50 Shades of Grey gets a Singaporean twist on Twitter

What does 50 Shades of Grey and Singapore have in common? A brilliant hashtag. Read on for how #SG50ShadesofGrey became the top trending topic on Twitter.

#SG50ShadesofGrey

No, there wasn't a Singaporean remake of the supposedly kinky novel-to-film adaptation, Fifty Shades of Grey but Twitter did have a field day with it as it exploded into a brilliant storm of double entendres and creative word play.

To cut the story short, what happened was the result of marrying Singapore's year-long celebratory jubilee hashtag, #SG50 with #50ShadesofGrey and the union gave birth to #SG50ShadesofGrey. Genius or genius? We can't decide.

While the hashtag could be traced back to local poet, Alvin Pang on 12 February, it sky-rocketed to epic proportions with nearly 69,000 tweets to date and BBC even picked it up as part of their #BBCtrending news. Hashtags overload anyone?

Sure, hilarious parodies of the R21 movie have emerged with legos and Disney princess and princes but this particular combination of suggestive language with subtle jabs to Singapore's daily city life sure does give Singaporeans the creative lead in the spoof department

From trains breakdowns to annual haze issues and expressway charges, by now the increasingly trending hashtag has injected an infectious humour in the air with harmless teasing. Now, who's to say that Singaporeans are incapable of witty banter?
