The Elements
While each of the 12 zodiac signs have their individual traits, the element group they belong to is the strongest determinant when it comes to compatibility with other signs. The 4 groups are:Fire (Aries, Leo, Sagittarius)Earth (Taurus, Virgo, Capricorn)Air (Gemini, Libra, Aquarius)Water (Cancer, Scorpio, Pisces)Generally speaking, signs within the same group are considered compatible. Outside their groups, Air is most compatible with Fire while Water and Earth go well together. Just like in real life really.

Qualities and Energy
Next comes the qualities. Divided into 3 groups, the qualities determine the sign's nature i.e. whether a person is an initiator by nature (cardinal signs), stubborn (fixed signs) or adjustable (mutable signs).The groups are:Cardinal signs: Aries, Cancer, Libra and Capricorn. These are born at the start of each season hence their pro-active nature, which initiates change.Fixed signs: Taurus, Leo, Scorpio and Aquarius. These are mainly stubborn, go-getters and know exactly what they want.Mutable signs: These are the most understanding and flexible of signs but that also means they can be indecisive and hard to read.Each sign also has an energy characterictic (masculine or feminine) which plays a small role in determining the nature of their relationship and compatibility.
