Met Gala 2015: Our best and worst dressed on the night

Rana Wehbe https://www.mariefranceasia.com/hk/author/rana 05 May 2015 mis à jour le 4 May 2019 à 01:19

See who topped and who flopped at the most glamorous red carpet event - the Met Gala - which celebrated China this year.

Rihanna
  • 1/20
    Rihanna
Big gown. Check. Bright colour. Check. Huge train. Check. Rihanna's choice of a dramatic Guo Pei creation didn't really surprise us given her past Met Gala appearances - and that pink tutu dress she recently wore at the Grammy Awards.Riri surely knows how to bring her A-game on every occasion and we salute her for that. After all, that's what this night is all about: Celebrating fashion as art.
  • 2/20
    Sarah Jessica Parker
All we can say is that SJP made her on-screen alter ego Carrie Bradshaw proud! We love the risk-taking actress who showed up in a custom H&M gown complete with a show-stopping headgear which as usual followed the night's theme.
  • 3/20
    Amal Clooney
The Human Rights lawyer and George Clooney's missus gave Hollywood (and New York) stars a run for their money by turning up in a custom Maison Martin Margiela (she was fitted by John Galliano himself) which was just the right mix of drama and elegance. Her accessory of choice? Of course, hubby George in a tux!
  • 4/20
    Kim Kardashian
Mrs West's apearance in a floral Givenchy number two years ago caused quite a stir that even the house's Creative Director Riccardo Tisci had to step in and defend his choice to dress her when she was heavily pregnant. While we love the sexy see-through Roberto Cavalli number on her, we've kinda seen the reality star in so many white gowns so far (yes, counting her many wedding dresses there too).
  • 5/20
    Beyonce
While Kim chose Cavalli for this year's appearance, it was Mrs Carter's turn to don one of Givenchy's gowns for the Met Gala. But if you ask us, it looks as if the designer didn't have time to finish sewing it judging by its naked sheerness.Britney Spears meets J Lo anyone?
  • 6/20
    Jennifer Lopez
Speaking of J Lo - the superstar showed up in what looks like a red version of both Kim and Beyonce's dresses. While no surprises there as far as her choice, we give her credit for reflecting the night's theme with this dragon-embellished Cavalli gown.
  • 7/20
    Lady Gaga
We are in love with the new Gaga whose dress sense is becoming more and more high fashion. Her choice of this grandeur Balenciaga creation is what we expect a star like her to wear for such an event. Go Gaga!
  • 8/20
    Zendaya
The Disney star behind the whole Fashion Police controversy didn't disappoint either with a quirky dress from designer Fausto Puglisi whose bold vision translates so well on the gorgeous Zendaya. Age-appropriate and fashion-forward, what else could we ask for?
  • 9/20
    Selena Gomez
Selena Gomez must have missed the memo on the night's theme as she went for Spanish inspiration instead of Chinese. The white Vera Wang dress looks good, however it's the headgear which is baffling us. We'd say it's a hybrid between a Swan Lake ballerina and an old maid.
  • 10/20
    Kerry Washington
When looking at Kerry Washington's photo, we couldn't help but have a flashback to Gwyneth Paltrow's pink Ralph Lauran number from the 1999 Oscars.
While we love her daring Prada bubblegum-hued frock, we're not too sure it needed more colour when it came to shoes.
  • 11/20
    Katy Perry
Katy Perry and Moschino's designer Jeremy Scott arrived hand in hand at the Met Gala, wearing matching outfits and goofing around the red carpet. While it was a cute show, we're not sure it was the right place to do it.However, we have to say we're loving the popstar's new hairdo!
  • 12/20
    Chloe Sevigny
Love her or hate her, the fashion-forward Chloe Sevigny never does wrong in our eyes! We love her J W Anderson which channels the Chinese theme with a modern twist and reflects her style to perfection.
  • 13/20
    Anne Hathaway
The only reason we're putting Anne Hathaway on our best dressed list is the fact she seemed to have taken inspiration from Star Wars for this outfit - yes, we're hardcore geeks at heart. Just wondering, could this Ralph Lauren number be Princess Leia's new costume in the upcoming Episode 7 movie? Is it no gold bikini but we wouldn't mind really!
  • 14/20
    Kendall Jenner
Kim's sister is fast rising on our 'top stars to watch' list - especially when it comes to fashion. Dressed by Calvin Klein - typically as she is the brand's latest face - we're loving Kendall Jenner's elegant and sexy look which shows just enough sideboob to keep it classy. The colour is spot on too.
  • 15/20
    Dakota Johnson
Talking about young and sexy, the 50 Shades of Grey star keeps it simple and fun in a Chanel Couture mini dress. We're normally not big fans of short dresses on such a glamorous event, but Dakota pulls it off to perfection.
  • 16/20
    Diane Kruger
Looking elegant as usual, Diane Kruger made her way on those famous stairs decked in a gorgeous Chanel Couture ensemble. Despite it not being conventional to wear trousers to such an event, the stunning actress still managed to pull off such a risky look with elegance and poise.
  • 17/20
    Cara Delevingne
Her enviable brows aside - Cara's appeal in the fashion and modelling works also comes from her distinct style. Doing glamour her way, she rocks a Stella McCartney jumpsuit and completes her edgy look with paint-on tattoos covering her arms and chest.
  • 18/20
    Sienna Miller
Another star known for her risk-taking when it comes to fashion is British actress Sienna Miller. Who needs a floor-sweeping gown when you can look this good - and comfortable - in a  stunning and simple ensemble like this Thakoon suit? Easily, one of our favourite looks on the night!
  • 19/20
    Solange Knowles
Beyonce's sister caused quite a stir at last year's Met Gala when she reportedly started a fight with her bro-in-law Jay Z. This year, however, her awkward Giles dress is enough to put us off. It just looks so uncomfortable and clumsy... wait, is she trying to play peekaboo with us?
  • 20/20
    Jennifer Lawrence
Yawn... we're starting to get bored here of this J Law/Dior collaboration which saw the star in less than impressive looks on several occasions. Did they run out of gowns at Dior? We have no other explanation for this underwhelming look.

The biggest and most glamorous red carpet of the year is here! And we don't mean that of the Oscars or Cannes - we're talking about pure fashion that is the Met Gala.  The annual benefit - which by the way costs USD25k a ticket -  is held every year to raise funds for New York's  Metropolitan Museum of Art's Costume Institute as well as to celebrate fashion and creativity in its highest form.

It is also an opportunity for us to see fashion take centre stage on a whole different level as the stars get decked out in artful creations, mostly accompanied by their designers.

The theme for this year's benefit was 'China: Through the Looking Glass' and it comes as no surprise considering that everyone around the world is looking East for inspiration these days..

While there might be do's and dont's at other red carpets - at the Met Gala anything goes. It is the only occasion where it is acceptable - as well as expected - to be extravagant and there's no such thing as OTT.

Speaking of OTT - Never one to shy away from dramatic entrances, Rihanna did what she does best and literally swept the red carpet with her Guo Pei furry coat which looked like it weighed a ton. Kudos to her though for following the night's theme wearing a Chinese designer who might as well be one of the best couturiers in the world.

As hard as Rihanna might have tried, we think she was no match for the real fashion girl Sarah Jessica Parker who surprised everyone by arriving in a custom-made H&M (yes H&M) gown complete with an intricate Asian-inspired headgear that only she could pull off.

Another surprise on the night was Amal Clooney who wowed in a custom Maison Margiela Couture gown designed by John Galliano which fit her to perfection. The disgraced designer might have won his way back into the fashion world - and we surely are glad about that!

As for the rest of the lucky attendees - scroll through our gallery to find out who wowed - and  those who failed to impress - us on fashion's biggest night.
