Valérie Guillard, author of Binging on Objects: Possession in our societies*:

"In my investigations, I discovered different psychological profiles, "savers" who have developed a bond so strongly to objects that they cannot be separated without the feeling of losing a part of themselves. Hoarding responds to a need for security and shows a form of anxiety.

There is thus the "emotional savers" that accumulate nostalgic pieces recalling their memories; the "instrumental savers" who raise "in case" items and that it reassures them; the "altruistic savers" that store for others. There are also "economic savers" keeping objects only because they have paid the price. All are usually procrastinators who have trouble making decisions."
