Langkawi, AKA The Jewel of Kedah
The etymology of Langkawi's name is widely debated, thought to have derived from an eagle (based on which Eagle Square was formed), an old kingdom, or the fact that it is made up of many beautiful islands. Whatever the origin, in 2008, Langkawi was officially named The Jewel of Kedah (Malay: Langkawi Permata Kedah) by Kedah's Sultan as part of his golden jubilee. We think this new name definitely suits the place.

It is an archipelago
Yes, Langkawi is actually an archipelago made out of 104 islands, situated in the Andaman Sea. The confusion lies in the fact that the biggest island in the group has also been named after the archipelago, to be called Langkawi Island. However, a trip to this location usually warrants visits to other islands as well, so we'd be more mindful when talking about Langkawi if we were you.

It is a duty-free port
And therefore a shopper's paradise. There are just too many places you can do your duty-free shopping at this destination, we've lost count. If you love your alcohol, here is where you can splurge and treat yourself, especially since it can be hard to find a duty-free shop in the main cities of Malaysia. Ladies, you'll have plenty of reason to go crazy.

It is Thailand’s neighbour
Langkawi is situated adjacent to the border between Malaysia and Thailand, which makes it extremely easy to simply hop on to a ferry bound for Koh Lipe. If you find yourself yearning to explore even more than that offered by the Malaysian archipelago, you have the option of travelling to another country in just a matter of hours! No fuss at all.

There is something for everybody
Don't think that Langkawi is just your typical island retreat. The idea of Langkawi being the perfect beach getaway stems from the abundance of surrounding islands to explore and the lush scenery that will greet you upon arrival. However, Langkawi Island really acts like a city on its own, with shopping avenues, museums and stunning golf courses that are sure to entertain even the trendiest urbanite in you.

There is no public transportation
To get around this island, you'll have to hail a cab, or rent your own vehicle for greater convenience. Cycling is also a viable option, since the island isn't very big. You can also enjoy the beautiful scenery and the island breeze at the same time. Don't forget to stop for pictures!

Feel free to swim in the Telaga Tujuh Waterfall
Telaga Tujuh directly translates to Seven Wells, because of the seven natural pools that make up this large waterfall. It is one of the main attractions of this island due to its beauty, and also the fun that sliding down its rock surface poses. The waters are clean and refreshing, so bring along your bathing suit when visiting this area to cool off from the heat of the island.

Pantai Cenang is your beach haven
Pantai Cenang is the most popular beach that's conveniently located on Langkawi Island, and where most of the luxury accommodation and tourist activities are found. It is an extremely vibrant strip that you should definitely experience for yourself, especially if you're looking to make some new friends or take part in some water activities.

It is ideal for scuba diving
Pulau Payar Marine Park boasts of shallow waters and a beautiful coral garden that makes it perfectly safe and an easy dive for scuba enthusiasts who can't get enough of marine life. If you're lucky, you'll get a glimpse of reef sharks which thankfully pose no threat to us humans.

No island is complete without a picturesque view of the entire place from atop a hill, and this is made possible by the famous Langkawi cable car ride that takes visitors up to Mount Mat Cincang, Langkawi's second highest peak.
