How to wear a midi skirt?

With some help from our streetstyle stars, we show you how you can tackle the tricky trend.

Coming in all shapes and sizes is the midi skirt - a midway counterpart of the knee-length and maxi varieties. It's a go-to among busy fashionistas for its immense comfort and ease of movement, while always attracting the lenses of streetstyle photographers.

However, the silhouette can sometimes be difficult to pull off, so we're here to shed some light on how you can better wear the trend.

KNOW YOUR LENGTH

Where the hem stops for this skirt is vital in flattering your body type. The key here is to bring attention to the slimmest parts of your legs - which are usually the areas beyond the calves but above the ankles. Slimmer calves can benefit from any midi skirt length, while more athletic legs should go for longer hems that graze just above the ankle.

HIGHLIGHT YOUR WAIST

Whether you're into flared, circle style or a slim pencil silhouette, a rule of thumb is to always let the skirt begin at your waist. It gives you a more proportionate shape, regardless of the top you pair it with - whether it's fitted, flowy or oversized.

PUT ON A JACKET

Cropped jackets that end right at where your skirt begins are best for playing up a boxy look. That said, longer coats or cardigans can have an elongating effect on the body. Be sure not to layer too much if you're already wearing a skirt with a lot of volume, otherwise you could end up looking frumpy.

HEAVY ON THE BOTTOM, SIMPLE ON TOP

A variety of printed midi skirts are available in the market and for those of you who are easily drawn to these bright, creative looks, you might want to put your hands up before making an impulsive purchase. Commit to wear simpler, solid-coloured tops if you intend on investing in bottoms with a loud print, or risk looking too over-the-top and dated. Matching co-ordinates are an exception if the print is of a smaller scale, and in a more understated colour.

SHOES

Shoes can make or break an outfit. As seen on our streetstyle stars, a pair of heels can compliment your midi skirt look well and is almost fool-proof. Boots and sneakers - although lending a tough edge to the feminine silhouette - are a little trickier to pair with the look, so be sure to take a second glance in the mirror to see if your height is still in check. A long skirt length may cut off the length of your legs, but showing off the right amount of those gams will still keep you looking tall.
