Dining No-Nos: This is why you should never pepper your food at restaurants

Here’s the exposé on those seemingly innocuous restaurant pepper shakers.

As you’ve probably heard by now, menus have been named as one of the most unhygienic and germ-laden objects in restaurants. With a multitude of greasy fingers thumbing through those menus on a regular basis, it is truly no surprise that it’s been cited as the dirtiest item in restaurants.

However, you might be surprised at what comes in second: pepper shakers. Yes – this seemingly innocuous object is a powerhouse for germs and bacteria, apparently.

More often than not, pepper shakers are only wiped down when visibly dirty. Containing a whopping bacteria count of 11,600, these table objects are rarely replaced, or sanitised.

If that hasn’t nauseated you yet, this will: pepper shakers can possibly be allergy hazards. Yes, you heard us right.  Shakers run the risk of being easily contaminated when one might accidentally drop it in their food.

If you consider yourself a pepper lover, we hate to break it to you, but it would be wise to lay off the pepper when dining out. After all, you’ve never known where it’s been.
