Waist Training: Do slimming corsets and shapewear really work?

They are a convenient way to gain the figure you’ve always dreamed of, no doubt.

Shapewear, tummy trimmers, waist trainers, body shapers… they come in a variety of names and target a variety of areas. For some, they may be a quick fix to tummy tucking. To others, they provide a long-term solution to losing inches. There are plenty of different ones out there – ones that target thighs, the upper arms, the booty and the stomach. But do they really work?

According to celebrity personal trainer Kali O’Mard, these body shapers aren’t so good at giving you the permanent results you are looking for, and this is because all you are doing is “compressing your stomach and putting the fat elsewhere, not getting rid of it”. O’Mard instead suggests that you “exercise, eat well and eliminate refined and processed foods from your diet. Then you’ll have the abs and waist of your dreams”.

That said, it might be worth noting that shapewear can actually help you achieve a temporary slimming effect when worn underneath clothes like lingerie. If you’re trying on a tight-fitting wrap dress and have a few rolls of flab you want to conceal, a waist-trimming shaper might be just the thing to hide your unwanted bumps and lumps. You don’t have to go on a crazy diet – just fake the weight loss!
