Sarah Khan https://www.mariefranceasia.com/hk/author/sarah 28 Sep 2016 mis à jour le 3 May 2019 à 09:10

Fresh, chic and utterly empowering - we show you how to wear this siren shade in 10 different, effortlessly wearable ways.

Red & denim for a casual, off-duty look

Red & denim for a casual, off-duty look
For that effortless, off-duty chic look, pairing a bold colour like red with the quintessentially casual staple of a denim skirt is a great way to rock the crimson shade without feeling over-dressed.
  • 2/10
    Red slip dress
In the spirit of this classically sensuous and romantic hue, a modern take on the sexy 90s slip dress is a great way to wear red. Wear it with strappy sandals in the day for a daytime, chic look or with heels to up the ante for the night.Fashion blogger Amelie Lloyd is wearing a Maison Lemoine red dress, and Balmain shoes.
  • 3/10
    A pop of cherry
We all have those days when we reach for that go-to, all-black outfit, only to realise we are sorely in need of a colour. For those types of days, simply reach for a red accessory, like this bright red Celine bag, to add a pop of colour and vibrancy to your classic black outfit.
  • 4/10
Red on red: The "power suit"
A red pantsuit is the perfect homage to this strong, empowering hue. Because of its classic lines and structured cut, the top-to-toe red on red combination becomes wearable.
  • 5/10
    Classic red and black
Black is a neutral that pairs perfectly with this bright hue. Edge the look up by mixing a feminine red dress or jumpsuit with a black biker jacket. The contrasting silhouette and colours make for a great and chic way to pull off rocking red any day.
  • 6/10
    Colourblocking: Red and bold shades
When mixing bold colors such as a deep red and bright yellow together, keep the lines simple - like a structured, tailored dress and a box bag, as seen on Monica Almada.
  • 7/10
    Flirty, romantic reds
As the universal hue of passion, romance and all things flirty, it is sometimes best to just surrender the sensuality of the colour and opt for a romantic, flirty dress as seen on fashion blogger Aimee Song.
  • 8/10
    Red jumpsuits
A simple, well-tailored jumpsuit is a chic, classic and modern interpretation of the colour that many might consider to be dated or loud. The contrasting elements of the soft, flowy neckline and the sleek cut on the pants in this particular red jumpsuit makes it a great option for various occasions.
  • 9/10
    Classic red and white
Like black, white is another classic neutral that seamless complements the brightness of the red. When mixing other coloured separates (not neutrals) however, keep the tones a bit more muted. Instead of a bright cherry red, opt for more of a more subtle burgundy hue.
  • 10/10
    Structured red blazer
A red structured blazer is another great way to wear this red. A classic, sleek all- black outfit is the perfect excuse to throw on that bright outerwear, as seen on Model Sara Sampaio at the 2016 Francesco Scognamiglio show.

As far as colours go, red is not a hue that women often gravitate towards, particularly on an everyday basis.  The universal colour of passion and sensuality, red can feel like an ostentatious, even dated, shade that many of us shy away from.

Call it blush, cherry, crimson or merlot, red is truly a chic, fresh and universally flattering shade that can make you feel empowered and score you major sartorial points when worn right. Whatever your skin tone, this is a shade that can beautifully contrast against pale skin and enliven tanned or deeper skin tones, and should be incorporated into your wardrobe all-year round.

So, here are 3 useful style tips and 10 ways to effortlessly infuse this bold and unapologetic colour into your work or weekend wardrobe, whether you're going for a subtle pop of colour or something entirely bold!

Keep Your Makeup Minimal

Because of the intensity of the shade, red is best paired with a muted, fresh-faced makeup look. Red lips are a great option, but keep the rest of the face minimal and go neutral on the eyes. The philosophy here is to simply let the red do the talking.

The Right Shade of Red?

There are many shades of red in the spectrum, some muted, others more vibrant. Discerning between a cool red (more blue pigment) and a warm red (more yellow) is key in deciding the right shade of red for you. Contrary to what many might think, your skin tone (i.e. whether you're fairer or deeper) does not determine which shade is more suited for you, rather, it has more to do with your skin's under tones (warm or cool). A quick tip to deciding if you look best in warm or cool shades? Consider which flatters you more: silver jewelry (opt for cool shades) or gold jewelry (opt for warm shades). If both flatters you, then experiment away with both warm and cool reds.

Wear It with Confidence

Red is a bold colour and no doubt eye-catching, so rock it with confidence! Do not let it wear you; it should empower you and make you feel invincible instead.
