Cannes 2015: The style hits and misses on the red carpet

Tarandip Kaur https://www.mariefranceasia.com/hk/author/tarandip 25 May 2015 mis à jour le 3 May 2019 à 17:54

The prestigious film festival may have officially come to a close but the sartorial highlights will continue. Here are all the good and bad style choices that were on show.

Barbara Palvin
  • 1/16
    Barbara Palvin
What we like: Sheer top that shows off her curves. What we like least: The oddly placed sheer panels on the pants. A completely black one would have worked better.
  • 2/16
    Sonam Kapoor
What we like: The colour. What we like least: The monstrous volume of the dress and the hay-like feathered details. All of that only seems to be consuming her whole.
  • 3/16
    Elena Lenina
What we like: The bottom of the dress, which is simple and without unnecessary frills. What we like least: Where do we begin? The wings, the ice cream cone hair and too much skin up top.
  • 4/16
    Paris Hilton
What we like: The color of the dress that complements her complexionWhat we like least: The misplaced cutouts of the dress - a little way too distracting.
  • 5/16
    Natasha Poly
What we like: Oddly, we love the plunging neckline that still manages to look incredible on her, rather than trashy. What we like least: The gold bling hue is a little too reminiscent of the 80s.
  • 6/16
    Lady Victoria Hervey
What we like: The overall silhouette of the dress. What we like least: Everything else. From the shoes to the belt and the neckline. Not to mention, the slit is a tad bit too high, leaving nothing to the imagination.
  • 7/16
    Salma Hayek
What we like: Salma Hayek's petite demeanour. What we like least: The excessive brocade detail and the long tail that seems a little too overwhelming for her.
  • 8/16
    Michelle Rodriguez
What we like: The shape of the dress, on its own is stunning. What we like least: The butterfly lace and the sheer panels on the sides. Honestly, this looks like she's ready to unleash her wings and flutter away.
  • 9/16
    Lara Stone
What we like: Lare's sublime bodyWhat we like least: The Game of Thrones-inspired hair and the bodice looks a little too small for Lara.
  • 10/16
    Melissa George
What we like: The unconventional robe and shorts combination. What we like least: Too much black going on. Perhaps a little colour would make this look a little less sombre.
  • 11/16
    Marie Gillain
What we love: The shape and length of the dress. What we like least: Those faded printed flowers look a little too granny.
  • 12/16
    Carla Ortiz
What we like: The simple clutch that she's holding. What we like least: The combination of barbie pink and sequin panels. Pick one!
  • 13/16
    Irina Shayk
What we like: The silhouette. What we like least: The unsightly yellow flame-like hue that suggests she should be on the set of Hunger Games. Also, she might just tear the dress with another step.
  • 14/16
    Natalie Portman
What we like: The emerald green shade of the dress. What we like least: The unflattering silhouette, the belt and the plunging neckline that does nothing for her.
  • 15/16
    Erin O'Connor
What we like: The faultless colour of the dress. What we like least: That extra large bow is way too distracting.
  • 16/16
    Jane Seymour
What we love: The fit. What we do not like: The weird amount of tulle that's neither here nor there at the bottom of her dress.

More so than the Oscars, at the Cannes Film Festival, fashion is almost always a splendid affair. An affair that requires stars to bring out the big guns in the styling department and rope in all their designer friends to bag the most exquisite of gowns to flaunt on the red carpet.

For instance, stars like Bollywood beauty, Aishwarya Rai managed to inject a whole dose of elegance whether she was in a white Ralph Russo gown or a soft lilac Elie Saab number. Then there was Li Bingbing, the Chinese actress who floored everyone with her ethereal Zuhair Murad gown - no one could fault her, she essentially made Disney dreams come true.

However, at times even with the team of stylists in tow, somehow celebrities still manage to sneak in a faux pas or two. Yes, we're looking at you Sonam Kapoor in that yellow hay-like monstrosity and Elena Lenina's weird ice cream cone hair. Who does that?

Well, at least we know celebrities make mistakes too.
