Singapore-based womenswear label Ong Shunmugam presents a sophisticated modern spin on Asian garments at Audi Fashion Festival 2014.

Taking a traditional garment and modernising it is something which we’ve been seeing a lot of designers do recently – especially in Asia. And with our continent’s rich culture and costume background – who can blame them?

However, Singapore-based label Ong Shunmugam is one of the few who got the balance right – and continue to do so and grow as it was evident in her latest F/W2014 collection, which was debuted during the Audi Fashion Festival.

‘Madness and Civilisation’ demonstrated a great deal of sophistication – which designer Priscilla Shunmugam has pushed this time an extra notch to present a complete collection with outstanding tailoring and detail.

Fabric and prints play a big role in Shunmugam’s design and ethos – as she usually works with traditional textiles and patterns which are normally seen in Indian or Chinese garments. However, this time round, the designer has included some plain pastel pieces which focused on the cut and little details like the oriental collar and various sleeve styles and lengths.

The show started off with these modern interpretations of a ‘Cheongsam‘ – more like a deconstruction especially with the cropped top/high waisted wide pants combos – in hues of pale yellow, blue and green, and proceeded to end with a juxtaposition of prints which were superbly mixed to create some stunning  and elegant dresses.

Inspired by both civilisations she comes from – Indian and Chinese – the designer continues to push the envelop further displaying more maturity and complexity in her designs without overlooking the elegance factor which present in every single piece on the runway.

Tailored to perfection – this collection might as well be one of the best we’ve seen at this year’s AFF.
