You’ve read Shakespeare, Keats and Wordsworth. It’s high time now to discover the gems we’ve got in our local poetry scene as well.

Growing up, many of us had to read Shakespearean poems as part of the English literature curriculum, but beyond the classroom, most of us had little to no appreciation for the art form in which human language is used for its aesthetic qualities instead of semantic content.

Now that you no longer have to deconstruct verses for the sake of exams, it’s likely that poems apprehend you less and you’ve even come to enjoy the arbitrary-looking line breaks and the flowery prose you once found mind-boggling.

Well, whether you’ve got every poem of Keats sussed out or whether you’re out to discover your newfound appreciation for this art in literature form, we’d like to point you in the direction of 10 local poets that will have you looking at poetry in a whole new different way.

Who knows, you just might be inspired to pen your own thoughts or feelings in poetic form.
