Gourmet Charcoal Waffles with Salted Egg Dip
Joining the influx of hipster eateries in the neighbourhood is FatCat, which distinguishes itself from the others with their innovative Gourmet Charcoal waffles (SGD10). Think it’ll taste odd on it’s own? Drizzle the salted egg dip and top it off with a vanilla-flavoured ice cream - this interesting combination might just change your mind. Also, as they only come in limited quantities (plus it’s highly raved on Instagram at the moment), be sure to head down early for a chance to indulge in this.

Bacon Brownie or Bacon Ice Cream
Fancy a plate of bacon brownie (SGD4.50) with bacon ice cream (SGD9) for dessert? Or bacon strips infused with dark chocolate? If we hear you say ‘ewww’ at one point, then this is probably not the place for you. For the folks at Oh My Bacon, nothing is too bizarre as they pride themselves with serving bacon-inspired dishes for all to enjoy. From mains, to desserts and even little things like jam, a dream come true would be an understatement for all bacon lovers out there.

Spam Fries with Truffle Mayo
Move over, cold cut sandwiches. The newest, and probably best incarnation of luncheon meat these days has got to be the Spam Fries (SGD11.90). If you love your luncheon meat deep fried, then you’ve gotta try the Spam Fries at Froth – long, crispy bite-sized goodness, served with a choice of truffle or wasabi mayo dip. So sinfully good.

Pumpkin Hazelnut Fries
If you think Hazelnut only goes well with ice cream, you better think twice. These Pumpkin Hazelnut (SGD12) straw-cut fries are flavoured with bits of hazelnut, paprika and chilli powder, which surprisingly proved to be a winning combination. And if you're feeling slightly adventurous, take your pick from a selection of other fries-tastic flavours like the Curry Mustard (SGD9), Carrot Fennel (SGD9) and the Truffle Taro (SGD7). It’s time to gorge yourself silly!

Truffle Jalapeño Mac & Cheese Waffles
Most of us have tried Truffle Fries and Mac & Cheese, but Truffle Mac & Cheese Waffles (SGD11.50)? Not like anything we’ve ever heard of. Thanks to its fluffy soufflé base, one bite of this delectable waffle will leave you yearning for more. And if you're not a fan of truffle or mac & cheese, fret not, because the Matcha Strawberry Field Waffle drizzled with passionfruit sauce is no exception too.

Blue Velvet Cake
Tucked in the remote area of Clementi is Bucktile St. Cafe, where you can indulge in a slice of this Blue Velvet Cake (SGD6.90), that’s a stark contrast from the usual red velvet ones most cafes offer. Pair it with some of the signature drinks offered in their menu, like the Chai Latte (approx. SGD5), and we’re pretty sure it’ll help chase your Monday blues away.

Squid Ink Waffle with Smoked Salmon or Crispy Bacon
We’ve seen our fair share of Buttermilk Waffles in cafes everywhere, but have you heard of squid ink (SGD18.90) ones? Nestled next to Strangers’ Reunion (and opened by the same people), Waffle Slayer serves up unique and savoury dark grey waffles topped with delicious ice cream. White Truffle Ice Cream
As if there weren’t enough indie-themed cafes in Bukit Ho Swee already, check out one that recently popped up in the vicinity. With peculiar flavours like White Truffle Ice Cream (SGD4.80) and others, including Parma Ham with Melon and White Rabbit Candy, we reckon their highly creative inventions are a refreshing take to the otherwise typical ones offered at almost all other cafes.

Miso Gula Melaka
Your tastebuds might get confused with an unusual mix of sweet and savoury ice cream flavours, like the Miso Gula Melaka (approx. SGD4.50), Pineapple Coconut & Cloves and even the Hoisin sauce. Over at Seriously Ice Cream, expect slushy-like ice cream instead of creamier ones, which is considered healthier. These flavours are rotated daily to keep things fresh, so keep an open mind when you head down to try.

Aburi Broccoli Salad
Who would have thought that mixing broccoli, papadum, white balsamic and red sugar would work? Well, this Aburi Broccoli Salad (SGD10) sure does. Compared to the usual salads we can order anywhere, the owners of Sin Lee Foods took it up a notch with just the right combination of textures and flavours in one bowl. And since it’s meat-free, it doesn't hurt to have more than one bowl right?

Calling all the bold foodies – go on and get your tastebuds acquainted with these unconventional flavours that’s bound to surprise.

With numerous cafes popping up in our little red dot, it is no wonder each has come up with ways to distinguish themselves from the other. Apart from making their decor Instagram-worthy, complete with cool signages, vintage furnitures and whimsical wallpapers, many have also started experimenting with their menus, even going as far as fusing savoury and sweet (think bacon ice cream) to come up with a signature dish in hopes of tantalizing diners.

While it’s refreshing to see the risks these cafes have taken, we can’t help but wonder if they actually work. Nonetheless, we’ve rounded up 10 quirky bites from cafes around the city for you to get started.
