What the best part of giving a gift? Seeing your partner’s face when they receive it, of course! The smile on their face when you give them that thing they’ve been wanting all year, or even when reading the cute notes in your card, is priceless. Mail your gifts to one another but wait until the big day to open them in front of each other over Skype. Then you can chat and laugh about your gifts together. With technology these days, romance is never dead.

#2 Create a care package
Nothing shows care more than a care package. Packed with all your beau’s favourite items and titbits, a care package is always a super thoughtful gift. We suggest including his favourite chocolates, the cologne you love on him most, a list of all the things you’re going to do when you meet again, some cute ‘I love you’ gifts and of course, a mushy card. Spice it up a notch and include some of the items that can only be found in your current location. Voila! A care package with a tourist twist.

#3 Organise a Skype dinner or movie date
Want to go on that hot date but distance is in the way? Don’t let that stop you!

Open up your Facetime or Skype and chat with each other whilst cooking the same dish. Enjoy it over a glass of wine and then finish the night by watching the same film. Although you’re video-chatting all night, the extra effort in eating the same meal and watching something will give you more to talk about as well as feel like you’re doing something to mark the day. (Plus, it’s a great way to see who’s the better cook, when left to their own devices).

#4 Spend time with other loved ones
We’re pretty lucky on this side of the pond that this year Valentine’s Day falls on the day before Chinese New Year, which means people will be celebrating the entire weekend. Take the opportunity to spend some time with your family and friends.

Valentine’s Day is all about love, so use it to spend some time with your loved ones present where you are, such as grandparents who also might not be with their significant other. Of course, don’t forget to call your special someone first thing in the morning!

#5 Plan a trip a few days before or after Valentines' Day
Plan ahead! Who says Valentines Day had to be on February 14^th? Spend the day on the phone and start researching a trip. Book something and the day will automatically feel better. Then when you’re reunited you’ll definitely have something extra to look forward to. Plus, couple activities will be way cheaper outside of Valentine’s Day!

All said and done, nothing beats seeing each other in person. Maybe this one is cheating slightly (forgive us, but we had to!) The look on your partners face when you magically end up at their front door is truly priceless. Thanks to Chinese New Year, you probably have the time off, so make the most of it and go give your partner some lovin’?

Long distance relationships (LDR) can really suck, even more so when it’s the holidays. Being physically away from your partner on Valentine’s Day - of all occasions - might just entail a recipe of tears and being in bed all day long (okay, maybe we’re just being a little dramatic here.)

As much as Valentines' Day gets flack for being an overrated day of love, it's still a sweet gesture to celebrate it.
