Thought only teenagers can pull off this hot trend? We prove you wrong with a sophisticated take-on the midriff-baring craze…

With the bevy of celebrities donning crop-tops, the trend can be solely associated with a generation of trend-following teens but this is far from the truth. Brands and designers such as Peter Som, Alexander Wang, Prada and Balenciaga embraced the fast-selling crop-top trend in their latest collections. No longer does the crop-top possess a solely younger vibe; instead, its made its way onto high-fashion runways.

When wearing crop tops, it is important to shed the image that it is casual and cannot be worn in a luxurious way. Sleek, sharp silhouettes are a wonderful factor to look for when buying a crop-top. Hues such as grey, white and black are perfect when paired with brighter bottoms or accessories, in order to truly make a statement while still looking sophisticated.

Other factors are length – opt for pieces which show enough midriff without showing too much. Longer, fitted tops do the trick, and can be paired with high-waisted pants and skirts to finish off the look. For tropical climates that are easily accessible to us, cut-off sleeves and sleeveless tops are ideal, for both comfort and overall attitude.

Regardless of the season – yes we’ve even seen them featured in winter collections – crop tops are definitely creeping their way to our chic wardrobes, something we never thought would happen. If you want to follow suit, have a look at our selection below which displays this bold trend at its best.
