from the 14-metre high cliff into the deep emerald water. Watch out for signs that forbid cliff diving from some spots due to surrounding rocks.

Wat Chedi Luang
Chiang Mai is overflowing with ancient and contemporary pagodas that are it's impossible to visit each and every one of them. Some of the pagodas date back as early as 13^th century, when the city was originally founded by King Mengrai.The survival of many pagodas is a testament to the skills of builders and works of artisans. The intricate carvings and hand painted murals inside the pagodas are absolutely stunning. These structures still form an important part in the lives of many Thai people who visit and give their offerings.

Women's Correctional Institution
Located in the heart of the old city, the Women’s Correctional Institution offers massages performed by female inmates. The programme is part of the prison’s job-training rehabilitation program. Fret not; you are not going to be massaged by a murderer. Most of the women in the prison are serving short sentences for minor crimes. Hence they are permitted to participate in such projects when they are nearing the end of their custodial sentences. Although the massages are not performed by experts, the quality of massages is good. There is also a café, restaurant and handicrafts shop next to the massage place. The inmates are taught cooking and English, along with massage skills. The programme aims to empower them with newfound skills to find employment after their release.

Located in northern Thailand, Chiang Mai is the second largest city in the country. In the last few years, the place has become a major pull for backpackers and tourists of all kinds. The city centre itself retains a ‘small town’ cosy feel with historical temples and attractions within walking distance of each other. Beyond the centre, you will find trekking adventures, hidden waterfalls and ethnic hill-tribes tucked away in the mountains.

Chiang Mai offers a laidback charm, in contrast to the madness of Bangkok. In fact, there is so much to see both in the main city and lush countryside that you will have to plan your trip well to fit them all in.

So before you get flustered, here are five places you absolutely have to see before leaving Chiang Mai.
