Beyond Blue: 10 Ways to modernise the denim skirt

Angela Goh https://www.mariefranceasia.com/hk/author/angela 18 Mar 2016 mis à jour le 3 May 2019 à 12:10

Here's how you can wear a denim skirt without looking like you're stuck in the 90s.

Layer up with a long cardigan
  • 1/10
Layer up with a long cardigan
Rock the denim skirt with a flowing cardigan and an o-neck top like Lily Donaldson at the 2015 Stella McCartney Fashion Show. Pick solid colours that are easy on the eyes.
  • 2/10
    Mix up your denim pieces
Blue, blue, blue. For the daring, try this denim on denim style. Make sure there is enough contrast between your top and skirt to give the illusion of a svelte hourglass figure.
  • 3/10
    Be colour conscious
Move away from the cliche light wash blue denim and opt for less typical colours. Selena Gomez looks great in a white collared blouse and dark hued zip-up skirt.
  • 4/10
    Try a pleated mini
A pleated skirt, if too long, can give you a stocky appearance. If going for pleats, pick shorter skirts. Pair with loud coloured tops to stand out in a crowd.
  • 5/10
    Dark denim for days
Darker shades of denim will always look good with light blouses and shirts. Accessorise with coloured boots and perhaps some dark sheer stockings.
  • 6/10
    Button up, beautiful
Actress Lou De Laage shows us how to style denim with buttons. The classic white top and black stockings look will never get old.
  • 7/10
    Plenty of prints
Sick of monotone colours? Go loud with a printed jacket and accessories to match and turn heads in an instant.
  • 8/10
    Vibrant outerwear works
For colder weather, pair up your denim with some bright and vibrant jackets and coats to make a statement.
  • 9/10
    Let your hair down
Letting your tresses loose can give your outfit a fun and flirty look. Accessorise to the nines with a large bag and some jewellery.
  • 10/10
    A longer skirt
Skirts that reach down to the knee will give off a more formal look to your emsemble. Combine the look with a black v-neck sweater for a simple yet elegant appearance.

Just like the pencil skirt, the denim skirt is a staple piece and you might have one or two hanging around in your closet. Reaching the pinnacle of hype in the 90s, denim skirts were favoured by plaid-wearing garage rock goddesses with a penchant for heavy eyeliner and combat boots. We're aiming to bring denim back with a contemporary bang.

Whether you love that classic indigo hue or the washed out look, one thing's for sure - the sturdy and durable cotton fabric is what makes the material worth wearing. Avoid that 90s grunge look with these contemporary styling techniques.

Tips on modernising the denim skirt

High-waist skirts are flattering and modern - Pair with a simple tucked in button-up or cropped tee
To keep it young, opt for colourful sneakers. This youthful look will quickly allow you to blend into the hip city crowd.

Go for a beachy look with blouses, sandals and accessories - Pick skirts that fall above the knee - don't be afraid to show some skin. Combine with a sleeveless blouse, strappy sandals and a wide brim hat for an instant summery vibe.

Mix washes, keep footwear simple - Mixing your blues can involve a bit of trial and error. Choose a chambray or denim top that is a shade lighter or darker than the skirt. This creates enough contrast to avoid overwhelming your look. Also, keep your shoes simple and chic.

Add a light cardigan for cooler days - Layering up with a cardigan can help you achieve a contemporary look. Accessorise with a pair of pointed leather boots and designer sunglasses to up your style factor.
