Back to Basics: The must-have undergarments for every wardrobe

Nur Syazana H. https://www.mariefranceasia.com/hk/author/nursyazana 12 Aug 2015 mis à jour le 3 May 2019 à 23:19

Positive that your granny panties will look good in a bodycon dress, a pencil skirt and even your favourite skinnies? Think again. We cover the ultimate wardrobe foundation you need for every outfit.

T-Shirt Bra
  • 1/7
    T-Shirt Bra
A point to note: never match the colour of your bra to the colour of your clothes if you intend it to be invisible. If you're going to be in a white or sheer T-Shirt, choose nude undergarments instead of white, which shows through even more than any colour. For casual cotton tops, go for 3/4 cups that won't create unsightly lines over the front of your shirts, and a satin-like material so the fabric of your clothes glide over it easily. Calvin Klein Underwear Icon Convertible Perfect push-up T-shirt bra, approx SGD72

    Seamless Boy Shorts
Jeans are almost everyone's staple casual bottoms, so a complimenting pair of underwear is essential to look best in your favourite skinnies or boot cut denim. Though thongs are a go-to for some, the uninitiated can opt for seamless boy shorts that lift the buttocks and are as comfortable as any granny panties you own. Visible panty lines no more.Heidi Klum Intimates Dreamtime stretch-lace briefs, approx SGD45
  • 3/7
    Shaping Bodysuit
Thinking of wearing a bodycon for girls' night? Fake a toned, full-bodied figure in a shaping bodysuit. Way more comfortable than a claustrophobic corset, it subtly but effectively slims down any love handles or belly pooch you might have to give you a Coke-bottle effect.Spanx Shaping bodysuit, approx SGD175
  • 4/7
    Strapless Bra
For bustier or strapless dresses, transparent bra straps are a no-go (when are they ever, really?). Instead, go for a strapless full or half-cup push-up bra to give your chest full support.Stella McCartney Smooth & Lace stretch-jersey and lace strapless bra, approx SGD93
  • 5/7
    Shaping Long Shorts
Unless you're svelte and extremely toned, you'll most likely need a little help looking trim in a fitted pencil skirt. The slimming silhouette is often worn at the office and can look chic at formal events and dinner parties. To keep all the extra bits in place and show your best figure, opt for a pair of firm-hold shaping shorts, which will allow plenty of movement under your clothes compared to its skirt-type variations.Spanx Skinny Britches Super Shaper shorts, approx SGD119
  • 6/7
    High-waist Seamless Briefs
High-waisted trousers are made for lengthening the legs and showing off a perky butt. Match your tailored pants with a pair of high-waisted full bottom briefs that will have people questioning if you're actually going commando underneath it all. It's 100% of the comfort with none of the nude commitment. La Perla Begonia lace-paneled stretch-tulle briefs, approx SGD80
  • 7/7
    Self-adhesive Bra
Don't ruin a statement back-detail dress or top with a distracting bra. Hold your girls well in place with a stick-on bra with attached wings (because you're a Victoria's Sceret angel in your own right, of course) to give you more support at the sides of your chest. You'll have the freedom to wear any daring top you own without any worry.Fashion Forms Go Bare Ultimate Boost self-adhesive backless strapless push-up bra, approx SGD54

Since underwear is just as important to us as the clothes we put on display, it's a wonder why most women don't pay attention to what undergarments are best for their body types, or the clothes they wear. The "As long as it's comfortable, go with it" ideal doesn't apply to every outfit you put on and can sometimes even bring down the entire look. Did you really mean to spend hundreds of dollars on your strapless gown just to ruin it with unsightly transparent bra straps? We didn't think so.

Make the most out of your clothes by complimenting them with a solid foundation of undergarments and lingerie that will serve their purpose for a myriad of outfits and occasions. Our gallery covers the best basics you never knew you needed in your wardrobe - from the casual T-Shirt to the smart pencil skirt and even a formal bodycon dress. And just like that, the rest is up to you - your most luxurious lingerie are meant to be displayed and won't need much clothing over them anyway!
