Dress The Part: 5 Outfits inspired by evergreen Christmas classics

Perin Sidhu https://www.mariefranceasia.com/hk/author/perin 04 Dec 2015 mis à jour le 3 May 2019 à 13:58

If you're stuck wondering what to wear this holiday season, take some cues from these leading ladies of Hollywood.

Love Actually
  • 1/15
    Love Actually
Love Actually still remains as one of our favourite rom-coms that manages to make us feel fuzzy inside with its plot. Throughout the movie, we see various fashion styles but if there's one we would recommed this holiday season it would be jeweled tops or dresses. They are statment pieces themselves. You do not need any extra accessories. Colour block your jeweled tops with basics to bring out the contrast.

    Miracle On 34th Street
The 40s were all about the collars. Peterpan collars have made a comeback this season and can often be seen on dresses. Miracle On 34th Street showacased the cast wearing various kinds of colours. For a dressed down version, opt for a peterpan collared top paired with a skater skirt.

    When Harry met Sally
"I'll have what she's having" - We will have what Sally's having in this Christmas classic. Nora Ephron's classic rom com When Harry Met Sally still strikes a chord whenever we watch it. Take a que from the movie and try a menwear inspired look. Steal Meg Ryan's tomboy-inspired style with a print suit and pair of oxfords.

    White Christmas
if you are looking for the perfect LBD this festive season, take inspiration from the beautiful black gown Rosemary Clooney wore in the old Hollywood classic, The White Christmas. Add a modern spin to the outfit by opting for a shorter version of the original gown. A black halter dress with satin details will do the trick. Finish off with a pair of killer heels and old Hollywood curls.

    It's a Wonderful Life
It's a Wonderful Life is a timeless classic that's known for showcasing subtle fashion. Many outffits were styled with pearls and can be adopted in today's fashion setting with ease. Pearls are a staple and can be worn in a variety of ways in your outfit. Instead of opting for a black dress, opt for a pop of colour and accessories with pearls or statment jewellery.

This year bring back the vibe of Old Hollywood by taking inspiration from outfits in some of the most iconic films.

Take for example the cult classic When Harry met Sally. Apart from the iconic scenes and dialogues, this movie went down in history and is remembered for its fashionable outfits even 25 years down. Have you been wearing high waisted shorts to death this year? In the movie, Sally Albright wore high waisted Bermuda shorts – a far cry from what we would consider fashionable today. But you have to love her for having the fashion foresight to pair them with prim button-down cardigan combos.

Many of these movies showcase the characters playing up one element of their outfit. If their dresses were glamourous, they skipped accessories. Take Rosemary Clooney from the movie The White Christmas for example. Her elegant black gown was the highlight in the scene and she completed the look with styled hair and nothing else.

Speaking of styling, this holiday season take a cue from your favourite characters and adopt their beauty styles as well. Go for old Hollywood waves in place of straight hair. If you are looking for a classic red pout to match your outfit, opt for a semi matte lipstick.

Head over to the gallery up top for our round up of fashion inspiration to adopt from 5 evergreen classic Christmas movies. With many gatherings and parties to attend this festive season, our guide may just solve the most popular question -  'What should I wear?'
